That guy (Trump) has no business cutting deals (as a leader) with China. Trump himself is bad news and we've seen plenty of evidence of that.
isabelle
Trump didn't even write that book. A ghostwriter did.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/07/25/donald-trumps-ghostwriter-tells-all
Trump has no talent whatsoever, unless you count whipping up nationalistic sentiment, criminality, and abusing people as "talents."
isabelle
Excellent advice. But will Trump listen? No.
He'd just fall for the CCP lies as soon as Xi strokes his ego, like he did with the "Phase 1" trade deal that China never honored, and never had any intention of honoring.
Maybe he'd get a "beautiful letter" from the Emperor, like he did from his good buddy Kim. That'd be enough for him to cave instantly.
zurcronium
This is hilarious. Aso goes to USA to visit Trump and he can't get an appointment with him. Well, Trump is out on bail from four indictment's and is now a convicted sex offender so he is pretty busy with all the court visits. If Aso could become a juror somehow his chances of meeting Trump would go way up.
Xi is ten times smarter than Trump and would outfox him easily, as he did when Trump was President. That is why China (and Russia) helped Trump win in the 2016 election. They wanted a fool in the WH.
isabelle
I would normally agree with you, and I generally avoid commenting on Trump articles, but this one is about Japan so is actually very relevant to "Japan Today."
If Trump is elected (and I sincerely hope he isn't), Japan needs to be fully prepared for the four years of chaos that will ensue.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Removing a forensics institute from sanctions is hardly an earth shattering cave. I realize it would make your world view fully consistent to have Trump-Xi-Putin working together to undermine democracy but we aren't there yet.
TaiwanIsNotChina
"I asked him and he said it's not Russia"
Onlooker
Trump must be still interested in winning the Nobel Peace Prize. So, to achieve this objective, he would try to fool the whole world on highly visible international issues. This includes, of course, a deal with China at the cost of Taiwan, with Russia at the cost of Ukraine, or once again the Middle East deal excluding Palestinian people. Also, let's not forget that Kim Jong Un became Trump's close friend after two failed meetings. Japanese govt. should of course be concerned about Trump's showboating action.
Peter14
Trump is all about chaos. Domestic and international. He thrives on it mistakenly believing only he can solve problems. He is also Autocrat at heart, looking admiringly at people like Putin, Xi and Kim for what they have achieved in their own nations. Some citizens looking at them like they were gods. Many Republicans are already doing that in the US but he wants everyone doing it. He would sell out his own mother, his country and anything else if he thought it would make him look good.
Trump would give Putin Ukraine, he would give Xi Taiwan and even give South Korea to Kim as long as his hero's stroke his ego. Anyone thinking Trump has anything in mind other than his own gratification and image is fooling themselves.
Moonraker
He will screw anyone over for himself. With no banks prepared to back him any more he gets his money from Russia and of course, he will want to protect his Chinese suppliers of the cheap tat he flogs off to the cult and other assorted rubes.
BurakuminDes
Not too sure about that. I do however remember Abe heading to Washington DC for endless summits, golf games, banquets, and "delicious chocolate cake" with his BFF Trump.
TaiwanIsNotChina
I fully expect Trump to surrender to China like he did in Ukraine.
thelonius
If it's any consolation, the world will only have to deal with him for 4 years. That's enough for Trump to pardon himself, funnel more business into his hotels, cut deals worldwide to prop up his businesses, and get out.
I don't think he really cares about anything else.
BackpackingNepal
People are really interested anything that comes with the word "Trump". Can't you all just ignore him and get into better topics that can benefit your place, your country, your world?
Gabriel Sheffield
Anyone who is declaring a trump victory reveals their ignorance of American politics generally and the current campaign specifically. Trump remains deeply unpopular among most voters. His party has had its lowest fundraising since 2013. His popularity with a vocal minority does not equal a general election victory. President Biden's policies are working: we avoided a recession, we have the lowest unemployment rate in 40 years, inflation is cooling, and there is a bipartisan immigration bill that everyone supports except trump. New polls show Biden beating trump. In American politics, November is a very long way off and trump's numbers are not improving. Let everyone be clear: not even conservative political analysts are predicting a trump victory.
ClippetyClop
'They' did a remarkable job of making him commit fraud, attempt to steal an election, steal a mountain of state secrets and force him to wave them about in front of people.
He did a better job convincing you that he's a victim, although I can imagine it was quite easy.

