to return 3 months' pay over My Number issues

3 months pay but no bowing and no resignation?

Actually I think he is a rare good professional, among the rest of the politicians. Introducing any new system will have the potential for errors, so nothing extraordinary has happened. The damages because of the mistakes are not very significant and they were fixed as they appeared.

Giving back his salary does not absolve him of the errors.

I was once late for a job and was fired

Japanese politicians generally do as they like and censure is extremely lacking

Kono’s gesture is better than nothing but as the rest of the apple is pretty much rotten than it means little

Kono Taro, according to his wishes.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Oh wow! Must be nice, when you have that much money that you can voluntarily give back your salary for your screw ups!

This is just a gesture to the public to make it look like he is taking responsibility for his screw-ups!

4 ( +11 / -7 )

DigiTaro seems like a true believer in the my number/identity card system of control.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

This didn't just happen on his watch, what about his predecessors? Oh yeah, I forgot, they were too busy receiving bribes from NTT. Vote LDP, you get LDP...

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Kono announced he would not resign from his post, saying, "I will continue to devote myself to my duties."

People don't want him to give back money (at least is not what people want the most) but for the failure of the cards to be scrapped already.

Actually I think he is a rare good professional, among the rest of the politicians.

Agree. Others just want to kick a politician.

It was Kono who asked the government to stop using floppy disks.

It was also Kono who took over as COVID vaccination czar to quickly fix Japan’s slowness in getting nearly everyone vaccinated after his predecessors bungled initial negotiations for vaccine supply and the government decided to conduct domestic trials. In fact, Kono was very critical of the push to conduct what he felt were needless domestic trials.

According to him, Pfizer included about 100 Japanese (living outside Japan) in its international clinical trial. However, Japan’s Health Ministry refused to accept that data, claiming that the food consumed by those Japanese differed from the diet traditionally consumed inside Japan.

Japanese Digital Minister Taro Kono must or should have stood down immediately

The My Number Database management system, I would contend has been proven totally unfit for purpose.

My Number should have been subject to a comprehensive wargaming program.

A minimum of 12 months of detailed risk assessment.

The procedure would include hardware failure, simple input misunderstandings.

Risk mitigation covering all possible threats, information integrity, reaction planning to identify so restricting data loss or corruption.

A  DataGuard auditing process with a program to implement clear procedures/practices mitigating virtually any database risk.

These are level one safeguards.

Yet here we are a complete failure to take acceptance of responsibly to manage a huge public database safely.

Keeping the salary and fixing the system immediately would be preferable

And as a result:

Aso shuts up for the next 6-12 months and doesn’t appear in public.

Kishida goes abroad.

The guy has no IT skills and isn’t at fault. How about everyone in the group give back 3 months wages and no bonus and no record high pay raises as previously announced.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Mindset transformation is needed before Digital.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

My current medical card is All I need. I don't want to be forced to have a "My Number Card". I don't trust the system and I would NEVER want my banking information connected with that card.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

What a fiasco!!!!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This guy can't even count to 3, why is he in charge of "digital"

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

How much is 3 months pay?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I would rather he keep the money and announce a delay in the implementation of the My Number system until most of the bugs have been worked our. Giving up your salary for 3 months my be a nice gesture but just sweeps the problems under the carpet.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What the hell is a digital minister? I have never heard of such a political office........ps. Were all his voters digital too?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

"Kono announced he would not resign from his post, saying, "I will continue to devote myself to my duties.""

Well, since devoting yourself to your duties has done the nation so much so far, OF COURSE you shouldn't quit! And three months pay! Oh my, so generous and repentant.

Out of interest, does anyone know of politicians in other Western countries who have taken personal responsibility for bureaucratic errors, and agreed to pay cuts?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Nice! Now how about abolishing the pan to mix up my number card with health insurance. What is the warranty tha medical institutions can't see your personal financial and tax information and vice versa? The mishaps that have happened by now are lame compared to what we may expect ahead!!!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

How much physical paper work is required for the digital minister to return his 3 months' pay?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

How much is 3 months pay?

Most politicians make ¥1,000,000/month as a basic salary. Kono is pretty high up there so more likely ¥2,000,000/month when bonuses and other perks are added in.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@Sam Waters, Thanks for that. Gokai.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@Gokai. Anytime!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Of course we don't know his base salary to make this statement stick. but what else can you expect. Leading a division you have no background in, like all the lol"digitalministers" who can only make statements but have no idea how they would be backed up.

Guess what, making a system to encompass the entire health history and personal info of a nation... kinda hard. But I'm guessing Kono is realizing that now.

He's actually a very competent politician. As mentioned by others above, he's got some wins under his belt. Switching the Japanese public (a big chunk of who are over 65) to a digital setup is no easy task.

You want him to resign ?

Who do you want to take his place ?

He's actually a very competent politician.

Yes he is and he's quite a likeable chap too. However, him giving up 3 months salary just says I'm an arrogant DH who's just showing off the fact that I can easily afford not to be paid for 3 months. Doesn't impress me at all.
