Everyone poses a threat to regional stability in the region except China... which is currently taking territorial actions which are a threat to regional stability.

Nobody want to attack Japan itself outside of Diaoyu/Senkaku and even that is a very remote chance of happening. If Okinawans have autonomy and control Diaoyu/Senkaku, then there is no need to revise Article 9 as there is nothing for Japan to defend against.

It's hard to say Japan and China are on a collision course any more. They are colliding. Unfortunately for China, few will willingly side with them, though they may be able to twist a few arms, because, apart from the occasional panda PR storm, they have very little to entice others and much to be wary of. Then again, I think Abe and his Nippon Kaigi comrades can quickly blow off the good will others might have for Japan, much like Bush Jr did for the US.

Of course Japan should be allowed to be in a position to defend herself against aggressive countries. Anyone who doesn't see China and North Korea as threats are ignorant. Unfortunately after an attack by either of these countries there is little comfort in saying I told you so. The best way to avoid a war is to be strong enough that another country knows that they can't beat you. It is Japans responsibility to stop relying on others for their defence and become a peace maker in the region

"Super majority" on just over 50% of available voter turnout and “Conservatives see the constitution as emasculating the nation" and how do you work that out, since the constitution has been in place since May 3, 1947, and has served Japan well, gained respect from all over the world as a peace loving nation and the Japanese have lived in peace since. Give me one or any reasons why things should change.

In this case China is spot on. Keeping a cool head is important though. The LDP would love an excuse to say "see, we need a more empowered army".

Being anti-Abe is not equivalent to being pro-Chinese. Japan's ruling party is a threat to regional stability. And so is the ruling party of China.

edojin, I was thinking the same thing. Clearly China is now wasting resources on JT and in Japan pretending to make it look like poor little China is being picked on. Maybe China thinks people outside of China can be brain washed as easily as the Chinese within its borders. Proof of that is this silly article written by Xinhua.

The region's stability has already been disturbed by China's repeated violations of Japanese territorial waters and airspace. The current move to revise the constitution in Japan is the country's response to Beijing's aggression in the East and South China Seas.

I am not a University professor for International relations nor the subject matter expert in political foreign affairs but what I do know is reality. Reality is that the Abe party is clear bent on doing away with Article 9 which will enslave the populace of Japan other than the mega rich and try to empower an imperial society that will not succeed in this nor next generation. The reality will be a defeated Japan without a constitution and US umbrella leaving Japan vulnerable and siding with China as the US continues to pull out in accordance with the unpopular 2020 plan. While Okinawans are screaming and ranting the bases are slowly pulling out, yet their mountains are being ravaged by developers who keep pumping money into the anti-base movement until it is too late. Reality is giving the Americans exactly what they have been told to do pull out and withdraw from Japan by the media and those who control it. Finally the reality is that no one can blame the politicians but the ignorance of those who voted blindly without doing their homework or any future outlook. Too bad that no one is listening to the backbone and voice of the Japan power of the small business managed and owned by ordinary citizens of Japan.

We here can criticize Abe et al all we want without having to worry of any repercussions. JT can keep these comments here without worry of any government censorship. Sealds can throw up Hitleresque effigies of Abe and not worry about being thrown into jail.

I think Japan needs to have the most robust defense that it can possibly afford and should not rely on the U.S. America will pull back. It simply cannot afford to maintain its massive military presence around the globe. Fortunately for Japan, the Asia Pacific is the last area the U.S would be willing to pull back from given the exposure of the U.S West Coast to Chinese forces, but Japan can never be sure of that and expect the worst. That is what any prudent government would do.

The days of Japan running rampant around Asia are long over. What, they are going to to take on China AND the U.S are they? Because thats what it would take. With a slowly sinking economy and rapid population decline. All of these people thinking Japan is going to go on the attack need to put down whatever there smoking and wake up to the reality of Japan and its power in 2016. The Chinese will do and say whatever they can to weaken the Japanese military position, trying to convince other Asian countries that Japan is a threat so it will give up on the SDF, reel back defense expenditure, R&D etc, to the point where Japan is of no use to anyone and China can indeed run rampant throughout Asia. Lets face it, at this point, they are the only country capable of doing so within the next couple of decades.

If Japan wants to revise its Constitution, it should be able to; China has no say in what Japan does. Beijing is just wetting itself because if China starts any trouble, Japan can come to the aid of its allies.

As others have pointed out and has said repeatedly on this forum the stability in the region has been threatened and is being threatened continuously by only one single nation： the Peoples Republic of China. They, the country, Xinhua and the clique represented, should cool it, stop fooling themselves and the nation and stop interfering in internal affairs of a sovereign nation.

The second world war ended over 70 years ago. China is the problem 'now'. Can't wait til tomorrow! The ruling from The Hague. :-) That should confirm where the problem lies.

What is the need for China to feel threatened about election result in Japan? Japan is too small for China to feel threatened? Instead of being big brother, China should behave like elder brother.

Xinhua news agency should have criticized Communist Chinese Government for invading South China Sea that has threaten peace and stability in the region.

Soon, Japan will see what this type of government can achieve once again , I guess they forgot about it . "Democracy" is a pretty word that is not practiced in Japan . Consensus over ideas is truly out of the window now. I can just smell the first conflict around the bend like hot sake in an evening at a Matsuri in Setagaya . Japan is in a world of uncertainty . The economy , natural disasters ,reconstruction , fukushima , aging nuclear plants , an aging society and no real policy towards immigration to fill up the ranks of the work force . Add to that a pinch of TPP and a tax hike ! There is a complete lack of leadership for the good of the land . It is weakening the nation. Basically #9 forbids Japan to wage war. Did the Americans impose that article or Japanese pacifists? Either way, its a free ride, a free meal, the American war machine is just expected to do it all.

This is why Trump wants to charge them more or pull the bases from Japan. Then no more hiding behind the US flag. Okinawa would be free too. Win, win scenario if it could be.

Okay fine, no Article 9 amendment. But in return, South Korea and China (the biggest complainers about such) should enact this into their own constitutions. A CSDF and a SKSDF (ROKSDF) instead.
