It seems to me that the only way to break this cycle is for the opposition to persuade the coalition partner to break away from LDP. Is that possible ?

Pointless gestures yes I agree, but the LDP are old and culturally have to be given respect. So the opposition culturally cannot nail them. That would be rude! So are deferring to Shogani is culturally the best option. It’s not like any of them worry about the peasants.

I really, really loathe the LDP and everything about their dirty oligarchic money politics, but no wonder they keep winning when the opposition parties keep wasting their time with pointless gestures like this.

I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if the Japanese for “snap election” and “motion of no confidence” both translate as “we win anyway”.

Support for the LDP is still multiples of any opposition party, the result of this election will be a LDP landslide, with opposition more likely to lose seats instead.

Japanese voters may be unhappy with LDP, but they will never vote for people without proper heritage. If they do not like the current politician they will simply not vote but would never consider voting for someone else. Loyalty to the regional political families is pretty much absolute. Unless there are defections from LDP politicians, LDP can never lose. Political family members also can never lose, they can have zero support nationally but will still have the loyalty from their local region to win easily.

He doesn’t want three more months of questioning. He is busy having a serious of meetings about calling a “snap” election. And the LDP need time to organise the internal factions to decide who gets what. And who is next in line to be PM, family trees need to be verified faction loyalty proven. It’s not as straight forward as asking the people.
