the war the war... blah blah blah.

China is aggressively trying to expand based on very questionable historical claims.

Who decided which part of history we rewind to, of course every country wishes to rewind to their advantage.. thats not how the world works.

Asia seems has a real problem with moving forward.. you will say silly western man you have no idea what you are talking about.

I have been to Germany, I have been to places where members of my family were targets for genocide, I personally come from a country where while not a high population per capita had some of the highest loses of any involved country... do I hold a grudge.. do I want revenge.. do I want to claim.. no I look back on that history and the folly of man, the dangers of unchecked leaders, nationalism and people who put grudges and ideas of their countries exceptionalism above others lives and welfare with great trepidation and sadness but a resolve that we shouldn't let the worst of human nature make put us in those terrible places again.

It is China who again is the country in the area (other than its sponsorship of North Korea) who looks the most worrying at this time, who is showing those most similar warning signs.

Japan is not claiming the South China Sea. Neither is the US, or Australia, or UK or France or the SEA countries. They are taking the position that it is international waters. It is the Chinese dictatorship alone that is claiming all of the SCS with their ridiculous 9-dash line, and militarizing it by arming the artificial islands. This kind of unilateral territorial expansion is not seen as "peaceful" by the rest of the world. BTW at the end of WWII, Japan returned islands to the ROC. Not the PRC which did not even exist in 1945.

Akie its everyones business when the status quo is being challenged, there is no doubt China is doing this.

Its everyones business when countries have military buildups, there is no doubt this is what China is doing.

China doesn't "own" or have access to everything.

The war the war...bit sick of hearing about it lately.. but its time to move on Japan is not being and has not been anything like that since that time, the only country in the area acting anything like that and showing those same worrying signs is China.

Japan and South Korea need to sort their woes out quickly as they must have a better relationship to stop a shift of power in the region.

A lot of concern about the South China Sea, but not concern about the number of islands the US has annexed in the Atlantic and the Pacific, no concern about the 800 military bases the Us has around the world or the fact that the US has been at war for the past 75 years. not concern about the number of islands the US has annexed in the Atlantic and the Pacific, no concern about the 800 military bases the Us has around the world or the fact that the US has been at war for the past 75 years.

There is a big difference. The USA believes in spreading Freedom, Democracy and Rule of Law. Chinese hate freedom and democracy, and never follow ruke of law. Look at Hong Kong. Look at South China Sea. Look at Tibet and Uighur. This is exactly why democratic, freedom loving ASEAN and Japan wont ever back down to PRC.

ASEAN nations look to Japan to lead the way in standing up to bully Communist China. Japan and these free nations are not going to just stand by and allow PRC to illegally claim all the South China Sea.

Great job, Minister Kono, great job.

Japan has sided with China against the trade war the US was ready to engage in.

Visited China and met with Xi when Canada arrested Huawei daughter, exchange currency, deals on co development of infrastructure in Asia and beyond.

Both countries agreed to better relations, Japan on many issues China cares about they try to be silent. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Muslim regions. Chill no need to get wield up.

Indeed, sure the US for all their faults and self interest has been very present, but for Asia that has accompanied a long and prosperous peace and general increase in rights.

If it came down to it I would stand next to my Japanese hosts and my adopted home to protect their sovereignty from the threat of dictators and those that want to control the lives of their citizens, what information they see, where they can gather, being able to say what I want.

For example I’m fairly confident if I were in the position to speak to Abe face to face and tell him all the policies and attitudes I disagree with, I’m not going to convince him otherwise but I’m not going to be put in jail.. not going to be deported, disappear, have my finances unfairly suddenly scrutinized.. I don’t believe that is the case with some of the other countries people in here so proudly advocate for.

The great democracy experiment is by no means perfect but it’s the best we have done so far in as far as extending maximal rights and freedoms to as many people as we can.

China claimed the Sea since the end of the war, following international laws, based on history

Ah no. Somebody just drew a line after WW2. That's it. No formal studies; no formal international claims; no historical supporting documents. Somebody just drew a line. That's it; that's how it started.

I didn't say they are perfect in anyway, not even a fan, but infinitely better than the other current power postering for control.

The tension has been quite high between China and Vietnam over the last few weeks, Japanese drilling companies which are contracted by Vietnam government have also been under water cannon attacks from Chinese ships.

We don't know what about to unfold as neither side is backing down.

Again "concerns" and "resolutions" and basically all talk without any resolve to take any action.

What actions would the combined nations take..?

Targeted actions are fine and planned actions are fine... but "state" it and not just talk about it.

Better worrying the hostile tri-relationship deteriorating between North Korea, South Korea and Japan! The south China sea was nothing strange just calm as usual! While north east Asia is going to be explode!

A photo joke.

Ganbare Japan, NZ2011: Toppling and invading other nations is NOT democratic! Annexing Pacific and Atlantic islands is NOT democratic. Its taking over 800 US military bases to impress US style democracy.

Much has been written about the annexation of Islands by the US, reading history is wonderful.

A lot of concern about the South China Sea, but not concern about the number of islands the US has annexed in the Atlantic and the Pacific, no concern about the 800 military bases the Us has around the world or the fact that the US has been at war for the past 75 years. why would China not want to protect itself from being force to accept the US style of so-called democracy?

Some readers here need to investigate the aggression of the US over the past 75 years in its attempt at global domination? How many governments has the US toppled around the globe, how many wars has the Us instigated in an attempt to dominate the globe? Which nation now wants a Space Corp to militarise space.

In fact, during WW2, Japan claimed much more than the Sea, covered Philippines too. China claimed the Sea since the end of the war, following international laws, based on history (Japan, the civilized westerners frequently invaded the area, killing people by millions). If Japan wants a fight in the Sea, go for it, but it will not be welcomed.

Kono is a good diplomat, and a potential future PM. But Kono should stop involving himself in the South China Sea. His comment such as "has been deteriorating every year" is very vague and he should clarify it against "guessing" by the fake media. The worst scenario was during WW2 when Japan invaded almost all the South East Asian countries, and declared the South China Sea as Japan's own. If Japan can use force and violence to claim the Sea thousand miles away. why can't China to claim it peacefully based thousand years discovery and usage ? Japan has no legal basis to state that the water is disputed, because Japan returned it back to China, not to Vietnam !
