A Japanese government panel tasked with tackling rising prices and wage issues will meet on Friday and consider additional policy measures that should be taken, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Sunday.

To temper the overwhelming relief and joy of the Japanese populace that yet another government panel will convene to "tackle" the decades long wage issue, it should be said that all signs point to the conclusion, as always, will be : How much money does Dentsu need to come up with a new slogan after "New Capitalism"?

That one didn't work out too well.

Is it premium Friday this week?

13 ( +21 / -8 )

The inflation problem is at least 18 month old and wages problem more like 18 years so it's good to see they are getting around to have a coffee chat about it on Friday. Don't hold your breath for any action.

How exciting! The 60% of the population on part time or short term working contracts are going to get a 30% wage increase and penalty rates for weekends. Then, the government is going to abolish sales tax to put more money in families’ pockets. NOT!

It’s just the same old bunch of cronies sitting around a table for hours gasbagging about ways they can make the public feel better without actually spending any money.

Yes, and.....? Are they listening to the people or their own self interests? I think just another roundtable meeting, nothing else.

Japan takes care of business meeting after meeting until the problem or concern naturally takes care of itself.

It's now or never. After 20 years in the wildnerness, inflation is expected to be 3% when data is next released. If that's not enough for wages to rise, I don't know what else is needed.

It's obvious from profit rises that productivity gains are locked in. QT is also going to remove the easy money off of government debt (read - robbing ordinary citizens to pay for corporate bonuses).

Corporates will have to earn money from their operation now, and if they don't treat their workers fairly, workers might quiet quit, and profits won't ensue.

If the LDP were serious about people’s wellbeing they’d lower the consumption tax or offer some other tax break.

But the LDP isn’t serious. They know they’ll be re-elected no matter what.

"I would like to compile additional measures and implement them without hesitation,"

Hahaha... yeah. Like this started yesterday and they are acting today instead of forming panels to have discussions about discussions about what minister to appoint to form panels and special groups to talk about what panels to form...

"Without hesitation". haha. They've had almost two years to act on this.

yes!!! another money printing!!!!!!!!!!! what else?? food stamps??

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Another panel, another meeting, another screw-up, and another nothing ever gets actually done moment, and the people will still take it, as if Prime Minister__(Fill in the blank) of the LDP, is actually doing something.

To ensure the participants have enough energy to discuss all the important points and come up with a plan of action, the meeting will be held at a swanky private retreat costing more that the yearly salary of most Japanese citizens. The outcome of the meeting is very positive…..Premium Wednesday.

How about stopping sanctioning Russia as a start? We are about to lose 10% of our energy, which could serious effect 20% of Japanese businesses.

I agree, gold is king!

I worked for a small Japanese company and a few of the staff told me that nothing is ever decided in any of the meetings and eventually TIME decides the outcome and results ...Usually incurring added costs and stress to staff coz of the last minute decision/ rush.

Nothing will ever change here and the low salary issue will continue unabated for another decade at least.

Sad state of affairs.

Time to give the minions 5% if they are lucky...

Kishida says gov't panel on inflation and wages to meet Friday

i mean don’t need to rush……

this problem has only been going on for decades now.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

The government has spent decades moaning about the frightening aspects of the “deflationary spiral,” and the need to keep setting inflation targets for the fiscal health of the nation.

Sigh . . .

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

well i dont expect any outcome from one friday meeting as more than 18yo old problem have to be solved,so result may be we will meet next friday again etc...

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Know that the situation won’t improve…anytime soon!

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Kishida said the government should consider reviewing and raising subsidies for regional revitalization so they can be used to respond effectively to surging prices.

Go to travel 2.0. That's all that's going to come out of that panel.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

He said they would meet, but didn't say they'd do anything about it.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Raise sales tax to 15%, oh, they are already doing that. Maybe 17.5%?

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Why not urgently meeting today? I wonder what’s expected to become better between today and Friday.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Companies are more profitable than ever but somehow they can’t pass that on to the workers in any capacity. Hmm. Government needs to get a lid on it, we’ll they should have decades ago.

I look forward to more short term contract jobs with wage and renewal restrictions while their new year speech talks about how much money they are making

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Friday? Just loving the sense of urgency.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And the panel will come up with....???.... you guessed it. Not very much.

To be seen to be making effort is all that really matters for politicians. I'd say very few of the them would lose any sleep over high prices - if they are even aware of them at all.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Hope it will not be another "GoTo" kind of campaigns.

Wages and Inflation would settle at their opposite poles

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If they don't raise the interest rates like other countries because of their bad loans for pork barrel government projects, the Japanese people in consumers will be left with the tab again. What a failure.

Abolishing the sales tax doing away with the gas tax should be on the table

The thinking of the s昭和哲学自民党(Showa Philosophy LDP)

They elect us because they honor and respect us.

The people do not need help because its disrespectful to ask for it and worse to accept it. プライドが高い

Why should we the LDP help the citizens as long as big business is not affected. We will do our best to continue to urge businesses to raise wages and the people will just do their best 頑張れ!and we will continue to ask for help from ご協力をお願いthe group to help the government especially after the inflation goals are met for a higher sales tax and continue to urge companies who will never higher wages to higher wages.

Why Japan will continue to fail and decline or rather rust away

Japan is a majoritarian country and has been for decades by electing the LDP election with only a few exceptions and unless things change from within the country Japan will just continue on the same path for decade after decade until the problem really becomes unfixable and there is nothing to do but change by then the question will the opposition be prepared to take charge or be taken off guard. Be prepared for anything this might happen sooner rather then latter.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The 1%ers seem a little slow on this. I you pay workers more, they will spend more, and the 1%ers will get even more rich.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

A very simple answer- STRIKE! The local sheeple have not had a strike since the 60’s and their reward has been stagnant wages and being screwed by the management since the bubble burst. If they don’t work for change then the LDP, government and the Moonies will give the people a proper dose of prison love they so deserve.

Kishida said the government should consider reviewing and raising subsidies for regional revitalization

How about crowdfunding that, because it sounds like taxes down the drain to me.
