National news are trying to portray Abe and LDP Govt as relevant and extremely important to NK issue by creating headlines of non-news steps. I don’t think anyone in the world cares about what Japan wants or thinks of current US, SK and NK diplomatic actions in recent times. Kim seems to be playing diplomacy quite well in not only sidelining Abe and Japan, but portraying them as war mongers as well, if Abe and LDP kept their so called “maximum pressure” drama running.

Japan to keep maximum pressure on N Korea ahead of Trump-Kim summit

The title, and let's not forget the meeting is still not 100%, (Let's hook in the reader!)

Japan plans to maintain maximum pressure on North Korea in close coordination with the United States

Ahh, the "truth", ....

Recently I have heard about "4 party" talks to resolve this North Korean Nuclear issue. Those four being; the US, Korea, North Korea and South Korea. No mention of Japan, and I think this has Abe really scared. IF he is not at the big boy's table how can he continue to bring up the abducted Japanese, his only "Trump" card!

Excellent move by PM Abe. If NK comes to the Summit, and promises to resolve the abductees issue, then Japan is delighted to become big business partner. If Trump-Kim Summit is success, then plans will be made for a huge PM Abe-Kim-San Summit 1-2 days later. If it happens, it will be amazing.

Its a perfect scene of a hunting movie where a dog is barking louder to the owner.

There is no need to hurry. The biggest challenge is for the international community to jointly prevent North Korea from evading sanctions," Kono told reporters

No, it isn't. It's for the sensible adults to prevent the warmongering nutters in the White House (Bolton, Pence etc) from starting WW3 in North East Asia.

I think members of the government get a stamp on their card every time they talk about "maximum pressure", and after ten times they get a 500 yen reduction at the Diet's Yoshinoya.

Brilliant analysis! Agree 100%.

True. But Alfie, we all know that Japan is just relying on the US to do all its fighting and negociation for it. That's why Kono can make statements like that.

I think members of the government get a stamp on their card every time they talk about "maximum pressure", and after ten times they get a 500 yen reduction at the Diet's Yoshinoya.

LOL. Brilliant!

US, Korea, North Korea and South Korea......Lol, don't you mean China?

And by the way, it's "6 party talks" when it comes to NK and the nuclear issues!

Japan has been like a little chihuahua that barks endlessly and then runs out from behind its master's feet to bite the milkman's ankle while he's having a quiet conversation at the front door.

"This is going to be an opportunity that Japan, which has the abduction issue, should never lose,"

So by that same logic, it would not be inappropriate for Korea (both North and South) to continue to request their apologies over the comfort women and all the abductions and slavery that Japan imposed on them at the time, right?

Or not? After all, it was a long time ago and under different leadership, right?

2 ( +14 / -12 )

How is Japan in any way relevant to the upcoming talks?

Oh...yes, the abductees. Something that should have been sorted decades ago.

And something that in all honesty...doesn't want sorted.

Nothing else to add or say if they issue gets put to bed.

And by the way, it's "6 party talks" when it comes to NK and the nuclear issues!

It was. I much prefer the idea of the four party talks though.

shinzo has absolutely no relevance to these talks, as hard as he might try. Time for a hamburger and a round of golf, last thing he wants is to be home with mum having to answer questions about his corruption.

Japan to keep maximum pressure on N Korea ahead of Trump-Kim summit

What pressure?

The best thing Japan can do right now is nothing

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Yeah good luck with that...

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Yubaru, thanks for the correction. Yes I meant China, and yes, in the past they were always talking about 6 party talks, but as I mentioned I've heard 4 party, not sure why they are thinking of cutting out Russia, but I can see why they would not want Japan in any talks as they will only gum up the works with the abductees issue.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Hahaha! Japan keeping "maximum pressure" means they're going to keep running around and asking to be part of the conversation, and when rejected ask others to relay their questions.

First sentence of the article: "Japan plans to maintain maximum pressure on North Korea in close coordination with the United States to make Pyongyang abandon its nuclear weapons and missile programs, amid reviving prospects for a U.S.-North Korea summit in June, government officials said Sunday."

Second sentence of the article: "The government scrambled to

gather information to help it understand what was behind U.S. President Donald

Trump's recent back and forth on the potential summit with North Korean leader

Kim Jong Un in Singapore."

The reality: The Abe government does not know what is going on.

Further more, Japan is being sidelined from whatever negotiations will ensue

between the U.S. and both Koreas. Thus, the Abe crew is doing its very best to

look busy. This generates a lot of paper and a lot of rhetoric. It makes

personnel bleary from overtime. It does absolutely nothing worthwhile.

Note that Japan only planning to "maintain maximum

pressure," meaning it's not doing so at present." And likely the

"maximum pressure" will be just more empty rhetoric.

Oh yes, Abe says he will show unity with Trump. Has anyone fallen

out of her or his chair yet?

I've heard 4 party, not sure why they are thinking of cutting out Russia, but I can see why they would not want Japan in any talks as they will only gum up the works with the abductees issue.

Besides the abduction issue, Japan does have very real security concerns with regards to NK. North Korea has a history or launching missiles that either fly over the country, or land in the Japanese EEC zones in the waters around Japan.

Not to mention the "boat" people that rather often wash up onto Japanese shores or the fishermen who poach in Japanese waters.

Yeah Japan SHOULD be included, but they need to set a better agenda on their own without connecting it to the US all the time!

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has been seeking to build a personal rapport with Trump, is expected to show unity with the U.S. president.

Good luck with that. Trump is well known for throwing anyone under the bus when it suits his purpose. The sole way to "build a personal rapport" with him is to be one of his three children (Tiffany doesn't count - and neither do his wives. Even Jared must take care.)

That alternative reality world you inhabit seems like to be an amazing place indeed.

Brilliant mate!

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

This whole summit smacks of Historical repetition, all that's missing is the end result of Trump Brandishing a piece of paper and saying "peace in our time". Don't be fooled, Japan has every right to be worried!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Japan should never be included until they stop making it a priority to derail talks in order to keep scoring political points through fear mongering.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

JAPAN has no nukes they are irreverent to these talks and have no say in it. Sad that I had to say it but sorry Japan but those in power have nukes the rest just grovel as best they can. Same for the people in the room with guns vs the people in the room with pencils.

This should have all of Japan scared because they don't have the power to do anything and the USA is slowly disintegration into a buffoon country run by even bigger buffoons. That in it self should scare Japan ability to even govern it self in the future.

For now that is true but I would say their long strategy is to build up their military and nuclear ability if they want to even survive. Time is not on their side when it comes to loosing what little power they have as the USA declines as a power.
