Live there a while and tell us what a force for good China and the CCP are. Our family lost everything to the Red Guards. What do you know?

wow, excellent example of pointing out obvious things.

Now, if the report had concrete ways to alleviate those concerns it would have been much more useful.

China is not asserting rights when it attempts to steal territory and uses coercion and bullying to get something it is not entitled to.

China is force for good in the world.

China's actions prove that statement wrong. China is acting like a nation hungry for empire and it will do what it wants no matter the harm it causes to other nations.

That's it! No more Olympics for you!

Conflict between China and Japan is inevitable now after the Biden/Suga joint statement. Japan broke its 1972 promise with China to recognise Taiwan as CCPs which was in exchange for China renouncing its demands for war reparations from Japan.

No need to worry about anything here. By 2030 the west will be too weak to do anything over here in Asia and China's diplomacy of reuniting Taiwan with the PRC will be finalized. Keep eating your popcorn and enjoy the show.

Confronted by an increasingly antagonistic America, it is only natural that China would strive to increase its defence capabilities, however, its defence budget still remains less than half that of the US.

Except that America is NOT confronting China, a country that has only been "targeted" by US investments and companies aka Apple and Tesla just to name two. The last time China was actually threatened it was America that rescued it. America is defending everyone's freedoms from those who would steal territories not theirs to take.

its defence budget still remains less than half that of the US.

And yet for the money it gets many times more than America for every dollar spent.

Japan's Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, a group of uninhabited islands Beijing claims and calls Diaoyu.

Again, the media has to tell us what they call it in China as if it has any relevance to the issue.

The South Korean government "strongly opposes the Japanese government for repeating a meaningless claim of its sovereignty over Dokdo, which is clearly our territory historically and geologically under international law," ministry spokesman Choi Young Sam said in a commentary.

How can South Korea say they are right "under international law" when they have refused to settle the Liancourt Rocks dispute at the ICJ three times and continue to do so.

Hope for peace but prepare for war ! Its and old saying some one once said rings true in these days .

Nobody ever actually "wins" a war... They just lose fewer young men than the other side does.

At the conclusion of WWII the territory of Germany, Italy and Japan were under allied occupation. The people of those three nations had no government other than the allied occupation administration and their economies were destroyed. Whole cities were flattened. They were no longer sovereign nations but wards of the allies. The outcome of a war is much more than just comparing the body counts. The Soviets lost a lot more people than the Germans did yet in the end they prevailed over Germany and ended up controlling more than a third of Germany's territory including their capital city. The division of territory occupied by the USSR and the allies when the last shot was fired in WWII set the stage for the Cold War that followed and continues to affect the world with the division of Korea. It also set the stage for Mao to defeat Chiang Kai-shek and all the problems the world faces today with modern China. At the conclusion of WWI, the Austro Hungarian and Ottoman Empires ceased to exist. The Ottoman Empire was carved up into the nations of the Middle East we know today, along with Turkey, modern Armenia, Greece and the Balkan states. The winners of those wars reshaped the world. It is a lot more than simply who lost more of their people. Imagine the world today if the Nazis and Imperial Japan had prevailed over the Allies. Now imagine a world where Japan and Korea are under Chinese control. Who wins a war matters greatly but more importantly, learn that deterrence can prevent an aggressive nation from starting a big war that reshapes the world. If you like what you have now, put fourth the energy to defend it because if you do not you can lose it all. My family knows a little bit about that when the Red Guards took everything.

There's not really anything Japan can do to curb Chinese expansion.

Alone? No. But in cooperation with like minded allies China's ambitions can be stopped cold. They must be, unless you wish to suffer what my own family suffered in Shanghai.

By 2030 China's population decline will look like a free fall. It is highly doubtful China's economy in 2030 will be able to support the growing elderly population as its working age population shrinks rapidly ( a decline that began in 2014 btw ). UK, US, Australia and Canada will take a lot of hard working and entrepreneurial people from Hong Kong. The US, Australia and Canada have the great advantage of their immigrant traditions. Those immigrants will keep their population numbers up and their demographics relatively young. Nobody wants to immigrate to China. In the long term China's demographics doom her to a long period of economic stagnation and eventual decline.

I also forgot to mention that at the conclusion of WWI, Japan gained control of all of Germany's island holdings in the Pacific. That mattered greatly. It the stage for Japan's early hegemony in the Pacific, leading to the great naval battles and bloody invasions of those islands in the course of WWII.

Do more, talk less.

Japan does not even sanction China, while the US, EU and CANZUK already did it. Japan is all big talks but no guts nor action.

"Japan is all big talks but no guts nor action."

Au contraire.

They're too busy getting ready to inflict more pain and suffering to the Beyang fleet II.

We all know what happened to the supposedly "invincible" Beyang I.

Oh yeah! China has expanded her naval power greatly in recent years! China is importing more oil and natural gas from Africa and Middle east especially Iran! She needs to strengthen her naval presences around the world! China is definitely unlike Japan that is totally rely on U.S. naval for the sake of survival! What U.S. and her allies were doing in Indo pacific and South China sea is bullying China!

Once they address the Uighur human rights abuse issue, the human rights issues on their dissidents, intellectual property theft, Taiwan, human rights abuse in Hong Kong, dispute with its regional neighbors in the South China sea, cyberattacks issue on the US, then maybe we can call them a force for good.

I'm worried that Japan won't be able to cope if China attacks

What U.S. and her allies were doing in Indo pacific and South China sea is bullying China!

The US doesn't have over 100 "fishing boats" tied rail to rail blocking access to a Philippine island. The US isn't "warning" the Philippine Coast Guard not to conduct training exercises inside their own EEZ. You have misidentified the bully in the region.

I'm worried that Japan won't be able to cope if China attacks

The US would declare war on China under the terms of the US and Japan Mutual Defense and Assistance Agreement and it would not end well for the Chinese. Ultimately I don't think the Chinese want to go there and if the US, Japan and other allied nations can arm up sufficiently and be patient, China's miserable demographics will in time weaken China and reduce the threat greatly. This is China's peak. Their future is not good.

Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, all US allies, also have much of their trade passing through the South China Sea. All are dependent to differing degrees on the same oil sources as China.. The Allies have every right to keep naval power along those sea lanes to protect vital shipping. China is not the only nation with a vital interest to keep the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca open to shipping.
