Japan rally for return of Russia-held isles may avoid sensitive terms

That ship has long sailed away. Japan was offered two out of four years ago.

The islands belong to Japan! Russia is led by incompetent government that can only resort to being antagonistic irritants as their "foreign policy" because they have nothing left but to pick out WW2, which they lost against Japan and Emperor Hirohito! Russia is a loser country! They lack diplomacy and rely on stealing and hacking other governments to get their way! Japan is negotiating with a rogue government run by the KGB, essentially an oil oligarchy! There is no progressive understanding of reality when it comes to Russia and Her so-called politicians! Russia has sanctions against them! They support Saudi Arabia! They allow the beating of their own women! They are a bunch of oligarchs that whose confidence of their foreign policy goes up and down with the price of oil.

in the eyes of the law possession is ownership so unless Japan wants to take them back militarily or diplomatically , they remain Russian islands. I know many can't believe this, but these are the facts plain and simple. Hirohito and his mates were very keen on their illegal occupation of Korea, China and the rest of Asia. There are still plenty of people in Japan today who deny that Japan did anything wrong in that. These are the same people who refer to Russia's occupation of the four islands as "illegal".

You mean 20 million lost against fighting the Nazis while blissfully observing the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact until the US dropped the a-bombs?

The Japanese Empire lost all the territories it took in WWII and earlier by war. But the 4 islands presently occupied by Russia were not taken by war but by a negotiated Treaty with Russia in 1855. It is the Russian occupation that is illegal. And Korea was never illegally occupied, it was annexed in accordance with international laws at the time and recognized by both the US and UK.
