It hardly benefits anyone no matter what he does.

If Abe was useless as people here claim to be, it would be of no benefit for him to travel either, at least staying at home save a few bucks of the taxpayers... logic

It probably is the right call, but the idea of him actually being able to do anything helpful or take charge is just funny. That being said Abe has done exactly what I would expect and it probably wasn't a particularly difficult decision, yet some are trying to spin it like amazing statesmanship

I am not a huge Abe fan but if he would have left I think some of the same people complaining about him would complain about him leaving.
I think if he came up with a cure for Alzheimers people would find something to complain about.
Probably the right call.

The people/polls are like you too, blinded by looks and care nothing about substance!
That is why Japan is going deeper and deeper into debt and loosing it's relevance and an international country, everyone but the people see Japan as no longer being important, and Abe is doing his best to prop up a house of cards!

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Abe could have cancelled a golf game with Trump for this and most of you would still find a way to complain about it.

Japan of many "natural" disasters like those rainfall flood and Chiba earthquake are things grave to travel abroad. However does this government doing something to Abe visits the flood-hit region? Well, it seems that his reputation at least will grow up a bit, the majority of farmers voted LDP for all those half century.

It's a simple gesture to show the people that he prioritizes domestic issues. This is exactly the same action nearly every leader of a democratic nation would take. Of course JT commenters politicize it... is Abe really the devil here...

It'd be nice if Abe and his pom pom girls would let the families bury their dead before we had to read about how their deaths are boosting his poll numbers you ghoul.

How did Yamaguchi do in the flooding? Lots of stuff on Hiroshima, Okayama, Shikoku, and the Kansai. What about emergency preparation? With this many people did and the extent of damage, it would be good for an evaluation and some proposals for better prepsration.

Is he actually intending to do something about it, or is it just a PR gesture?

Leadership is a matter of having people look at you and gain confidence, seeing how you react. If you’re in control, they’re in control.
This is why Shinzo Abe is staying in Japan. Leaders of Men go where they are needed. Right now, PM Abe is needed in Japan.
By the way, PM is surging in the polls He is up 10 points and decisions like these is the reason why.

If this happened even as recently as 6 months ago, Abe would not have cared one bit, and went anyway. It's due to his lowered poll standings and the LDP election coming up that he is more concerned with the people of Japan than showing off his face to the world.
Bet if the meeting was scheduled with Trump he would have found an excuse to go.

I dunno, he accomplishes as much staying as leaving

An excellent decision. He decided to stay with Japanese people in the nation's hour of need. By staying in Japan, he saying I with you, my people. I with you my people. We are in this together.

He would be criticised even more if he didn’t cancel.
gogogo
What does he plan to achieve? Hi guys I'm still here?
Wakarimasen
Give him a shovel and hard hat and he might just be of some use.

after the fact and the tragic events, maybe better preparation and set protocols that don't rely on Mr Abe's personal management to deal with situations would be better? He can't do anything other than try and boost his popularity as a "caring" leader. Hopefully he won't get in the way.
