The two countries pledged to ensure that the Pacific Island region, where China's influence is rapidly expanding, remains stable and prosperous and free from foreign interference and coercion, and that the "rights, freedoms and sovereignty of all countries regardless of size or power are protected,” according to a statement released by Japan's Foreign Ministry.

And yet the foreign ministry is directly involved in coercion itself with the manner it handled the extradition of suspected criminals from the Philippines, which also happened to coincide with a "security"(military) agreement with them as well.

Japanese foreign policy seems centered on "interference and coercion" through its aid policies as well.

Japan should tread with extreme caution! Mahuta has been described in NZ by many as a CCP puppet. The most egregious fail in NZ's foreign history occurred under her watch (the China/Solomons security deal). It couldn't have been done without massive coordination and whiteanting of South Pacific stakeholders.

NZ has a track record of aligning with China on security issues as well. I fear Mahuta will be a thorn in the SP community side now and in the future.

Many blame her failures as incompetence, IMHO far from the truth, she's just very good at deception. Watchout Japan.

Japan and speed up in the same sentence?

NZ used to be a peaceful safe and friendly country. Now it has become a vassal of USA just like Japan.

Its a shame, it was my runaway place in 2025 when the big war starts.

You can't just decide on a whim to move to a foreign nation to "run away" when a crisis starts. There's little things called residency visas that need to be applied for.

I doubt NZ has the clout to call the shots on deals between two foreign nations - especially when one is throwing aa much cash as Communist China.

the face of Yoshimasa Hayashi does not inspire trust.

Mahuta is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. Come October she and the Labour govt will be gone.

Agree, anything involving Japan will not get done quickly. Also not sure these two have much intelligence to share in the first place

New Zealand with its tail between it's legs, back on board the free world's boat. They got played for a while back there, but luckily learned from the experience, smarter minds prevailed and they reset their course. Welcome back Kiwis and happy sailing! It's gunna be some rough waters, but history will be the judge and you are in good company. United we stand.
