talks that come as tensions in Asia have risen over Taiwan and North Korea.
If Churchill in fact said this, it still makes sense: "Jaw jaw not war war".
Good to see at least some world leaders willing to engage in dialogue. It would be nice if China could get its reputed partner and neighbor with the big gas station to be honest when it jaw jaws and to stop war warring, and for China to also encourage its neighbor North Korea to resume the quiet life of a hermit state, let Kim know that hermit's give away their positions when they fire missiles over other sovereign states.

Too much hype for the meeting, the politics are fixed and nothing Kishida could say would change the relationship. Even if Xi is a one man government Kishida is the opposite.

Excellent, both need to meet to improve relations between the two countries..
Together, both countries can do great things..
Dear US keep your hands off this meeting..

Jaw, jaw, not war, war. Hear, hear!

It will be awkward.

Less Jaw Jaw.
It's mostly about Taiwan and the microchips they make. China can't have them. Period. That's all that we need to say.

It is always important to keep the communication lines open.

SMART move. Japan and China have so much to gain talking, and a lot to lose arguing.
Fighto!
Xi's words are worthless and Japan won't pay attention until China's aggressive and warlike behaviour in the region ceases.
Taiwan will NEVER be China's, and there will be no compromise no matter how many pretty words are spoken in this cursory sideline meeting.

Would love to be a fly in the wall in that conversation. I wonder if Xi will offer him an olive branch or whether he will just give some veiled threat with a handshake and a smile.

Interesting, Xi's meeting Yoon before Kishida. The pecking order in Asia has indeed changed.

Like Stephen Hawkins said. All we need to do is keep talking.

It is better to JAW JAW but some leaders want to believe they can do what ever they want, while everyone else wants to jaw jaw. It relies on both wanting to jaw jaw, but you do have to have the will and guts to stand up, to the bully that want to punch you on the jaw. I think we can see China Jabbing. Keep the status quo…. Eg keep the whole of the China sea, let’s keep building military islands, not to mention their Senkaku island claims, oppress the Uighurs, and Hong Kong free speech.
They’ll hide your strength or claws until the time is right for them.

Only a couple of days left for Kishida to play war games and insult China before the meeting. And then he will blame Xi for not being cooperative, when he rejects Kishida's threats. So TYPICALLY JAPANESE!!!

How can Xi Jinping not burst out laughing when he meets Kishida?
32% popularity, puppet, totally failing economy, scandal after scandal, corruption, disappearing middle class, totally out of control NPP, dismal women’s rights…
he might even mistaken Kishida for a translator or an aide. Bellboy.

It's good that Kishida and Xi will talk. Maybe Kishida can get Xi to promise that China won't invade Taiwan.
But back when Xi promised US Preident Obama that China will not militarize the artificial islands in the South China Sea, it took just 6 months for China to militarize them. Russia claimed they were not going to invade Ukraine for weeks, then invaded. So, yes, talking is always a good thing but with certain countries whatever they promise may not mean much.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday but refuses to even personally say a quick hello to Taiwan-ROC President English Tsai!
That says a lot about the principles of the New Japan!

"Move forward" is just tatemae-speak for "don't mind us while we ignore and deny the past."

Xi has already met with Biden and they’ve already rehashed the same one China policy, adhering to international order and so on. There’s no point for for Xi to meet with Kishida.