Early days to be waking up in a cold sweat, or succumbing to male menopausal induced hot flashes/flushes, twitching, jerking chewing ones fingers up to the elbow running towards Narita airport on the next plane to Trump Town.
Stuttering manically, unhinged in wild deranged nightmarish day time ephialtes, foaming at the mouth , in coherent gibberish, Donald Trump is leaving the building, ordering the closure of all US pacific forwards bases. Leave a close and trusted ally with next generation pea shooters, and muskets.
Screaming he's done a deal with the Beijing despot Fu Manchu
To then sending the most trusted. even handed, level headed, the very definition of diplomacy etiquette, the suited and booted model of J women's empowerment Taro Aso to lead Trump towards the straight and narrow.
Please called the nurse. time for your medicine and a lie down.
A long long way to go before Donald Trump is entrusted with the keys to the Whitehouse again, the US electorate is bound to have a say in the matter, if the court don't lock him up and throw away the key.
Day terrors are the most frightening need monitoring counselling.
TaiwanIsNotChina
He could try to throw the 2028 election for Ivanka or Don Jr.
dagon
Silver spoon USA meets silver spoon Nippon. Hopefully Aso's pride was slightly bent out of shape. One of the few times Trump put an authoritarian in his place.
Trump does envy the dictatorial powers of leaders like Xi, to an unhealthy extent.

The Japanese need not worry that 45 will become 47: where Trump is going he won't be expecting any visits from Xi.
Asiaman7
@BurakuminDes
You forgot to mention attendance to a sumo final. Japan knew exactly what to feed the simple-minded child to get what Japan wanted.
And simpletons like you never realized your pockets were being picked.

trump is a danger to The World, he knows that and plays to it.
nandakandamanda
I remember it was reported about Trump on the golf course asking Abe for specific favors for his Los Vegas casino buddies. Can he really do that? I wondered.
nandakandamanda
Edit: Las Vegas
nandakandamanda
Trump is way worse than Nixon, but if there is even a possibility that he gets a majority vote this time around, then it makes sense for Japan to be prepared.

Hard to imagine Putin's Puppet doing anything that is not in Russia's best interest. Betray America? Betray Japan? No Problem!!

Still Putin's War

TaiwanIsNotChina
At least ChatGPT is telling the right kind of stories. Still Putin's war, though.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Yes he does. Still Putin's War and still Trump's Surrender.
starpunk
Everything he does is bad news and illegal. His daughter-wife had to discontinue her fashion line of clothes made in Chinese factories because Americans don't want her name on the butt of their jeans. Wah.
And he's no leader of anything. He's been a puppet of Putin all along and that has been obvious from the start.
Chico3
Abe was not the only one. North Korea, China, and Russia also had him in their pockets, too. They all played him and controlled him like a marionette, and a heavy one at that.
nandakandamanda
Haha, this article gave me a few good laughs, especially the last few lines. So, Japan (the LDP) may choose their next Prime Minister on his golfing skills. 'Not too good'.
Hey, anyone could be a candidate!
blue in green
That’s easy- everyone.
But who will succeed?
LOL.

Japan needs another Shinzo Abe if Trump comes to power again.
Golf & hamburger diplomacy. Abe knew the way to Trump’s heart.

Don't lose too much sleep, Japan.

Trump is now talking about putting 10% tariffs on all imports, and even up to 60% tariffs on Chinese imports,
watch inflation go through the roof, the American consumers pays for the tariffs, not China or other importers.
TaiwanIsNotChina
You're right, he got played in every interaction with Putin instead. You just ignore that.
Trump did the sword dance with his buddy MBS.
Your slavish devotion to Russia but but but not China rings hollow.

just how badly can someone be performing in office to still lose ground to someone who's the subject of an ongoing massive demolition campaign
HopeSpringsEternal
China and Trump Both want Peace in order to have Prosperity, really that simple. China believes Trump can re-start US private sector growth & slow US Govt. Debt Binge and intrusive over-reach into US private sector.
US Govt. unsustainable spending driving up global interest rates & inflation, unwelcome in China & Globally as it damages real (not deficit spending) global GDP growth.
State of World Today just the Opposite and getting Worse daily, with global tension, military escalation, weapons proliferation and risk of terrorism ALL RISING.
China also likes Trump's non-interference approach and his desire to pull back from NATO's dangerous eastward expansion and Taiwan militarization in particular.
Trump & China Share above Global Interests, hence mutual support in order to return to global sanity.
ian
Hahahaha why would I think that he's a victim hahahaha

People in China and Japan, anxious to have Trump in office, seems he's the ONE who can put an end to the failed US NATO Ukraine Proxy War.
Trump is not interested in facilitating the US military industrial complexes vision, including NATO, of a destabilized world, for THEIR Job Security & Relevance.
Trump's interested in de-risking & private sector growth.
Putin & Zelensky will work it out with Trump's leadership, and world can finally get back to peace and prosperity without this crazy military global escalation risk & inflation causing starvation & economic damage etc.
HopeSpringsEternal
Betting markets today have Trump at b/w 2;1 and 3:1 favorite over Biden in Nov. Or you can listen to fools above express their unsubstantiated biased views.

