"The Japanese government has judged it will maintain its fishing rights with Russia through negotiations despite Tokyo's imposition of sanctions, according to the officials."
Gotta play both sides. Who cares if kids are being shelled in the Ukraine? Japan already took in a whopping 20 refugees for a few months and 20% of Japanese companies have cut some ties with Russia! We still need our salmon for the kaiten sushi shops! It's our culture!

Just pay in rubbles. Japan/US dollar is over.
ukraine is not in the Pacific, not our neighbor, and all the conveyer belt sushi restaurants will go bankrupt. Since NATO sanctions, in my area, there has been big increase of lines in cheap sushi restaurants recently as families struggle to feed their kids with rising prices. My two local kaiten sushi places have around 24% salmon based plates. I checked the website, most are from Russia.

For the sake of the fishermen I hope it can get resolved, but these are the types of things Japan should have considered before falling in with US-led sanctions. Japan is not a particularly self-sufficient country, and they definitely need Russia more than the inverse.

@zoroto
japan is still technically at war with Russia. But Japanese politicians easily lie and corruption. Two faced. Of course Abe Battalion want to puff up The four Northern Islands Edo era doctrines, and of course we follow US instructions, but we need gas from Sankill 2, and Fish from Russia.

Is that really a problem? How about just only eating some more meat or more of other fish during the time of the sanctions due to Russia-Ukraine war? Like many, I also like to eat salmon, but I probably won’t die from if it is not or less available in restaurants or supermarkets for a few years. lol

Most of the kaiten salmon is Norwegian or Scottish farmed salmon. nothing to do with this
Also given that Japan and Russia are still technically at war, not sure what sanctions make any difference about.
Finally how will stopping fishing help bring the war in Ukraine to an end?

Nice joke. Russian ruble is in rubble while the USD and Japanese Yen remain much preferred currencies.
Russian politicians make Japanese politicians look like honest boy scouts in comparison.
Stop dealing with Russia and by Australian salmon, (or for DesertTortise sake) fresh wild caught Alaskan salmon.
Russia is done as a trade partner for the next few decades. Time to move on.

Japan should stop importing Sockeye salmon from Russia and completely switch over to Alaskan imports. The notion that Japan pays for salmon caught within it's own EEZ because those fish "spawned in Russia" is pretty ridiculous. But Japan agrees to this so that Russia allows Japan to take Pacific Saury (Sanma) within the Russian EEZ. But then the whole Russian EZZ is based on territpry they stole at the end of WWII.
Australian farmed salmon is Atlantic Salmon, served mostly as sushi/sashimi since the 1980s when Norwegian farmed salmon first appeared in Japan. Currently most Atlantic Salmon in Japan is imported from Norway and Chile. Atlantic Samon is not interchangable with Pacific Salmon from Russia.
Japan needs to rethink it's entire strategy in dealing with Russia.
