So Trump didn't return the "peace prize" recommendation swap by talking about the Japanese abductees?

Washington to Abe: support us or we will but sanctions against Japan, do as you're sold.

Abe backs Trump after Kim summit ends with no deal

He backs up Trump on everything.

15 ( +20 / -5 )

Wise words, PM Abe backs USA and Trump 100%. Without concrete promises (ex disarm missiles, release the kidnapees) the Summit cannot succeed. I hope PM Abe realizes his dream to meet Chairman Kim and discuss the issues. A Summit could be held in Japan, perhaps Hokkaido. Chairman Kim would be treated like a King and make a great relationship with PM Abe. Please, make this happen.

Among the various responses Team-Abe had prepared. Filed away for next time: Abe backs Trump after he makes a deal with Kim, Abe backs Trump after the president commits to marrying Kim's sister in exchange for the abductees, the list goes on and on.

And as ever, I'm always impressed with Japanese patriots promising to treat enemy dictators like kings when they visit. It just seems so genuine and heartfelt.

Why is this still in leadership? Gahhhh I'm exhausted from just how useless the japanese opposition is.

Wagging his tail to the master.

America needs to deal with the sheer bloody-mindedness and intransigence of not only North Korea, but its principal enabler China, swiftly and sternly. Neither, to be fair, has America’s proactive spruiking of the benefits of peace done much to sway Japanese and South Koreans much in the direction of accepting that America’s interests are no longer automatically predicated on giving oxygen to something that should’ve ended when the Cold War ended. If the Asians refuse to bite the bullet themselves, America should tell each of them that continued military support will henceforth be contingent on real measurable progress in putting an end to this nearly 70 year old state of war. Putting them all on notice is the only way that this is ever going to be resolved.

"I'm determined to meet Chairman Kim Jong Un next time," he said.

Far too many people here think you are a great leader, but it has become rather obvious that just isnt true!

You are perhaps the world's greatest follower!

5 ( +10 / -5 )

You are perhaps the world's greatest follower!

Yeah, I imagine Shinzo waking up every morning and promptly "liking" each of Trump's tweets from the day before. Gotta hand it to him though--it must take tremendous humility to act like a toy poodle, nipping at Trump & Kim's ankles, begging for treats.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Chairman Kim would be treated like a King and make a great relationship with PM Abe.

You're slipping into self-parody here dude. You do know that Shinzo's grandfather tried to kill Kim's grandfather don't you?

Reminds me of the Blair-Bush relationship, one of poodle to master.

Anyway, yet another failure by Trump. Spending 60% of this time watching

Fake Fox News leaves little to time to actually get things done, but when he

tries he fails. How can you not get a deal out of NK? It is like failing in the Casino

business, how is that possible?

Abe backs Trump after Kim summit ends with no deal

Did anybody expect any different kind of statement from Trump’s lapdog?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Wagging his tail to the master.

II find this cliche to be rather amusing, though disrespectful to the Prime Ministerial Office. Particularly that Japan/USA interests' are aligned in terms of full, verifiable, and permanent denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

There is no reason why Abe should not back Trump when Trump takes a hardline in negotiation.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Many people here don't appreciate that denuclearisation is a proxy for decoupling from China. China gave NK nuclear technology and assistance in the first instance, why? To further China's interests, same as the case with Pakistan.

For NK to give up nukes and no longer relying on China for its economic survival is a significant shift. Remember 70% of NK's trade is with China. Trump and Abe are right and prudent in their negotiation strategy with NK.

Dont know if Russia had anything to do with the election, but its certainly working out well for China, and yet Japan continues to support America, very strange.

@Alfie NoakesToday  08:15 am JST thanks for that link some excellent reporting

Abe backs Trump

More like

Abe kisses Trump's backside

2 ( +7 / -5 )

It's maybe better Trump walked out, cause Kim is a good manipulator and may have gotten to used to the situation to take advantage.

Kim also knows his country has a lot of untapped minerals and is playing hard ball.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Chairman Kim would be treated like a King

Because the Kim dynasty doesn't have enough (forced) fawning in the DPRK as it is.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Abe will back Trump strongly too if the talk result a compromise.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Japan could avoid the worst case scenario. that's for sure

Gahhhh I'm exhausted from just how useless the japanese opposition is.

That's right. I propose Abe haters in this forum to recommend someone else or some other party

anytime back to scoring Abe for socring.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

WOW! I did not see this coming at all!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

.

Abe backs trump !

So what else could he do?

Honestly - what none- story !!!

.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

America's yapping little poddle.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

will do anything to make himself look internationally important instead of internationally impotent

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Japan can do more than relying on US. Start much more severe own sanctions. Break Chongryon into pieces sweep them all away. Break LDP itself apart if the party got really polluted by yes-men to ChongRyon, then meet the little piggy faced. They claim the abductees all dead. You got nothing to lose.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Poor abe the only one left to support trump.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I dont know why,..but I get the vibe he doesn't really support trump. he just wants to get what he wants. I dont think japan wants the U.S. to have good relations with N. Korea. I personally think the Koreans have better potential in asia than the japanese. the japanese persecuted the koreans horribly back in the day.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"I'm determined to meet Chairman Kim Jong Un next time," he said.

Lol, what next time?! Pick up the phone & arrange a meeting ffs. This is actually quite sad, Abe's got absolutely zero confidence on the international stage. Low self-esteem can be cured; he needs help.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Walking away from a bad deal is what a good negotiator does. And Trump is one.

Also, this puts China on notice that Trump will not be pushed around on a trade deal.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I am surprised to see some Japanese take the threat of North Korea as if it did not exist.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Poor abe the only one left to support trump

Nothing to be ashamed of. As PM Abe has stated, Trump is the best Leader in the world. If other nations dont agree, it is very regrettable.

Walking away from a bad deal is what a good negotiator does. And Trump is one. Also, this puts China on notice that Trump will not be pushed around on a trade deal.

@JenniSceibel : brilliantly said. Theres no problem walking from a bad deal. Trump has known “The Art of The Deal” for 50 years, and is applying it here. Communist PRC will be troubled they arent getting there way.
