Why was he given 6 days, should have been the same 48 hours given to Motoki.

russia never intended the negotiations to go anywhere save they could extract money and concessions from Japan, so nothing real has been lost in their breaking off negotiations.

Japan needs to start sending warships around the northern islands on training exercises.

Learn some history. The Russians have been living in the Donbass regions for generations. Much of the population in the Donbass is also Russian speaking Ukrainian.

Here's some history for you. There are no Russian majorities except in very small parts of Donbass - and even there, there's no way 99% voted for Russian citizenship. Crimea is another story, so perhaps you should stick to that.

@Rodney : As a declared diplomat. He has immunity and should not have been held any longer than to confirm as such.

Russia breaking all rules. Have you signed up to fight yet?

Great. Throw one "consul" out of northern Japan...but also sign brand new long-term supply contracts with Russian LNG exporters in the Sakhalin 2 development project! Providing billions and billions of dollars to Russia's war machine.

"In early August (2022), the Russian government gave Sakhalin-2 minority foreign investors – Shell, and Japan’s Mitsui & Co and Mitsubishi – one month to claim their stakes in a new entity that will replace the existing project. Shell has confirmed it is looking at ways to exit the project. The Japanese companies are expected to keep their stakes, Japan’s Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda has said..."

And they did! Brand new contract. Now you tell me, which one of the actions above has more of an impact on Russia's thinking? The publicized expulsion of some non-entity running a third-tier consulship? Or a new, fat gas contract with Japanese technical assistance and hard cash infusions?

Finally Japan is starting to grow a pair. I guess enough time has passed.

If Tatsunori Motoki was a spy, he is lucky to be back home and not a Russian prison in the Urals for ten years.

This. Of course Japan would deny the spying. Perhaps Mr. Motoki was indeed caught with his pants down. Stranger things have happened.

But now they throw out some anonymous Russian Consul based in Hokkaido? I guess if Motoki had been based in St. Petersburg, then the Japanese would have thrown out an Osaka based Russian diplomat?

Ukraine had been attacking the Donbass for the last 8 years with the loss of more than 14,000 peopl's lives. Putin has finally put a stop to it.

> yup, and now he’s got many times that number in Russian combat casualties. Bra.Vo.

Motoki - For spying maybe?

Good. This should have happened ages ago - and Japan should expel more than one diplomat.

The less dealings the free, democratic world have with fascist Russia, the better. Cut them off as much as possible.

Japan needs to do more than expel Russian Consul over Ukraine. Japan has to help Ukraine as the U.S. does by sending weapons and aid.

ok and so what now?

new consul will replace this guy anytime soon.

Last week, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned Russia's annexation of parts of Ukraine and said Japan plans to impose more sanctions against Moscow.

Japan never does anything really. Just talk and have meetings for years. Never doing anything outside of Japan.

No worries, Japan is not a friendly nation to Russia, both countries even didn't have a peace treaty since WW2. Come to China, the Chinese people welcomes Russians very much!
