Only Taiwan should be admitted to this exclusive club. Not the UK (not in the region) or SK. Certainly not the PRC.

Making the TPP too big will dilute the massive economic benefits the existing members will gain from free trade, plus lead to many more years of negotiations.

Let's see what the other TPP countries say about SK's entry. Precisely who will be opposed? If it is Japan only, it would be diplomatic suicide to exercise its veto.

Japan's top government spokesman said Tuesday it is too early to comment on the prospect of South Korea joining the 11-member Trans-Pacific Partnership until it becomes clear whether the country can fully meet the high standards of the free trade pact.

"High standards" meaning if a country can give up democratic and legislative oversight of its environmental and labor laws to the whims of multinational conglomerates.

Apparently the TPP has no standards for genocide, human bondage, the protection of wildlife soon to be extinct and crimes against humanity. That’s why China feels it is a good candidate for membership.

South Korea should not be allowed to join until relations with Japan improves!

You want to join TPP to benefit economically?? Then Join Quad Alliance too to balance China, and prevent a big war from happening in our backyard which your part of it.

Japan is already taking more responsibility in East Asia, joined Quad Alliace, making statements in support and defense of Taiwan. Protecting Water lanes S. Korea uses too for its own economy.

Japan has to be there to fight Russia and China next to America, while S. Korea won't even boycott the Winter Olympics in 2022. Moon said he won't join, wants to be on good terms with China. Russia and N. Korea.

TPP is only for a economy which understands and respects International law and International promise

Are you enlisted? If not, enlist as soon as you can, preferrably the U.S. military, where you can fight as much as you wish for America. And I hope Japan will fight only if directly attacked, for no other reason.

Sure, let South Korea into TTP. It has a robust economy and its universities are superior to Japanese universities--including Todai.

From an Australian perspective there would be no objections to South Korea, UK or Taiwan joining the TPP.

China will not be allowed to join until it can keep the free trade agreement it signed with Australia in 2014, as it is currently not abiding by that agreement. China uses trade to coerce and as long as it does it will not gain membership to TPP. Nor should it. Canada will also have it's own objections to Chinese membership in the TPP.

It’s a regulated trade pact, not a free trade pact.

If South Korea joins the TPP, it is unlikely that it will abide by the rules of the TPP, as it has no qualms about disrespecting the Japan-Korea Basic Treaty and the Japan-Korea Agreement, which have already been resolved. Recently, it officially signed the decarbonization statement at COP26 with no intention of abiding by it. Countries other than Korea signed the statement while demanding amendments to the statement in order to take responsibility for the statement. It would be hard to find a country more irresponsible than Korea in recent years.

I disagree. Any breaking of the TTP rules is against all members. South Korea has not shown any inclination to break any treaties that relate to International trade. South Korea and Japan agreements and disagreements based around WWII are not going to effect how it deals with Canada and Chile and Australia and the others of the TPP including Japan.

This trade agreement has nothing to do with WWII, reparations or treatment of people during that conflict. I would expect all participants will have no reason to fail to observe the rules of the TPP.

Of course if China was to be admitted, it has a history of breaking trade pacts rules to use coercion against other nations to try to get its way.

Regardless of the field, it is natural that a country that does not keep its promises and international rules is not to be trusted. The promises that Korea has failed to keep so far include the Japan-Korea Fisheries Agreement, trade controls, and many other items. Japan's tightening of export controls on semiconductors was also a result of Korea's failure to keep its promises to Japan, leaving sloppy controls in place and not holding talks to improve them. More than once, Korea has failed to follow the rules.

So, Japan will block South Korean entry.

Australia, Canada, Vietnam will block China's entry.

China will pay off at least one member to veto Taiwan's entry.

That only leaves the UK application to consider.
