turbotsat at Dec. 29, 2016 - 08:12AM JST Carrier groups haven't been tested in the modern era of anti-ship missiles and nuclear IRBMs. Have they?

................................................

Though I am not sure of the role played by the HMS Sheffield in the Falklands War (probably part of a screen), I remember the carnage an Exocet missile fired by the Argentines caused. In particular I recall the images of burning metal. Let's hope that carrier groups - of any nationality - are not subjected to such punishment.

lostrune2 at Dec. 27, 2016 - 07:20PM JST I'm not military, but how long can an aircraft carrier expect to "live" when the fish start running and the missiles start flying?

Aircraft carriers never travel alone - they're always part of a battle group, surrounded by vessels protecting and supporting it

As I said, the carrier IS the target and a determined attacker will thrust home.

The peanut gallery in Okinawa will be quiet today about the US presence

If you ask Peanut South Korean Villiagers who have already kicked out US bases from their prime land, they will reply never say never die.

Okinawa closet neighbor Phillipines Kicked out US bases of Subic and Clark. They have hosted for a long time. Pinoys know that US will never shed their blood for their territorial interest because Phillipines is not Middle East.

Kuwait has not hosted US base until 1991. US still fought for Kuwait. Japan is not Kuwait. Japan has zero oil deposit.

When will US of the A send USS Carrier for Japan for a few rocks on inhabited Island?

Before election, Trump has already said Japanese will be watching Sony TVs, when US has been attacked. It may be other way around after his inaguation.

When people say monitoring..It means we are not doing anything.

So if it's not capable of carrying aircraft, can it truly be considered an 'aircraft carrier'? A veritable Buddhist conundrum...

Funny someone said theres no aircraft on the china aircraft carrier. Are u sure there are no aircrafts onboard? I am not supporter of china, but lets not underestimate their capabilities.

So long as it's on international waters, countries can monitor each other all they want

They got a personal invitation from Onaga and planning a port visit to Naha.

Sounds like harrassment. It is next to their country. Imagine the news if china did it to an American aircraft carrier on the other side of the world?

Still, it's a pretty provocative think to do. They certainly fancy themselves at this point.

How sad China is, showing off with their new aircraft carrier and yet one obviously glaring point that few notice. Where are the aircraft? That ship might as well be a container cargo ship because its whole purpose is a joke when the Chinese don't have aircraft that can land on those ships. The Chinese copy just about everything of the western world except good manners and real skills. Even when they steal all the tool and die sets to build a plane (just ask McDonnell Douglas), they still can't get it to work without outside help and ten years of cost and time over runs. Just one of the reasons they are building their low tech islands in the South China Seas so they can base aircraft in the region.

There'll be US, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese subs a few clicks behind it.
