Russia needs to sell its gas and Japan needs suppliers. A good business trade and as to the negotiation and return of those islands it will be long long journey.

Current Russia President Vladimir Putin has power to return those 4 Islands to Japan. Japanese Government must negotiate with President Putin.

The Japanese give Putin an Akita dog. Hope that dog is not Japan's Trojan Horse to mesmerize Putin into selling out Russia. Maybe Putin just give a bone, not all the islands.

@yuriotani "Let them sit on their gas or let South Korea buy it. At least until the North cuts the pipeline."

This is by no mean a bad energy option, or else Japan will have to keep puzzling about reopen nuke power stations ? As quakes are getting more frequent & increasingly powerful, voices of concerns from the public will press the govt to think otherwise.

Scrote than Russia can expect no pipeline deal. It would be stupid to reward the Russians. Let them sit on their gas or let South Korea buy it. At least until the North cuts the pipeline.

Until now, because of the Northern Territories, Japan wasn't able to talk to Russia about matters other than energy

Not true: Japan is perfectly able, but unwilling, to talk about issues other than energy.

I don't think Japan has that much to offer Russia and shouldn't expect any progress on the islands.

Probably the best hope of retrieving the islands is through throwing a lot of cash at Putin. Building a LNG pipeline to Japan from Russia and a 20-year purchase agreement woyld likely do the trick.

In fact, that's probably what this whole arrangement is about.

Well Roten how about 2 of the islands in the 56 agreement? Why should Japan sign a Peace Treaty and get nothing? We would be better off buying from the Americans.

Japan is as likely to get the Northern Territories back as it is to get the Chinese to stop buzzing the Senkaku islands. Or to get the Koreans off of Takeshima.

Good news for Japan and Russia.
