Only Japan is making it out to be disputed. It's not disputed. It's Russia's islands and Russia can do whatever they like on them. As the Japanese love saying to other nations, get over it and move on.

Yes. Everything belongs to Russia. Why not.

Ukraine. Why not.

Half of Europe. Why not.

All of Siberia, parts of Japan, parts of China? Why not.

Give everything to Putin so we can be poor just like all the countries that was with you, and begged to join EU and NATO after USSR collapse.

No, the four islands in the Northern Territory are Japanese, but currently still occupied by Russian military and settled civilians , that situation continued from the former Soviet Union’s occupation. They have to be given back without doubt and the Russians should have done that already after the end of the USSR. What is really still under dispute or a negotiation mass, are the other Kuril Islands up to Kamchatka and the Southern part of Kurafuto / Sakhalin as a package. That has indeed still to be discussed and anyhow distributed per treaty.

Only Japan is making it out to be disputed.

False. The United States, United Kingdom and the European Parliament recognize the four islands as Japanese territory under Russian Occupation/Administration.

Well, Japan has to have something to complain about.

16 ( +23 / -7 )

Towards the end of the WW2, the Soviet Union, in violation of the Neutrality Pact that was still in force between Japan and the Soviet Union, declared war on Japan. Even after Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration, the Soviets continued their offensive against Japan and occupied all of the 4 northern islands from 28 August 1945 to 5 September 1945.

Lord Putin, be nice !!..

5 ( +16 / -11 )

Excellent timing from Russia. Reminding Japan of both the carrot it holds and the stick it wields.

16 ( +19 / -3 )

let me say that russian army did drill at their own soil.

as army of sovereign army have 100% right to do so.

Kuril islands are part of Russian federation.

let me ask other question-does that japanese politician protesting also when US army doing drills in Japan/foreign army at japanese soil/?

I have never heard single "complaint" about that...and yes there is one significant "little difference"...

The Russians were “persuaded” to move a naval exercise and live firing out of the Irish EEZ by the Irish fishermen’s association threatening them, perhaps the Japanese fishermen can have more impact than the Japanese government!

Russia is really trying to piss off as many countries around the world as they can at the moment. One has to question why? One logical answer is Putin realises they are going to be very much the junior partner to their new masters China, and is trying to strengthen his hand in the narrow window of opportunity he has currently before the money dries up.

Sadly for Japan there is little chance Russia will give up the islands and China won’t allow them to as it would close off the pacific to their navy even more than currently, and Japan has no leverage sufficient to outweigh that.

The best they can do is use the opportunity to gather as much intel as they can and let their subs practice!

Those were Russian islands now, Japan making waves to generate domestic nationalisms!

Nobody complains about USA occupation of 3.5% of Japan, over 70 years after the war ending.

we should concentrate on trade with Russia.

-10 ( +10 / -20 )

Russian territory, get over it.

Pressure over the Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. Gamesmanship. While homicidal maniacs in the Pentagon lick their chops looking to start WW3. It is all of a piece.

While I understand there are people fundamentally opposed to the US for democracy, capitalism and human freedoms that is espouses and often time fails at. But 'homicidal maniacs" in the Pentagon looking to start WW3 is just plain and simple lies. What do such lies get anyone? Does posting them make some feel a little better that they have "hit out" at an America they despise? Who do they think will believe such lies? A similar but opposite poster would say the "homicidal maniacs" in the Kremlin lick their chops looking to start WW3. How different is it? Nobody who actually understands what a world war does to EVERYONE would say such pure rubbish. Everyone loses lives, infrastructure, assets and futures. Oh the makers of weapons, they make money. Well so many nations make and export weapons, thats alot of people "wanting wars" from every side. We must be doomed.

Leader all over the globe fail their people when they start wars, encourage wars and do not do everything possible to avoid wars. No major power is innocent. Not the US, not Russia, not China, Not England, Not France, Not Italy, Not Spain, Not Japan, Not Israel, or Iran or Iraq or Turkey and the list of those who have started conflicts in the past goes on and on and on, as does the list of allies who have joined conflicts both illegal and righteous.

Nobody in the Pentagon is licking their lips wanting WW3, nor in the Kremlin or Beijing. They may want more than they have, they may want an advantage and influence but they do not want what threatens them all equally and that is another world conflict.

Writing such obvious untruths just makes the poster look silly.

That's because the US occupation of Japan ended in 1952. That's 70 years ago.

How do you figure that? From the armistice in July 1953, until North Korea's first nuclear weapons test in October 2006 and for that 53 years in between, North Korea was not attacked or even threatened (except if it had first made a threat of it's own) with invasion or attack. But now that they have nuclear weapons you say that is all that is keeping violence away? So what kept the violence away for 53 years? Magic?

