If Japan wanted to "stand up" to Russia, they would ban gas imports. That'll be the day.

Japan banned gas and oil from Crimea. A very sane political decision, by the way.

Japan seems to get fuel from Latin American countries now.

It would be superexpensive for Japanese customers.

@Asakaze

If it wasn't on western media, it didn't happen. Literally. Russian media uses the pictures of other conflicts, including Grozny. I decided to give the Russian media a chance and studied it, but I have seen enough. Some of the news aren't even biased. They are blatant lies which only the most gullible would believe.

With the new deals wi South America, Japan should reduce supplies of LNG from Russia as that would hurt the Russian economy

@SLIP330: it does not matter 30 yrs or 100 yrs Russia and China has deal on Russian natural gas. Japan seems to get fuel from Latin American countries now. Percentage of natural gas dependency will fall down rapidly,

toshikoAug. 06, 2014 - 02:46AM JST Putin signed a massive contract in May to supply China with $400 billion worth of natural gas.

It seems to be alot, but in reality, the $400 billion is spread over 30 years, at substantially lower price than the going international rate. In the future negotiation with the neighboring countries, the barometer of the LNG will be based on Chinese negotiated rates, which means it will be less revenue for the Russians.

Putin signed a massive contract in May to supply China with $400 billion worth of natural gas. Analysts said there are fears that Russia could retaliate to sanctions by canceling joint energy projects with Japan, like one to produce liquified natural gas on the Russian island of Sakhalin.

Sanctions will affect Japanese purchase of Russian Natural Gas. However, When Latin American oil began coming to Japan, Natural gas dependency percentage may decrease.

Sancrion may not sound too much but EU and US will be assured that Japan is not for Russia.

Russia "supports" the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and the US call for sanctions.Japan wants to go along. The US firmly supports the uprising in Syria. Why are there no sanctions? They even wanted to lead an attack on Syrian forces. Maybe Abe will implement sanctions on the US!

All this negativity against Russia... I'm not very informed about this issue, but one-sided arguments usually suggest there's more to actually study and decide for oneself.

<>The faster Russia is sent back to the Middle Ages, the better

The faster you are sent to a mental asylym, the better.

"the rebel scum in Eastern Ukraine"

Scum is in Kiev, rebels just fight to be free from this neo-nazi regime, fight just to be alive. On May 2, in the city of Odessa mobs of pro-Kiev neo-nazi thugs burnt alive and killed with other weapons about a hundred unarmed people, while the police watched and did nothing. And you call this regime "legal government"? Wow, some sense of legality you have. Mr.Assad and Saddam Hussein wouild love your attitude!

"the rebel scum in Eastern Ukraine"

As opposed to some other kind of scum in western Ukraine? For example, the political party Svoboda, who have members in government, and whose policies include indicating ethnic origin on passports and birth certificates.

And why are we still waiting for the air traffic control transcripts of MH17?

These sanctions are yet more pressure on Moscow to end its support for the rebel scum in Eastern Ukraine. If the situation were different and Crimea voted to leave Russia and join Ukraine, Russia would be in an uproar and want it back so why is it suddenly wrong to support the legal government in Kiev? And these sanctions are a reminder to Moscow that it can't use the STOLEN AND ILLEGALLY OCCUPIED Northern Territories as leverage to try and bully Jaoan into following Moscow's lead.

Sanctions against Poklonskaya? It's hilarious.

Good on them. The faster Russia is sent back to the Middle Ages, the better

If Japan wanted to "stand up" to Russia, they would ban gas imports

That would be like seppuku, because Japan mostly use Russian gas.

Finally, Japan is seeing sense and standing up to Russia