Otherwise you could have realized that 400,000 jobs were reported and withdrawn after hoodwinking the society. Everything which Joe's regimes report is a big lie based on fiction. And by the way who cares about the polls except those who manipulate it for political ads?
Mark
"" "Clearly Trump is one factor" in the LDP's choice of leader, said Watanabe, adding that the party will ideally look for a candidate who can speak English, build rapport with Trump and play golf.
"A good golfer is bad. Just needs to be a nice golfer so as not to beat Trump," he said.""
YUP, Japan should have nothing to worry about as long as the next PM is a NICE golfer and speaks little English which is not so hard to find, plus if Japan elects a Lady PM things could even be much better.
HopeSpringsEternal
Reason Trump's likely eager to cut a deal with Xi? He wants a friend in China, heading into Nov. election. China can help the move US election needle.
Global chaos stemming from US NATO expansion into Ukraine, threatening Russia, spreading to Mid-East, led to global arm's race & weapons proliferation, terrorism risk, inflation, high energy & food prices, starvation, high interest rates, supply chain & other economic damage etc.
Trump & Xi firmly agree unelected special interests firmly in control of Biden Admin Ukraine policy via US Military Industrial Complex, have put World at Grave Risk of WWIII = their shared interest, getting Biden out of 1600
HopeSpringsEternal

There are a number of global inescapable realities that could heavily influence the 2024 US Election.
Ukraine, Putin Kremlin, the Middle East, in the midst of a devastating war, Israel/Hamas intransigence, Iran's mad mullahs. The ever growing after effects of a pandemic, millions of lives lost, the global economic consequences are only beginning to be felt in citizens cost of living angst/shopping basket, life style choices, fundamental basic human rights.
These months to the US 2024 election could focus minds harshly on what the future presents
The candidates/running mates best suited to lead USA to confront global challenges not experienced since the second world war.

That trump can still mount a competitive campaign despite all that has happened and done to him is truly amazing
deanzaZZR
So many nervous words that amount to squat. Ditch the new-con agenda. Engage with an emerging China as equals and secure peace and prosperity in the region.
smithinjapan
Or what? Trump in particular would never honor any agreement with Japan if it meant more money from China to undermine them. What's Japan going to do about it? NOTHING.
rocketpig
In every multi racial society in history, whenever no one race has majority, then every race in that society will prefer an autocracy run by their race over a multi-racial democracy. America is under-going this transition now and the process is very racial with the smallest group being always picked upon, in this case the Asians. It doesnt matter Japanese or Chinese, the color of the skin will be picked upon for fear mongering politics.
EvilBuddha
Trump-Xi-Putin working together to undermine democracy but we aren't there yet.
Yeah Trump did not get played by Xi in San Francisco, and it’s the Biden administration as much as any previous which has supported dictatorships like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Your fake soundbites about 'democracy' ring hollow.
Cephus
"That trump can still mount a competitive campaign despite all that has happened and done to him is truly amazing"
Truth never die it may be hidden but it never fizzles off. It keeps on burning and growing strong
Chabbawanga
Pathetic. Japan should be focusing on making their own deals with China rather than begging to their US masters.
HopeSpringsEternal
Pragmatist mindset behind Trump's 'what's good for real estate holdings" philosophy. He's not interested in US military industrial complex forever wars or US hegemony. If real estate doing well, society is investing in the future.
Trump's core philosophy's wealth creation for society, not chaos, and that means investment across board, whether education, families, small business, less regulation, etc. He views life thru an investment prism.
Enabling private sector that pays for public sector!
HopeSpringsEternal
People have some nostalgia for Trump, don't like legal partisan warfare, alarmed at state of world, concerned about Biden's health and mostly massively disappointed in Biden's failure to govern from middle as promised.
HopeSpringsEternal
Reason Japan's concerned is Trump's obvious growing advantages regarding Nov. election. Why? People miss Trump, have nostalgia for his leadership that made world feel orderly, including especially cost of everyday items.
Corollary point to above, voters alarm at chaotic state world today, partisan legal warfare being directed at Trump and failed Biden promise of responsible bipartisan leadership to restore America soul.
HopeSpringsEternal
The powers that be in Japan know Trump's inevitable given Pres. Biden's compromised, extensive banking records with tens of $millions in foreign payments, obvious diminished mental capacity, failed record, etc.
The powers that be in Japan are trying to get out front and manage the inevitability of Trump next Jan. It makes sense, especially given China's likely willingness to move prior to Jan 2025, meaning Taiwan's in their crosshairs.
Cephus
“Japan has always had Trump in its back pocket. Abe played him like a fiddle!” If Trump had true friends PM Abe was one of them.

Very troubling. Unfortunately Biden neglected dealing with the US Southern border his entire presidency and now he will not be reelected.

Japan Thinks Donald Trump Will Again Become President Of The U.S.A.?

HopeSpringsEternal
Trump does not believe in global chaos, special interest globalists pursuing their destabilization of Russia Ukraine Proxy War project putting entire world at grave risk.
Trump's much more pragmatic and less ideological one might say, getting economic fundamentals in place while reducing risk in general is his north star.
JJE
He can see the bigger picture unlike the incumbent/s with their us-versus-them mindset. He knows the Art of the Deal and can help out people, here and there.
Bring back the Pax Trumpana and no silly wars, in Asia or beyond.

Soon to be President Trump realises that China has a bigger and better future than Japan.
By the time is elected Japan will most likely be further down the ladder of importance than it is now…
