I am more curious what the response was when he made that call. What did the opposite side say?

Now he’s fulfilled his obligation.

Japan is making itself a target by mentioning Taiwan and Hong Kong which China considers "internal matters", while the rest of the world ignores such a rubbish position and often comments anyway.
The free are free to have opinions and to state them. Well done Japan for not being cowed into silence.
If Taiwan chooses to become part of China freely then so be it and good luck to all. If Taiwan chooses to remain a functioning independent state then the world will be fine with that also.
China needs to learn respect for others if it wants any for itself.

Fix your own backyard first instead of telling others what to do. You're not a superpower Japan.

I love that - call for peace between China and Taiwan - well said

For once, I agree. A lot better than America which is finding excuses to start another war. No, China does not have military bases all over the world.

Yea but far moreso than your South Korea.

Taiwan is very much Japan "backyard". A Chinese conquest of Taiwan would lead very quickly to a Chinese conquest of Okinawa, which China says is "Japanese occupied" and should be a tributary state of China like the old days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The way China has treated Hong Kong is related in that it is a huge deterrent to Taiwan wanting to have anything to do with China, feeding a growing independence movement that could lead to a war of conquest by China against Taiwan. Japan has every reason to want to prevent this from happening.

Under this particular dictator, this is a new kind of China, and I suppose that's what the primary danger is of dictatorships. Some dictators might be able to behave like a kind and just king, whereas other dictators might behave like Stalin or Hitler. Let's hope and pray that Xi is of the former and not the latter.
