Say, so you are building a new Volkssub, as Abbot said?

Guess they learned from Indonesia that they have to be accomodating to get the contracts, instead of like the last time on this issue where they told the Aussies they don't have the know-how to build them here. 'Tis a shame they already made their thinking on the matter rather clear beforehand.

The Atlantic is as important as the Pacific, even these days.

Japan and Australia are U.S. pacific allies and future TPP partners, so there's a good chance they will get the contract

confident it could build the subs onshore in Australia from day one, if the Australian government requests it.

Of course they're "confident", they just lost the deal in Indonesia to the Chinese.

Australia knows where the quality is. . . but after those arrogant comments made by japan about the aussies abilities, the japanese may have already spoiled the deal-

If the Australians do not have the skills, then why bother?

It would be great if the Australian Government does go along with this. We have the expertise and equipment here to do it, and the combination of that and Japanese management would be very effective.

Bad idea. Might as well hand the blue prints to China with this current PM at the helm.

Personally, I wish they'll just stick to their convictions. People do give some respect for people who stand on principle though it may hurt. Especially if a few years later they are proved right.

Now they are kind of in a worst of both worlds situation. Though they are doing nothing the French and Germans aren't doing, the timing makes it look very transparent so it probably didn't increase their chances of getting the contract very much. And in the unlikely event they do get the contract, if the local build fails, having already taken the position the Aussies can't at first and then reversing makes them look all the more culpable.
