By itself, Japan is no threat to the NORKs. Whether S. Korea could go beyond a stalemate if a fight broke out is questionable. The real threat to N. Korea is the US and the trilateral alliance. Mr. Kim should know that although he has a little RED BUTTON it doesn't mean he could ever use it. It should be labeled "PRESS TO END YOURSELF" and destroy N. Korea.

I do not. Every nation should get something. Sharing is caring. Now the real problem is that your beloved Chiang Kai-shek government in 1947 motored down to an island west of Palawan on a navy vessel gifted by the United States and planted the ROC flag (pretty cool so will include it 青天白日滿地紅) on Taiping Island. For those unfamiliar with this reference, Taiping Island is far south of China's Hainan Island and on the same latitude as Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Nationalists forces remain there to this day.

Sounds like an issue for the government of ROC. Now what will the criminal CCP be doing about its fantasy islands?

Every nation should get something

Yeah, China gets 12 nautical miles from Hainan or there abouts. Easy peasy.

There is no way North Korea will attack Japan. No way.

The Kim family have managed to stay in power in NK because, amongst other things they have managed to maintain this facade within the country that they are powerful and have the capacity to strike out at their 'enemies'. As much as anything, firing those rockets is propaganda for the domestic audience - it helps to maintain the status quo and balance of power. They spend big on hardware that looks spectacular on news broadcasts, but when it comes down to brass tax, NK forces are woefully ill equipped in the face of the weapons that surround them from Japan, South Korea and the US.

Why would the Pyongyang elites give away their privileged existence for a war?

Not going to happen.

Seems like Japan wants to get into the fight with stronger one.

North Korea is backed by China.

….

Not only China but Russia as well-fact

Seems normal to me. If you dispute something, you need to show up. The Pacific Ocean is vast and clearly international waters.

I will assume you take the identicle position with the South China Sea and that those illegal islands should all be packed up.

Japan historically has always antagonized its neighbors. Maybe the only time Japan played nice was during China's Tang dynasty and that was over 1,000 years ago.

And now Japan's besties are in North America and Europe. Go figure.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

The more real threat to Japan is China, not North Korea.

The only reason North Korea is able to continue with their insane missile program in North Korea is because China continues to support them.

The moment China stops their support, the North Korea regime is done for.

But thinking of North Korea as serious is, to be honest, quite funny. I mean, even the way this is redacted it says "North Korea threat more serious than ever", which if the threat has never actually been that serious, being more serious than ever is completely meaningless.

North Korea is flexing, and using those flexes to try to negotiate sending them more money and making more concessions, as always.

Even if the threat is real, this sounds mostly as government propaganda to get people anxious about the threat of North Korea, and get more money, and making people not feel so bad when they inevitably rise taxes again.

China regularly sends government ships to islands in dispute with Tokyo while also conducting naval drills in waters including in the Pacific, raising alarm in Japan and area nations.

Yea everyone knows the North just wants the choking sanctions (which are literally starving their people to death) gone, which only serve to provoke and create a volatile situation for normal citizens (while the military cliques and elite profit from arms sales and raising taxes to pay for them).

If they want sanctions relief, they know the price: a return to the NPT as a non-nuclear state. The US can be patient and watch them stew in the meantime.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Rodney

Aren’t we threatening them.

Japan is the weakest country among North Korea's immediate neighbors, so threatening Japan carries the least amount of risk for North Korea.

This is why North Korea's missiles always fly toward Japan, but not toward to China and the ROK.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Japan needs to learn to get along with neighbors. Grow up

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Of COURSE they said it did... elections coming up. Then it'll be less of a threat as defense spending increases amazingly... then as Kishida thinks of dissolving Parliament it'll be a threat again.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Right at the end is the real story ....

But late last year, Kishida's government approved a plan to increase defense spending to two percent of GDP by fiscal year 2027, to around 11 trillion yen ($78.7 billion).

Japan's master has requested it spends more. Japan obeys its master but has to generate fear so its population will go along. There is so much Japan could do with that cash rather than waste it on wasted weapons.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Japan shaking in their boots I understand war is hell on earth everyone should be afraid of war but since Russia visited n Korea japan has registered it as a higher threat level

What a difference 3 years makes... From unprecedented talks (first ever since the 1950s) to the now near-daily missile launches. Thanks Joe!

And how exactly does Joe get the blame? How about the great Trump who was going to get his sorted in weeks? if not days? How about Obama? hang I think I might need to go back to Bush, Clinton and Bush.

You sound like a Republican fan boy. Both parties were in power, and no matter what we did, N Korea were going to do what they wanted to. Have you forgotten the sinking of the South Korean warship? Or the shelling over the DMZ? It doesn't matter who is in power. Not to mention all the other attacks in Korea post Korean War. It really only depends on who is in power in NORTH KOREA.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

The No. Korea situation is just one more thing on the international stage that has gotten undeniably worse under the Biden administration.

He inherited a No. Korea situation, and a world situation in general, that was far more stable than what he's allowed it to deteriorate into. That's a demonstrable fact.

