what do they do when a country summons an ambassador anyway? They shake hands, state the facts and have coffee? Does the ambassador being summoned hang their head in shame, or counter with a "yeh, but..." and fight back with whatever absurd reasoning they might have?

Diplomatically speaking... summoning an ambassador is a BIG issue.

Not long ago Japan summoned Chinese envoy to logge protects over and over on Chinese ships' intrution in disputed water. Now, what happens, any more protest ? (Japanese Government has grown numb nowadays for the same incursion wihtout any fuss.)

For the US, there is no good guys in territorial dispute. Evidently, Japan is not, by any means a victim here either.

Japan and China should find a way to let the soreness go and focus on constructive and postive cooperationst instead bickering each other for a dead end.

More than once we had Soviet trawlers cutting in front of our sub trying to cause an international incident. If we would have hit them they would have blamed us and claimed it was our fault even though they were the ones who cut in front of us.

It will be China's for failing to cooperate to avoid the problem. Japan has repeatedly called for a military hotline of communication so that accidents can be avoided. Yet China has continued to refuse. It's rather obvious that they are deliberately "trying" to create an incident.

OK our F15s are doing their job very well. Our government is doing their job very well. But we visit Chinese restaurant run by a Chinese family and enjoy very good food here in Japan, and go to conbini and see nice Chinese stundents working there. We are doing just fine here we have no problem with Chinese people, I just hope CCP backs off.

You are absolutely right. The Chinese are the new face to an old joke. Eventually one of these two countries will shoot at or destroy the other's plane. and I hope when that happens, The world will withdraw trade, support and negotiations with the Chinese. T Hey are so right wing they are falling off the edge.

In my opinion, Beijing playing "TURKEY" in the skies. China does not like Japan and Australia are setting up the military alliance. If China does not like this, then stop being a bully.

Perhaps if the Japanese planes did not fly in the Chinese zone it wouldn't have happened, and perhaps if they had not insisted on buying islands that are disputed the new Chinese zone would not have happened. What's "regwettable" is that both nations' leaders are children with heavy firepower at their disposal when the mud-pie fight starts.

What is the explanation on this issue by the Chinese government? One thing true is that that was a quite dangerous action. That could trigger something worse between Japan and China if something had happened. I don't know why the Chinese government takes such actions which make them more and more isolated. I'm sure these actions won't be seen positively by other countries.

The “assertiveness” presented by today’s China is immature. China can never attain real assertiveness by simply drawing a line between “China” and “The West”. Assertiveness is possible only if China acknowledge the existence of both itself and “The West” as equal members of this world without putting up any “Other”. Assertiveness is possible only if China is liberal and open-minded enough to appreciate, criticize and selectively apply cultural, legal and political values from abroad. China would be in a better position to utilize its phenomenal momentum to participate creatively in every aspect of global governance.

World: thanks for the link. I'm sure that if the public was continuously shown the truth, you would find that both Japan & China are guilty of playing this dangerous cat & mouse game. No matter who you believe is in the right, none of this is worth going to war over. The disputed territory is much smaller that what we would loose if both sides started fighting. Do people actually believe that Japan & China could have a war and not suffer a tremendous lose of life and land? I support neither countries actions on this one, there will be no solution that comes from having a war.