Nobody is interested in taking over a nation that would need to be rebuilt almost from the ground up. The cost of building NK would be hundreds of billions or maybe over a trillion dollars. What kind of a victory would that be for the winner other than one that bankrupts?

I've always felt sorry for Japan's situation, a nice democratic country with freedom of speech and movement, interesting culture and fab cuisine, wedged in-between the 3 nastiest little dictators in the world, Kim, Xi, and troublemaker-in-chief Putin.

What is it with these pernicious little men and their childish egos to want to dominate and repress not only their own people, but terrorise and disrupt their neighbours.

Revolution will come to these 3 countries, it absolutely has to - you get one precious chance at a nice peaceful life on this planet, change has to happen to ensure that everyone can benefit from all of the basic human-rights Charter as laid down in law by the UN.

Japan have lost war and lost islands.

its fact and there is no discussion about this at all.

get it folks.Kurils are Russia.

-17 ( +6 / -23 )

While Putin's Russia are almost crashing, do sneak attack without any declaration, ignoring any kind of whatsoever treaties, and get them back. Just like Soviet and South Korea did. no other countries would complain

Kuril islands dispute between Russia and Japan

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-11664434

In 1855, Russia and Japan signed the Treaty of Shimoda, which gave Japan ownership of the four southern islands and Russia ownership of everything to the north.

Communities developed on three of the islands and by the time World War II began, there were 17,000 Japanese residents.

Russia took control of the islands at the end of the war, and by 1949 it had deported all residents to Japan.

The Northern Territories are no more Russian than Ukraine, Georgia, or any of the old Soviet era States and Countries stolen from there peoples.

Yeah sure. Funny how Japan's foreign policy always follows that war-mongering nation.

-15 ( +7 / -22 )

Russia will never return the northern territories to Japan while Putin is still the dictator of Russia. Japan should support The opposition parties in Russia instead. Japan should also increase its defense activities in Hokkaido. It will cause Putin to transfer resources from the Ukrainian border To the northern territories. Japan should also ask NATO to send ships to monitor the Russian exercise near Japan. The United States will support this effort by its Loyal Partner in Asia.

During ww2 Japan did not act according to the Geneva Convention, committed atrocities and continues to deny such, fails to educate younger generations of this history: in other words does nothing that Germany has done to truly turn the page.

And now Japan claims foul? Suddenly Russia should play fair?

It should be obvious to everyone by now that with not a single Japanese living on these islands, they will never be returned.

And why isn't Biden making a fuss over this demonstration of Putin's warmongering?

not magic or any other country’s lack of lust to over power NK bt the very simple fear of the Nuke has kept it safe from aggression n for building it back is the thing to think after concurring it not before

Invading with killing each other is a fair-play game or what? The Rule to treat POW during the war, MY EYE.

Look what Soviet had done on Japanese in Siberia AFTER

Do you even know why Soviet concluded non aggression pact with Japan?

Most analysts are of the opinion that the North Korean nuclear weapons program started in the 1950s. In December 1952, the North Korean government established the Academy of Sciences and the Atomic Energy Research Institute. The Korean War ended in 1953 through an armistice. Work on a nuclear program began after North Korea signed the founding charter of the Soviet-led, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in 1956. The move allowed the nation to send scientists and technicians to the Soviet Union for training. In January 1958, the US deployed nuclear weapons in South Korea. The following year the Soviet Union and North Korea signed an agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agreement allowed the Soviet Union to establish a nuclear research facility in Yongbyon, a town situated north of Pyongyang. During the early 1960s, the Soviet Union provided technical assistance to the country, which included the installation of an IRT-2000 nuclear research reactor. The state also sought help from Beijing after China’s first nuclear test in 1964. However, assistance to North Korea was denied.  North Korea got its missile tech originally from Egypt in the form of some Scud missiles the Egyptians shipped to North Korea.

South Korea has an advanced nuclear research establishment and it thought to be quite capable of producing nuclear weapons within 1 - 3 years after making the decision to do so.

The Soviet red army has taken those isles after 15th August 1945, the day when emperor Hiroito announcement of surrender. But the treaty was signed on paper on the date 2nd September 1945 on board US battleship Missouri. The Japanese army was notorious of violations of war ethics, thats why the Soviet army was right to proceed their actions until the last Japanese soldier/civilian combatant being stamped out!

War ethics MY FOOT!

Soviet Union was not even supposed to declare war against Japan ( which it didn't , btw), even it decided not to renew the non-aggression pact. And you have no idea what Russians have done to Japanese civilians even after 2nd of Sep 1945.
