What a wasted year! These two countries SHOULD be friends, the people like each other's cultures, food, etc etc etc. It's the damn politicians that screw things up!

Will the children finally realize that the present and future threats are a bigger issue than the past threats?

-5 ( +10 / -15 )

@KariHaruka

Currently, peace is maintained at the moment because Korea is militarily stronger than Japan is and Japan has all but ruled out taking military actions against Korea, because as recently as in 2006, the Koizumi administration was entertaining taking a military action and two countries almost went to war during the 2006 Liancourt Rocks crisis.

Hence Korean children must constantly be reminded of the past in order to ask them to make the sacrifice they are making to ensure that Korean military supremacy over Japan is maintained;

It was inevitable, Japan depends on SK in more ways than the government is willing to admit

-26 ( +9 / -35 )

Reality check...

S. Korea has over 600 items they depend on Japan for. Over 170 are crucial for S. Korean manufacturing.

You do know Japan only used 3 items on the list and S. Korea had tears in their eyes at the WTO and in front of America about Japan.

Koreans are good at boycotting but did you ask what would happen to S. Korea if Japanese people boycott like Koreans? Even worse for you buddy.

Whatever you think half of Korea can do to harm Japan we can do 3x worse.

Keep promises made, agreements signed, that's the foundation of this relationship

No matter what this lame PM says, most Japanese are now sick and tired of perpetual lies and backstabbing from Korea. The sad fact is that Korea will always be one of Japan’s closest neighbors unless there’s a gigantic geological change.

This is really funny to read. This is Korean Pride at its finest. Abe was just returning the good statement Moon said about Japan. No need to wave your rubbish pride.

@AlexBecu

Reality check...

The reality is that the ROK is currently sitting on 5,000 missiles, originally intended to suppress entire North Korean air defense and national infrastructure within 3 days, which can easily be turned around and be aimed on Japan instead.

Hence there is 0% chance of Japan coming out victorious in a war against the ROK, unless Japan too stockpiles 5,000 missiles to return fire and inflict similar damages on Korea that Korea will be inflicting on Japan during wartime.

Forget North Korea: South Korea Is Truly a Military Powerhouse

This has led to the unusual situation in which the 560,000-strong ROK Army, which is only responsible for the defense of South Korea, is larger than the 475,000-strong U.S. Army, which has a global presence

Why did I know Samit Basu would suddenly be making an appearance when it involves a topic about South Korea and Japan relationships?

Anyhow, see what happens when you act like rational, intelligent adults? Once Moon finally saw the light and acted with maturity, then Abe responded in kind.

Moon wasted all that time stubbornly and arrogantly huffing and puffing when he could have ended the nonsense by acting like a grownup.

Let's pray that this continues.

21 ( +30 / -9 )

You can't trust Moon, one day he's talking about friendship and the need to work together, the next day he's bringing up past issues and saying Japan is evil and needs to pay up.

17 ( +24 / -7 )

The reality is that the ROK is currently sitting on 5,000 missiles,

that is right. 5000 missles would a range of 100km and all under American command.

Abe strikes conciliatory note on S Korea

and when the South Korean courts sell Japnease assets, it won't make any difference.

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Abe should really be an adult as he is now over Moon and propose a way for peaceful severance of diplomatic ties between Japan and Korea. A lot of marriages would end up in homicides if there were no divorce. Likewise, it's better for two countries to sever ties, as in the case of Japan and Korea. Both may even thrive. And it can be done in a peaceful and respectful manner. Time for Abe to take initiative now!

7 ( +14 / -7 )

Japan realizing it needs SK to defend itself ...

-19 ( +7 / -26 )

South Korea used extreme diplomacy, brinksmanship. Abe buckled and he's still bending over. But that is good for the general welfare of the region.

LOL, It was Moon who caved on GSOMIA. Moon got rolled like a sushi roll.

23 ( +25 / -2 )

Abe said South Korea was supposed to be the "most important neighbor".  He didn't say South Korea was the "most important neighbor".

20 ( +21 / -1 )

Korea is militarily stronger (not) than Japan

The delusion with this statement is so high even after a long hibernation.

tinawatanabe: "Abe said South Korea was supposed to be the "most important neighbor". He didn't say South Korea was the "most important neighbour"."

Doesn't change the fact that they still are. They also help Japan most, more or less, when they are in need, like when the last major earthquakes and floods hit. They were second only to Taiwan that time around. And with Japan being a mere 41% self-sufficient with food, they need SK more than ever.

-23 ( +2 / -25 )

There will never be any real improvement in SK-JPN relations until Moon is out and replaced with an Administration that is willing to face the real history of Korea 1910-1945, end the brainwashing in SK schools, and putting an end to the use of anti-Japan sentiment as a poltical and diplomatic tool.

Japan has no need to accomodate anything for South Korea until they correct their pattern of breaking agreements and violating treaties.

smithinjapan

Doesn't change the fact that they still are.

Abe said "supposed to be", by which Abe suggests politely SK is not the most important neighbor.

They were second only to Taiwan that time around.

which never reached Japan I heard.

Imagine if these 2 countries were to collaborate, particularly in the areas of technology and cultural exports.

I guess we'll have to wait for at least a few more generations before that happens.

Thankfully, cultural exports from both countries, anime and K-pop in this case, have brought the younger generations much more together and in a friendly relationship.

Look at the future, what you'll leave to the next generations, don't keep dwelling on the past. The past doesn't change.

The future can.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Chain of events: South Korea buys no Papanese beer - Papanese breweries get less money from South Korea - Abe Shinzo gets less money in taxes from Papanese breweries - Abe Shinzo has less money to eat - Abe's stomach gets less food - Abe's brain starts working better because his stomach is not full anymore - it's again good time for Papan to remarry South Korea!!! Hoorray!!!

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

The most important neighbor for Japan is obviously China.

@Samit Basu

"Hence Korean children must constantly be reminded of the past in order to ask them to make the sacrifice they are making to ensure that Korean military supremacy over Japan is maintained"

.......................

Come on, perhaps it's about time to enter the 21st century? Japan is the LAST of the neighbors that would attack SK in the foreseeable future. SK is surrounded by pretty much rogue states as far as the eyes can see. And yet you are still lamenting about Japan, which is by far the most democratic country in your region (even including SE Asia)!?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@Jeff Ko

"Abe should really be an adult as he is now over Moon and propose a way for peaceful severance of diplomatic ties between Japan and Korea. [....]. It's better for the two countries to sever ties"

.........................

And what exactly would be the alternative? Russia? China? North Korea?? Japan and SK are the ONLY proper democracies in both East and SE Asia (besides Taiwan), where political and human rights are respected as a national policy (not merely as a gift by a rare humane leader).

In other words, Japan and SK are simply forced to work together, if they wish to remain in the global family of ethical and free nations.
