WWII was over 75 years ago. Time to move on and not live in the past.

Kick the Russian Ambassador and staff out of Japan, and tell them not to return.

Russia is a decaying authoritarian state, led by a murderous despot. A time will come when Japan will retake her 4 illegally occupied islands - by force if necessary.

People are funny. Fighting over islands. So, ancient.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

that armament on the four northern islands, including such an exercise, is not in line with our country's position regarding the islands and is unacceptable

LOL Really??!! Then should not have started a war and joined Hitler and Mussolini in dividing the world among yourselves and none of this would have happened!!! Cause and effect!!! No parts of Japan annexed no nuclear bombs dropped on your heads, just peace and tranquility that Japan keeps calling itself, but no, you had to go and do a stupid thing like that!!! I find THAT totally unacceptable!!!

You start a war with the aim of winning territory, then be prepared for the opposite. You lost the war Japan!

I have a feeling Russia is just going to blink and ignore this. They know nothing will happen.

Japan's islands, I don't think so, simply read your history.

Japan should have a military exercise in Hokkaido.

Give us back our Hoppo Ryodo

Those four islands are of course Japanese. What is only and still open to negotiate after Russia giving them back, are the rest of the Kuril Islands up to Kamchatka and the southern part of Kurafuto / Sakhalin. And in addition, the former Soviet Union didn’t even sign the SF treaty, so that piece of paper is surely not a valid base for further bilateral decisions.

Japan should have a military exercise in Hokkaido.

To get summarily blown up by the Russians?

Even with China, Russians don't screw around.

@Septim Dynasty

Thanks for the link! This is how Japan should do things, but unfortunately does not have the balls! Cause it is a country that has tried so hard to forget it's recent history and reinvent itself in to land of tranquility!!!

Japan should have a military exercise in Hokkaido.

True. That will REALLY frighten Putin. It will even send the people of Vladivostok packing!

I believe the 4 Japanese islands of the Northern Territories should be returned - immediately.

But lets be serious here. The Japanese government has NOT made any claim for the southern part of Sakhalin. In fact I have not heard of ANY serious claims for Southern Sakhalin. That notion is pure fantasy.

Some keep repeating that Japan gave up sovereignty to these islands at the 1951 San Francisco Treaty. The USSR was not a signatory to the 1951 San Francisco Treaty. Sovereignty was never given to Russia. Because if this the US, UK consider these four islands to be Japanese territory under Russian occupation.

The islands do not belong to Japan-no dispute...

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

The problem with this analysis is that Japan disclaimed the islands,

That's not my understanding. The 1956 Soviet-Japan declaration was unclear on the matter. One interpretation was that the Soviets would return two of the islands (Habomai and Shikotan) and negotiations would continue on the other two (Kunashiri and Etorofu). The issue has never been resolved.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Usual diplomatic game. Japan may well have a de jure claim on the islands but the reality is Russia is in de facto control and has neither wish nor need to change that so will continue to ignore Japan’s protests.

The rest is theatre.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The problem with this analysis is that Japan disclaimed the islands, which means the islands are not Japanese.

And yet the current Japanese government seems not to agree with your assessment. As far as the current government is concerned the four islands in question are indeed occupied Japanese territory and this has been regularly stated by consecutive Japanese governments. I am sure they are aware of all agreements and pacts signed by previous governments, and their current position remains clear, that ownership belongs to Japan.

Japan will take no steps to give up its claims, in the hope that one day the tables will be turned and a weak Yeltsin-like premier may be willing to trade them back in exchange for something more valuable.

Russia wants Japan to recognize that the four islands were legitimately acquired following Tokyo's surrender in the war. Japan takes the view that the seizure was illegal.

Russia is stealing land from Japan!

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Japan has lodged a protest with Russia over a military exercise on two Moscow-controlled, Tokyo-claimed islands off Hokkaido, Japan's top government spokesman said Thursday.

Boycott Russia.

When a nation disclaims sovereignty over territory, it means that country no longer “owns” the territory.

Great point. This can also be applied when non-nations "claim" sovereignty over that which was never theirs in the first place.

Let's talk facts.

Russia is massive! ! !

Russians don't need any more land! ! !

Japan is an Island Nation with limited land, mostly mountain country most of it, any island matters to Japan! Land lost matters more when you have little to begin with compare to infinite land, cancer shape Russia, expanding all the way from Europe, all the way to Japan's door steps!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Russian agents running around trying to make Russia even bigger. Already the biggest country on planet Earth! ! With majority Russians not happy, trying to leave. Poor country of Europe and Asia.

For a population similar in size to Japan. How much land do you Russians need? ? ?

Russia needs to be countered the way the Mongols did in the past! ! !

After defeating Russian Princess big party with table sitting on top of all of them.

The US generously returned Okinawa to Japan, so Russia still has that option to return these islands, which still have former Japanese infrastructure, such as harbors, village communities, houses and graves.

Y'know, we could Humans could, if we had the intellect, find ways to do 'joint ventures' in situations like these where the dispute is absurd and over-exercises the national egos and narrow nationalistic mentalities which create these ridiculous non-issues, wasting of time, effort, and global respect for what seems children fighting over a toy that really 'belongs' to neither.

The US generously returned Okinawa to Japan

Um...a large part of the island has been TAKEN for our highly poisonous military bases. many of these poisonous bases are in highly populated areas of the U.S. and have TERRIBLE pollution records and offshore bases are hardly going to be better. And, if America were what it says it is, rather than "returning Okinawa, America might have looked at history and restored the RyuuKyuu management sans monarch and made Okinawa, once again, independent and FREE. That ain't how America rolls...the delusion of freedom for Americans and parasitic ownership for everyone else...and 'generously', of all of America's projected illusions, American 'generosity' means America gives a little and then takes everything we can lay our hands on including the lives of those to whom we are 'generous'. We are especially generous with distribution and use of our munitions...

The US bases on Okinawa are pristine. The land is kept up so much better than typical Okinawa neighborhoods.

No one complains about the prime real estate inhabited by JAL, ANA, and other mainland based company owned hotels. All that money gets sucked out of Okinawa and sent back to Tokyo.

They are the real occupiers.

Nippon better start doing more than protesting and take matters into their own hands. Russia and China know the cat is away with Biden at the helm.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Japan disclaimed sovereignty in the SF Peace Treaty

Japan disclaimed sovereignty over the Kurile Islands, but there was confusion of what constituted the Kurile Islands. The US State Department later stated that the Habomai Islands and Shikotan are properly part of Hokkaido and that Japan is entitled to sovereignty over them.

Personally, I think the people who live on the islands should have the major say in their future, but that is unlikely to be allowed by either Japan or Russia.
