Koizumi saying it might be difficult for Abe re-election is HUGE!

Maybe Abe is seeking advice from Trump, and will probably come back to start a small argument with a neighboring country in order to act as a distraction. Wonder which country will be his choice ?

Don’t worry about the popularity of alternatives, just recall that Yukio Hatoyama once led the DPJ to victory.

Isn't it amazing what rich criminals can get away with

analysts say there are still few viable alternative candidates.

And therein lies the problem.

Quick someone gather some random people holding up signs of support for ABBY to help encourage everyone to not focus on the scandals and make claims of how great abby’s Economic and foreign policies are! :-/

Good luck finding any. Abe doesn't appear to be as good at generating enthusiasm as he is at inspiring loathing and contempt.

What is approval rate of nearest competitor. Single digit. No one else has experence or is qualified to take over. Koizumi needs a few more years to take the job.

Ganbare Japan - maybe you should read the news more and comment on it less. This is from Kyodo two days ago..

On the question on who should be elected in the LDP presidential election, Abe remained respondents' third preference after former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba and Shinjiro Koizumi, a rising star in the ruling party and a son of charismatic former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Ishiba and Shinjiro Koizumi won 26.6 percent and 25.2 percent of support, respectively, while Abe secured 18.3 percent. It is the first time that Abe's support has slipped below 20 percent.

Stay on the course, PM Abe. Summit very soon in mar-a-lago.

Amari-san took 100 grand and was given a slap in the wrist and told to resign by Abe PM, then went back to Yamato City in Kanagawa and under 100% support from Abe PM ran for election again and won!!!! I do not understand this place.

The people vote to parties and LDP is kind of politically sovereign in Japan. And, LDP choose by their vote the prime-minister. So, what's the meaning of citizen vote? Something is evident: There's no direct citizen vote to top-leader(s). That's time to LDP to clean up all of those cronyism, bureaucratic management, fusible right wing groups and so forth. Fresh govt. administration without Abe is the right direction as it is currently LDP the only party who Japanese citizens have credit.

Abe has no-one to blame but himself. Still, the alternatives are not exactly inspiring. The shiny-faced buffoon Ishiba looks like taking over next, hardly an improvement.

The emperor has no kimono on. Abe is pretty much finished, but he's too arrogant and full of himself to step down for the good of the party. If he was a true idealist and not just a narcissist he would have stepped down by now for the good of the party. But he isn't and won't. With any luck, he cause the LDP to lose the next election- fingers crossed.

boy I will be mad at my fellow species.

Prepare the tissue.

The poor old grandson of an A-class criminal scum will be thrown aside, but the problem will not disappear from politics with him. I hope the protestors and society are starting to understand, little by little, that the politics of deceit and corruption permeates the whole LDP, who were left nigh unchallenged since the end of WW2. If the wave of discontent with the government ends with only Shinzo Abe gone, boy I will be mad at my fellow species.
