I suggest a history book @kennyG.

You know why Korea and China are anti Japan? Because they've been treated like dirt by Japan for a long time.

How does your history book describe "treating like dirt" about Korea under Japanese ruling?

Hayashi would be a fool to accept the invitation, as the only reason they would want him there would be to lecture him on the need for Japan to keep its nose out of Chinese affairs, to be totally humiliated.

No wonder there are no arrangements being made.....

Anti-Japan? Though why Korea and China should ever be pro Japan is beyond me.

Perhaps why Taiwan is pro-Japan, and Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar , Phillipines, Malaysia, all those small islands-countries in the pacific are not Anti-Japan would be beyond you.

Same reason Japan wasn't included in AUKUS

How could Japan have joined AUKUS? They are not allowed to militarily help anyone except maybe the US. If they cant fight along side allies then why would they be there? Article nine binds the hands of Japans government. Everyone is aware of it. That therefor does not make it a nation that is thought of for inclusion in a mutual defense treaties.

I know some expect Japan to be included in all things but it has it's internal limitations that effect it's abilities internationally.

I would love for Japan and Australia to have a mutual defense treaty. One gets attacked is like attacking both. It is simply not possible for Japan to enter into such a treaty. So AUKUS membership was and for the moment is impossible. Not for any desire to disadvantage Japan or keep it out of initiative. Japan is a member of QAUD after all. That seems about as far as it can go for now.

how exactly the whole Olympic boycott thing would work

Nice deflection. Obviously you can't answer or you still don't know what the key point is.

How exactly Japan did not show respect?

Learn what respect is first.

I asked you twice to present any proof

Very very naive to think news articles will explicitly use the word 'beg' for diplomatic topics.

@Tom Doley

But to answer your question, how exactly would blocking energy by US work when there are other countries in the world that produce energy?

To answer your question, how exactly the whole Olympic boycott thing would work when there are other countries in the world that would go to the Olympics anyway? Think laterally.

It's ironic that you talk about respect when there's no respect shown to the host. Also, there's a reason why the US doesn't interfere

How exactly Japan did not show respect? And if the U.S. prefers do not interfere and do not keep South Koreans on a leash, then do not expect Japan to say "che-e-ese" on some photo session. Think laterally.

Earn trust first then beg, not the other way around

I asked you twice to present any proof of Japan's begging, you failed to produce anything. Learn how to back up your claims with facts before start of any meaningful discussion. No other way around.

Let me get it straight:

Going off tangent again. But to answer your question, how exactly would blocking energy by US work when there are other countries in the world that produce energy? Think laterally.

it's called self-respect.

It's ironic that you talk about respect when there's no respect shown to the host. Also, there's a reason why the US doesn't interfere. Think laterally.

if the Five Eyes and AUKUS are not interested in Japan that's fine

Earn trust first then beg, not the other way around.

@Tom Doley

What's export got to do with the boycott of the Olympics?

Let me get it straight: you are dismayed because Japan did not say something, but you think it's perfectly normal to provide energy (a good part of which will be used in military hardware production) to the most obvious adversary? The boycott of the Olympics is all-important, but helping China to strengthen its industrial and military might is not? Superb logic mate!

Anti Japanese? Hence you boycott a US led press conference?

Yes, it's called self-respect. If the U.S. is so concerned about the united front it should have reined in the South Koreans who pointedly demonstrated their middle finger in the face of their supposed united front ally.

There were tonnes of lobbying going on by Japan for it to be included. But it failed miserably. Same reason Japan wasn't included in AUKUS

That's why I asked you to elaborate about this lobbying - begging. So far nothing concrete. Anyway, if the Five Eyes and AUKUS are not interested in Japan that's fine, Japan can sail alone.

Japan getting cosy with China? Because its foreign minister was invited there? Several days ago Biden had a lengthy conversation with Xi. Is America also getting cosy with China?

Where have you been? Straight after the Biden Xi summit, Biden announced potential Olympics boycott. Japan? Nope. need to appease China.

And South Korea? Of course as always appeasing China is not it?

Further, when US SK and Japan were meant to give a joint press conference last week to show China a united front, Japan childishly pulls out with a petty excuse, with some experts claiming that Japan did that deliberately to not pee off the Chinese. Needless to say, the US is fuming at Japan's double standards.

