Kohima now, denuclearisation meeting next

English references haven't adopted the new reading of 硫黄島. Can be read as Iwojima or Iwoto. The US will likely keep the old name from WWII, lest they have to rename The USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2 Assault ship).

A month of fierce fighting to conquer 8 square miles of territory. The US estimated that to invade and conquer Japan would entail a million allied casualties, and many times more than that of Japanese casualties. The USSR would have been welcomed as a co-invader, and afterward Japan would have been divided like Korea, with North Japan and South Japan.

how different the post war world would've been if that had happened

I appreciate how the USA seemingly randomly maintained possession of Iwoto until 1968. For what purpose, I cannot guess.

No more a mystery than China's dog russia still holding clearly Japanese islands for 80 years.

This statement is completely unrelated to the status of Iwato but what I do appreciate TINC doing here is comparing USA imperialist behavior to a country he holds in contempt, Soviet Union/Russia. Bonus points for childish language.

And yet still no relevance from the original statement by the failed professor.

Iwoto was returned as part of the Bonin Islands. Part of it was a lingering distrust of Japan that took time to resolve and part of it was an American appraisal that Japan couldn't defend the islands if they were returned to their sovereignty. By 1968 the US was ready to let them go.
The US and Japan could not yet come to terms on the return of the Ryukyu Islands as many in the US Congress argued at the time that the amount of American blood shed to capture Okinawa made it impossible to ever return it to Japan.

Lol, USS Iwo Jima LPH-2 was scrapped in 1995. USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) is a Wasp Class LHD commissioned in 2001 and remains in service.

the battle of iwo jima was studied every year at the usna for 60 years. the same conclusion was reached every year that the invasion was poorly executed for not following the doctrine of naval bombardment at the time and most all, not necessary.
the island was surrounded so no resupply would happen. air-sea rescue of crew in damaged aircraft returning from mainland missions was highly developed and resulted in few crew losses. the necessity of the airfield on iwo jima was justified after the invasion and in response to massive demonstrations in washington, d.c. by families and others upon learning of the casualties.
the net result every year by students was that it was not necessary, but had a positive impact on usmc recruiting.

Wife and I met one of the last surviving non combatant Japanese ...he was a young boy at the time of the battle.
He was getting around on a motorized wheel chair , enjoying the sea air in a little village near where we live .
Interesting man...not embittered or anything like that.
