What is insulting about that? I am from a third world country and I am telling the truth based on what I see and the people I know. I live near Japanese industrial factories, and I've seen how terrible they compensate these people. I don't blame JAPAN for it, i blame these Japanese corporations, and this is what Abe trying to bring in our countries.

I agree with you on this one, I love Japan and her people, that is why I am against what Abe is doing because it's not really beneficial to both countries (JP and Vietnam). Normal Japanese, Vitenamese, Filipinos don't want political games either, that is why I am opposing to poiticians like Abe who are using the funds for his politicking where these money is supposed to be used for the normal people's needs. I am criticizing Abe's generosity regardless of Japan's financial problems. There is always a better way to team up against China's bullying but Abe should prioritize his people first!

I have no problems with Japan for Japanese people first. Without more help, or even no previous help, from Japan, most of our people still love Japan. We, ordinary Vietnamese people, don't play political games. We love (Japan) and hate (China) clearly.

what businesses will Japan get from Vietnam other than cheap labor? For you not to be labeled simplistic, I guess you should study some basic economics about international trade and investment. There are a few good posts up here about how ODA funds work, read, think, digest, and you can find some answer to your question.

I don't deny that our relationship with Japan is a mutually beneficial one, but we know that we have received far more from Japan than Japan has from us. Without Japan's generous help, our economy would not have made as much progress as it has. And for this, we are grateful to the Japanese people; we feel indebted. In return, not only will we repay their loans, but we will also give Japanese companies more business opportunities over others as our economy keeps growing – fair enough!

Thanks for your insult! Easy for you to say when you are just on the leeching end just receiving these billions and when it's not your money being spent. I don't have issues with it If these funds and ideas are coming directly from any private sectors without pressures from the government. Try to see it from a point of view of a Japanese tax payer especially the ones who live in Tohoku and Kumamoto. Your hometown is still far away from getting rebuilt, you are still living in temporary housing, the threat of Nuclear power plant remains unsolved, the future of your economy is uncertain and spiraling down, un-employment rate is rising, no salary increases for a long time now, the pension is having issues and yet your Prime Minister is giving away Billions of Money without thinking of the risks! The agenda is very clear, alliance against China! I have less issues with this thing with Vietnam as Abe is more honest on his agenda and at least what you guys received were "Loan", unlike with Philippines when he is trying to sugar coat it as "Financial Aid to Help solve the country's issue" but obviously he is just courting Duterte because he is the guy who became an ally of China. That's why he got more (8 Billion). So If Vietnam wants to leech more money from Japan? Try to make friends with China, I bet you guys will get more. In a very rough explanation, US and EU printed around 3 times more money of theirs, US$ and Euro in last decades to deal with "Lehman Shock" and other things like government debts they could never pay back. The amount they printed is BIG. really BIG.

But Band of Japan didn't. We didn't print.

As the result, JP Yen became much rare against US$ and Euro. Since the beginning of 2nd Abe administration BOJ is working hard to print a lot of JP Yens but still not enough to match US$-Euro-JP Yen balance. This is the time Japan should keep doing big QE along with proceeding other policies Abe brought up.

We don't have timber for export; we have to import timber to manufacture wooden furniture for export. Access to shrimp/tuna? Hilarious! It's our marine products export companies that have been desperate to enter the Japanese market. It's not easy to gain entry into one of the pickiest markets in the world in terms of quality inspection. So many countries have shrimps/tuna wanting to sell to Japan, from nearby Taiwan, the Philippines, to Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, to even as far away as Panama. It's the BUYER's market! Japan is in the position to choose which countries to buy shrimps/tuna from; Japan does not need to lobby for access to shrimps/tuna.

"Roads and bridges there paid for by Japanese ODA ..." and "The money then gets funneled right back to Japan." Fair exchange! They got the money back but left us with top quality systems of high ways, road, bridges, tunnels, and other industrial complexes that have modernized our country.

Who would have built things for us free of charge? By the way, I am curious to know which country, (yours?), would have been so nice as to have advanced us with ODA without getting "the money funneled right back to its land"? Recently France provided us with a tiny amount of loan to make train cars for a new elevated route in Hanoi, on the very condition that the train cars be ordered from a French company! That's the rule of game, which we accept. In fact, we would rather have the top-of-the-world Japanese quality over anyone else's for our infra structure.

It's not helping the economy of these countries at all then as he promised, and there is nothing new to this, Japan has been doing this way before with their businesses in third world ASEAN countries. All they want is cheap labor, doesnt provide progress at all. So I think better to just leave these countires alone or be a TRUE fair Partner to them rather than acting helpful but in the end there is really a hidden agenda. If the US is seeking bilateral agreements, and fair for both, then allow the Japanese military to train on a US base. We are allies afterall. The US trains in Japan with numerous bases, why not say let Japanese troops be based in say California, and train. This way if war and the Pacificist Constitution is changed, then Japan can immediately help its US inside their own territory. It is time for both countries to really work together and trust one another.