Said What? United front to show against China, is this from the mouth of a fore-front of the Anti-Japan cult followers or what?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Why for Japan not to be so adamant about the Olympic boycott is "bad", "appease", but for the U.S. to supply energy to an adversary is "good"? No appeasing there? "Needless to say, Japan is fuming at America's double standards".

What's export got to do with the boycott of the Olympics? This is all to do with human rights in China, something Japan has also raised countless times but is too chicken to do anything to China. Hence the appeasement and double standards.

Tell South Koreans there should be a united front. To stage a clear anti-Japanese act before the meeting was a touch of diplomatic genius.

Anti Japanese? Hence you boycott a US led press conference? Superb logic mate!

Did you actually read the article you provided link to? It says it was Abe's idea to join the Five Eyes and Suga (by the time the article was written) was not so enthsiastic about it. It hardly qualifies as "begging".

You think Abe's idea was just an idea? There were tonnes of lobbying going on by Japan for it to be included. But it failed miserably. Same reason Japan wasn't included in AUKUS. As for Suga, think laterally for a second why he wouldn't be enthusiastic? The guy freezes like a shocked rabbit in front of world leaders.

If he is going then perhaps it is like past politician- to collect first instalment by cash and make a agreement to buy more Chinese dirty cheap goods- collect balance payment by home delivery later.... So cheap....

Don’t go, don’t go!!!!

Ok, while I agree with the underlying sentiment behind many of the posts above, it is singularly unlikely even the CCP mafia would hold the minister of a foreign state hostage unless they really wanted to start hostilities. Business people, tourists and any others they can get their hands on to charge with trumped up offences when it is convenient for some hostage diplomacy yes, but not a senior government official.

A good reason for not going to China for ordinary people.

@Tom Doley

Straight after the Biden Xi summit, Biden announced potential Olympics boycott. Japan? Nope

First, you mentioned that the U.S. boycott is "potential". U.S. stance can change, Japan's stance can change. See no drama there.

Second, if the U.S. is so uncompromising towards China, then why almost all available American LNG goes to China? Why for Japan not to be so adamant about the Olympic boycott is "bad", "appease", but for the U.S. to supply energy to an adversary is "good"? No appeasing there? "Needless to say, Japan is fuming at America's double standards".

Again, where have you been? Japanese officials have been lobbying the US UK and Australian politicians for a while now

Don't go!!!!

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Wang really wasted no time extending the offer.

I get that it is probably pretty early into his appointment to really be making these kinds of visits, so I don't begrudge him waiting for now but arrangements should definitely be done sooner rather than later. Definitely one of the most important states Japan could be meeting with, if not the most important.

Do posters here really think China would hold a foreign national like that, nevermind a foreign diplomat? That is reaching for conspiracy theories.

-9 ( +4 / -13 )

It always helps to talk, but Japan should continue its build up of its military's forces and continue to decouple from China.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

apan gets cosy with China while it begs the west to be included in the five eyes

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Really hope they don't do some hostage diplomacy there.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Why can't China and Japan get closer and improve their relations ??..

That is simple. Because China is after territorial expansion which includes eventually taking Japans Senkaku islands. It expects Japan to hand them over as part of getting "closer". China wants Japan as a subservient vassal state that takes its cue from Peking. As it wants the entire region to be in that mold.

Japan is not going to hand over or allow the Senkaku islands to be taken from them without a fight.

If China truly wants better relations with Japan then it must first renounce it's wrongful claim to the Senkaku's and demonstrate its sincerity for friendship in concrete means. China is not smart enough to do so under Jinping. He has a destiny to fulfill. Just like Hitler and Stalin did.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Please, come in to the monsters lair. What could go wrong?

12 ( +16 / -4 )

Hayashi only said the matter is to be assessed by the Japanese government "on our own."

Good luck with that.

-11 ( +5 / -16 )

Soon after his visit to China, Foreign Minister Hayashi will vanish all of a sudden.

Following international outcry about his whereabout, he may re-appear in a video clip trying to smile and stressing that he is very fine. It's Commie Chinese way of hospitality.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

Japan will never be included in the five eyes because 1) Japan is not an English speaking country; 2) nor has it anti-espionage laws to ferret out and arrest spies.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Japan gets cosy with China while it begs the west to be included in the five eyes. Double standards!

-32 ( +5 / -37 )

Sounds like a trap. Hayashi certainly won't be going.

12 ( +18 / -6 )

It is not safe to go.
