I know that hope springs eternal, but I wouldn't sit in an empty conference room for too long waiting for the other guys to show up.

They might be busy doing other stuff; perhaps crouched in a trench in the red dirt not far from Chernobyl . . . for instance.

I think Japan may have to settle for prohibiting Russian ships from fishing in the Japanese EEZ, Japanese fishing vessels not fishing in the Russian EEZ and be satisfied with the number of fish that can be caught in Japanese waters or imported from Canada and the US.

They just kick several russian diplomats out not long ago. I doubt Russia will take that kindly. Our government can kiss those quota goodbye.

Japan should fish for the salmon within their own EEZ. They should not be paying Russia for anything that they catch within their own EEZ. The JCG needs to protect Japan's EEZ rights by ensuring that Russia does not enter their EEZ and attempt to enforce their own rules.

Japan, stop being jerked around by Russia. They have no intention of signing a peace treaty and they have no intention of returning the four islands they stole after Japan's surrender in WWII.

Japan is in a unique position to basically cut all ties with Russia, including the asking of Russian Nationals to leave.

One side of me agrees with this sentiment. However, having diplomats on the ground talking to people they encounter every day in the stores they frequent, in the subway or on the bus, in the places they live (because most rent a place out in town somewhere) gives those diplomats a feel for any given situation that are impossible to achieve without having your own people in the country. Meetings with the host nation's foreign ministry staff, their military and political leaders can often give surprising insights into the minds of their leaders. Recently there was a meeting between US officials and a Russian General whom they meet with regularly. The General was asked about Ukraine, which obtw just happens to be where his wife was born. He got very red faced, said it was "depressing" and stalked out of the room without shaking anyone's hands or saying goodbye. Being able to meet the leaders of the host nation, look them in the eyes and speak to them are almost beyond value. That's why you try to keep your embassy open even when you are butting heads with another nation.

The whole world is. We need to do it now. Quarantine Russia from humanity until they deal with their Putin problem. It will likely be a few generations though, we're in our third generation of quarantining North Korea from the rest of us.

The fresh Australian Salmon from the cold southern Tasmanian waters are firm in texture and absolutely delicious. Better than any Salmon I was able to get while in Japan. Yet to find better.

Ever have fresh wild caught Alaska salmon? The farmed stuff never comes close. And don't make me laugh, Australians have no idea what cold water is. Tasmania has tried introducing salmon to rivers there but they do not survive.

Major problems with fish farms? Oxygen depletion, especially true in Macquarie Harbour, seals and other creatures becoming tangled in the nets and dying, and worst perhaps the amount of fish that has to be caught and turned into meal to feed the salmon greatly exceeds the amount of salmon grown. It is hard to imagine a more wasteful and environmentally degrading practice for growing food than fish farming.

Russian salmon exports to Japan are Pacific salmon species, neary if not all, Sockeye Salmon. It has nothing to do with Atlantic Salmon which today are mostly farmed. The fish are not interchangable.

When was the last time you ever heard of fresh wild caught Alaskan salmon in Australia? By the time it got there it would be less than fresh. I have never been to Alaska. So no I have never had that.

I have had fresh Australian salmon killed less than 12 hours earlier, put immediately into dry ice, transported and prepared for consumption and the fatty salmon belly is the best there is.

Alaskan wild supply is limited and unsustainable in the same way sea farming is, as that can be expanded.

The waters off southern Tasmania are damn cold and perfect for Salmon farming. Wild caught is often the best, but over fishing the supply and damage to river systems through human interference is inevitable if that was the only supply. Are you suggesting the world stops farming in a sustainable way and rely only on wild caught? They would be extinct in a decade. Farming is not perfect but it is being improved as the practice evolves. Alternatives to fish meal are already being used.
