Freedom of navigation.

Is that really belong to Russia, not Wagner?
Marc Lowe
Well, any idiot should know that when a ship passes between two countries that are close together, it will naturally be close to them. Russia is doing nothing wrong here. Japan is just uppity because they know Russia will never give back the northern islands, nor should they. The JSDF says their ships are monitoring the Russian ships, but in alternative semantics this means Japan is egging Russia on, ;probably because they know Russia's hands are full in Europe.

They're attempting to show the US that they are still a naval presence in the Pacific despite their obvious military and naval weakness in the European theater. Just a bit of sword-waving and showboating.

russia is desperate to demonstrate its relevance to China, it has no economy worth speaking of save resource extraction and China was never its major customer, so it is reduced to parading its questionable military hardware and as most of its land and air forces are busy under performing in Ukraine all that’s left is the rump of their Far East fleet. All fairly meaningless as the russian fleet wouldn’t be much of a threat to Taiwan let alone Japan!

Well Its the Safest Place for Russian Naval Forces If They Try doing freedom of Navigation in their own place Ukraine will Just make Those Frigates How To The Fishes By Sinking Them So Japanese N Taiwanese Waters R their Safest Place
Rodney
Freedom of navigation, except Russia and China are friends and USA/ nato are pushing for war with China.
theResident
Bollox Rodney. And you know it.
EFD
Send rescue assets to the area. They are just as likely to sink as they are to intimidate anyone.

Well said.

Russian ship sails in international waters. Just like every navy in the world
Where is the story about US, UK, Chinese, and literally ALL navies in the world?
ClippetyClop
I'm sure there is somewhere. It's just hard to find amongst all the invading, murdering, stealing, looting, raping etc.
Maybe you can find us something nice that Russia is doing in the world?
kurisupisu
Russian warships in international waters….yawn!
ishel
Remember Tsushima :P
ian
This all the news report related to Russia?
Why not report about the war?
Jim
International waters… no country has the right to stop another from navigating the international waters. It’s part of the international maritime laws.
Peter Neil
If they were undetected, that would be a story.
But how would we know that we didn't detect them?
it's all too complicated.
Sven Asai
How lame, only spotting them afterwards when they’re already there. What are those expensive supercomputers for? Forecasting their probable course with some AI models and then ‘forget’ already in advance the one or other underwater drone or mine nearby by ‘accident’ or so, such that they cannot other than ‘incidentally’ run into. That’s how to handle it, preventing even quickly from next countless attempts or threatenings once and for all.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Things that are stolen should be given back. You think Japan will just forget?
No, monitoring is monitoring. You don't think China and Russia tail US ships when they are doing freedom of navigation?
TaiwanIsNotChina
How does Russia and China being friends not mean their actions are pushing for war as well?
Pacificpilot
A closer inspection would have revealed that half the crew was made up of foreign nationals because the Russian Navy is depleted. Also, a significant portion of the munitions and missiles aboard have been diverted to the Black Sea fleet.
theFu
Exactly. As long as they follow international requirements, it is fine. It is prudent for Taiwan and Japan to monitor them as well. Just like it is prudent for China to monitor when Japanese/Australian/US/NZ/French/UK warships are located.
WA4TKG
Sink them, just for target practice.
Or do something like the North Koreans would and plead ignorance
voiceofokinawa
Seems that’s a pickoff attempt by Russia to check NATO allies to increment military assistance and involvement in Ukraine. The Ukrainian war is thus not a local conflict but a global one, dangerously leading to a third world war.
voiceofokinawa
Exactly one year ago, the same thing happened. According to Jul 2, 2022 Kyodo News, three Russian warships passed between Japan's westernmost islands of Yonaguni and Iriomote. That was really a shocking piece of news, for the waters between Yonaguni and Iriomote are considered not international waters. ’
stormcrow
It makes sense. After all, the Chinese are providing Russia money and other things in its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine.
quercetum
This is great news. Shows these QUAD AUKUS people two can play the game.
Russia is different from China. China and Japan won’t get involved in the Russia Ukraine War but I have no doubt Russia will take their angle on China’s side with a military conflict involving Taiwan and Japan.
Justin F. Kayce
Well any idiot would know that “between Miyako and Okinawa islands” is not two countries but within the boundaries of a single prefecture of one country ummm that country being Japan.
