The ministry pointed to the Go To campaigns, under which the government covers part of the costs for domestic travel and dining out to encourage consumption and boost virus-hit industries, as a contributing factor.

So the Finance Ministry is telling everyone that government policies are working.

Is this news?

The situation is my region is "severe" or "horrendous". Pick whichever word you want.

The national govt has done zilch in the last 50 years to strengthen regional economies and structures after realizing Japan's rural depopulation problem.

Everything has been moved to Tokyo. Period.

Can't expect these much neglected outer regions to have much of an ability to rebound from this situation.
