Japan lodges protest with China over ships near disputed islets

Remember, it was Ishihara who started all this. Japan and China in previous administrations understood the precarious nature of this territorial dispute and in diplomatic terms, agreed that this problem would be "shelved." In many ways it's the same as the US neither admitting or denying the storage or transport of nuclear weapons through Japan. In other words, don't bring it up and it won't be a problem. Big mouth Ishihara's legacy is alive and well and people are still cleaning up after him, not only Japan, but also in Tokyo.

If referring to the nationalization of the islets, you're mistaken. It was done under the Noda government, led by then the ruling party Democrats. And it is the China side who got started with this provocation through a series of territorial intrusion. They also assaulted a ship of Japan coastguards, whose scene was videotaped and published.

Akie and dbsaiya: What are you 2 on about? This is a country minding its own business. Japan can do whatever it likes with those islands within international law. China should just clear off and fix the monumental mess they unleashed on everyone.

When will Japan learn? Lodging protests doesn't have any effect.

Such aggression should get more than just a strong urging. Until something physical happens, China will continue.

Japan should install military outpost and heavily arm it any approaching vessels should be warned once then sunk !

Japan Coast Guard ships don't. MSDF escort ships (destroyers / frigates) have torpedoes. So far the situation does not require direct involvment of MSDF. May be it will be next level. Japan should be ready for any provocation and stay firm.

The existence of a "Chinese car dealership" on the island would support their argument for De Facto control and boost their claim of ownership.

Besides, they would not hestitate to attack one of their own car dealers. The primary objective of the CCP is to protect it's own existence and power. Chinese citizens, business entities come way behind.

Japan needs to build a JSCG or JMSDF station on these islands. Like 10 years ago.

You forgot to mention that Ishihara made his claims at the behest of the anti-Chinese, right-wing Heritage Foundation while he was in the U.S.

When Japan can actually send military force to the Northern Territories and Sakhalin Island, like they are doing with China along with nationalist truckers, then I can actually believe any of these meaningless shows of force can make any difference.

Don’t mistake my tongue! I am against China as much as Trump does. However, I simply doubt Japan’s ability of making any difference. If LDP is serious on taking down China, they should have taken any economic sanctions against China long ago. There is virtually none!

Xi Jinping is a supremely insecure and controlling thug. He has none of the confidence of his predecessors. A literal bull in the jewelry store. The CCP under Xi only understands raw force. Shoot up a couple of their Coast Guard vessels that enter Japan's territorial waters, fire at their patrol planes when they intrude into Japanese airspace and the Chinese will take the Japanese seriously. It wouldn't hurt to have some US forces nearby and within clear sight of the Chinese, just to make the point clear.

Tokyo, when Shintaro Ishihara was Governor of it, tried to buy Uotsurijima/Diaoyudao from a private owner and turn it to a resort island. But the Noda government foiled Ishihara's scheme, paying a lot more money and thus nationalizing it.

So dbsaiya is correct in a way when he said "it was Ishihara who started all this."

The argument that Ishihara or that the J-govt "nationalized" two of the islands as a cause for the dispute is total nonsense and nothing more than CCP propaganda to incite domestic anti-JP sentment and nationalist fervor over the Senkakus.

The two islands which were "nationalized" were purchased by the J-govt from their Japanese Owners. So they went from Japanese ownership to Japanese ownership. Furthermore, of the 5 islands in question, one was already owned by the J-govt.

Yet the Chinese govt gave their people the impression that Japan had "invaded" one of their islands.

First time I heard the word "wumao." "Wu Mao" is an Internet slang referring to people who work for the CCP to help manipulate public opinion on the Internet, said to be paid a wu mao for remuneration per post, hence they are called "Wu Mao" Party.

Don't we have people here, too, who were either dispatched or recruited locally by Washington to manipulate the Japanese public opinion for what it wants in regard o bases and the U.S. military presence?

Unless the US was willing to formally renounce the "One China" policy and both Taiwan and the US agreed to station US forces on Taiwan as they were before 1971 along with an explicit promise by the US to defend Taiwanese independence I don't think Taiwan would dare. Doing so without explicit US protection, meaning the US saying an attack on Taiwan is an attack on the US, Taiwan going it alone would invite an immediate invasion attempt by the PRC. It's not nice but it's how it is. Xi Jinping is like no Chinese, cough cough, "leader" since Mao. He has even reverted to wearing Zhongshan suit at formal ceremonies.