Hopefully the 2024 election will rectify that situation. If it's not too late, that is.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

N. Korea is an impoverished country that focuses whatever revenue it does have on it's nuclear weapons/rocket development...if it focused that revenue on helping it's own people rather than saber-rattling - then it might make sense to lift sanction - but if they're going spend all their revenue on weapons what sane argument is there for lifting sanctions and helping them?...that's like the frog being dumb enough to help to scorpion

8 ( +8 / -0 )

If I was North Korea would I make invading or harming Japan my first priority? I think id first go for South Korea and then maybe. Of course launching missiles to Japans direction is a potential danger that should be addrressed with effective plan or countermeasure. I just hope the fearmongering is not for covering some backstage money laundering.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Rubbish. They would get obliterated if they did anything. It is a desperately poor country that needs help not threats.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Yea everyone knows the North just wants the choking sanctions (which are literally starving their people to death) gone, which only serve to provoke and create a volatile situation for normal citizens (while the military cliques and elite profit from arms sales and raising taxes to pay for them).

It's common sense: treat someone well and they will repay the favor. For all his faults Trump was able to broker a situation where all NK missile tests stopped in exchange for putting a halt to US war game exercises.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

For realzies? Or isn't NK continuing to ignore Japan while its right-wing tries to make political hay out of it?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Little kim knows damn well that attacking S. Korea or Japan will be his last breath of fresh air.

why would he/she attack? They just want sanctions lifted.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

What a difference 3 years makes... From unprecedented talks (first ever since the 1950s) to the now near-daily missile launches. Thanks Joe!

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

and what will Japan do about it? Absolutely nothing! Say it again. What will Japan doing about it? Absolutely nothing. Yep! Let’s leave North Korea alone. If they attack then we can deal with it. But basically we aren’t goi g to send tanks over.not gonna bomb them. And if it does kick off, I’m not gonna expect Japan to give any more than what they’ve given Ukraine. But on saying that…. I wonder if the South Koreans might be happy if everyone else says, “ we can’t send you any ammo” but , “we send you ammo through a third party” to replenish their ammo stocks. Kind of like how South Korea has given support to Ukraine.

-9 ( +4 / -13 )

No one in the world today want war, including the N Korean. They don't have the capability, other than nuclear. Just don't blindly/echoing/parroting the American, which they feel are threatening their survival/security/etc, that is why East Asia is dangerous today, which it should not be, the American just need to go back to their half of the ocean.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

If Japan treats NK as an enemy for whatever reasons then that Made in Japan enemy will also treat Japan as an enemy.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

So I doubt very much that little kim would like to go to sleep PERMENANTLY.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Little kim knows damn well that attacking S. Korea or Japan will be his last breath of fresh air.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Here is an idea. How about lifting all Japanese sanctions (whatever they are) against NK, and then do things to help the country. That would remove any impetus to attack Japan.

-13 ( +3 / -16 )

Let’s try that again, disregard previous link:

Clearly a lot of people on here should go visit / live in North Korea.

Here’s how much they love it there.

https://youtu.be/MIEe4rhWMLw

6 ( +11 / -5 )

More fear mongering by the Japanese government and a need for the USA to sell more weapons which supports it's war machine economy.

-11 ( +7 / -18 )

Just an excuse to increase military spending you see. Few nice backhanders to mates, a cushy job somewhere after their retire from civil service or government. Oh yeah, that’s how it always works with these lunatics.

-12 ( +6 / -18 )

Of course they are, because Japan is harboring a threat to them, always takes two to dance.

Obviously what occurred during the Korean war has led to the current situation.

-15 ( +4 / -19 )

BE AT PEACE

°

Japan is falling under USA and Taiwan propaganda. Nobody will use this bomb unless attack with one. Russia is the one who would bomb north Korea if they were to use this bomb against Japan while Japan not having use the atomic bomb against them.

Unless Japan army is killing North Korean or Chinese - to help USA may be - you risk nothing. Russia is very precise on the war rule : equal method and violence. North Korea main risk is to order assassination retailiation or industrial thieving while killing the scientist who was stolen.

Japan need to stay being afraid. This tend to encourage the agresser to have the fear reflex from you, and when this is public, you do the advertising nobody do otherwise. Those bomb, that’s the only thing making sure that somebody know this little country exist on the face of earth. You give them too much power.

If you are so afraid, get the bomb and do testing near their water frontier too. Nobody will use this bomb for provocation without having Russia, or China, or USA, or France using their bombs to stop them.

Japan's government ,as normal, is trying to strike fear into its population.

After all a people living in fear is far easier to control.

-17 ( +9 / -26 )

Why is it not possible that nuclear armed US subs not lurking in waters near NK? Just in case he has some stupid idea.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Of course it is; do you think the US would bring a nuclear submarine around (and surface, at port)

simply for a "Port of Call" ? No.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Some info on the photo. It's the Hwsong-18 solid fuel three stage ICBM.

The black and white "chess board" color scheme on it is designed to allow observers to see how much the rockets are rolling during lift off and assisting other visual measurements.

The Germans did it with the A4/V2, NASA does it now and everyone does it in some way.

Aren’t we threatening them.
