As long as China and the US dominate the world economies, who cares

Yes, Japan should pay their bills every three years with hard earned tax money from the public !

I'm glad the president of Vanuatu was able to visit Tokyo right after visiting Beijing. These small island nations will play off all sides to get some desperately needed investments.

"amid China's rise"
That's a good title. It makes it clear that Japan LDP policy is to try to stop China's development. Exactly what the US is instructing Japan to do. It has nothing to do with alleged threats.

From the opening paragraph , Japan , as the US closest ally in the Pacific region, "seeks to counter China's growing military and economic influence in the area "
But...June 30/2024, The Forum's Gen. Sec. wants US /China contest " out of regions backyard "

The September 2022 meeting outlined 11 goals or statements of direction.
Included were these :
Bolster Pacific Regionalism
Tackle climate crisis
Promote nuclear non proliferation.
Each one of these declarations by the nations actually involved has thus been crapped on by big powers seeking to retain hegemony over the world.
And given the likelihood of a Trump Presidency , how much attention will climate change and nuclear non proliferation get.
The big powers cant even let little Pacific nations alone.

Well done, Japan. Please keep up this interaction with Pacific island nations, especially in their number one area of interest: climate change.
And, of course, in countering China's malign influence. We know much about that thanks to people like David Panuelo of Micronesia:

The problem is not the "rise," but the fact that Beijing becomes ever more aggressive with it.
If China developed peacefully and responsibly -- like post-war Japan, or post-martial law Taiwan or South Korea, for example -- it wouldn't be an issue. But sadly, Xi has made it a huge issue.

As well they should as they may not have much left with climate change.

Gee Mark..."cant really trust those island countries "
Is this the "anti Islanderism " I've been hearing exists. ?

When I think of the USA (and France) in this area I think of atmospheric nuclear testing that displaced and irradiated thousands of South Pacific natives not to mention what the Japanese did before that.
Remind me again of specific examples of Chinese "aggression" in the region.
isabelle
You don't need physical attacks to be aggressive. See my link above for some information (though you will probably denounce it as "slanderous smears that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people" or something).
Furthermore, China's actions in the South China Sea (and elsewhere) are plain for all to see. That is what we can expect in the Pacific too if it gets a foothold there.

Kishi, you look so pathetic being the US boy errands..
deanzaZZR
That's all rather unconvincing. I was hoping to see vivid scenes of Chinese aggression and military threats.
What the people of this vast area of the planet need is peace and economic development not new USA military bases. https://theworld.org/stories/2021/08/24/us-building-military-base-middle-pacific-ocean-micronesian-residents-have

Mark...dinosaurs existed before homo sapiens and were gone when they "arrived."
Palau has been an Australian dumping ground for "illegal boat arrivals " seeking protection in Australia.
Cost Australia hundreds of millions, probably more.
Why would China do a cyber attack on Palau ?
Tell me again....why is everyone expecting China to NOT want to boost it's own and regional security ?
Why is China expected to behave in a "pure manner " when no other big nation does. ?
When China actually invades these Pacific nations and installs puppet governments I'll change my mind on China.
Until then, the hypocrisy of the China haters , condemn China, no words on Gaza, for example, remains the most obvious conclusion.
And Australia has sent Police and regional peacekeepers to the Solomons and other Pacific Island nations .
GuruMick
As for "debt trap " spoken of ....see World Bank and other world lenders for examples of that.
The west and minions practice economic bribery and threats too.
Long before China even came onto the radar.

Rational statements attract "down votes "....prejudice reigns supreme.
God Save the Clowns.

But China is the largest lender to the global south. Because it practices usury.

As long as the aim is to boost ties/relationship/help each other/trade/etc, sincerely. It will be beneficial for both.
However, if, you have another agenda? Political?. It will be just a waste of resources. No fools left in the world/in geopolitics.
