I am amazed russia can find enough troops to hold exercises at all!

The islands are legally Japanese, temporarily and illegally occupied by russia.

Perhaps Japan should start holding exercises around northern Hokkaido and the islands. Highlight the numerical and technological superiority of the Japanese naval forces to the ex-soviet rust buckets russia can scrape together in the East.

Should it come to a conflict, russia would have as little success holding on to them as they had holding Snake Island, and Japan has vastly better naval and air forces than Ukraine could muster.

Oh yes they can, because Stalin originally made a pact with Hitler, and was his ally. The Russians only fought the Nazis as they were double crossed, and attacked by the Nazis. There is no Russian glory in their battle with the Nazis. It was pure self defence. Check your history.

Given that the Russian military drills near the Ukraine border were really the beginning of an invasion, Japan should begin its own military build up in the same area. The world knows the Russians are liars. Despite the Putin bots that infest these pages, and spew Kremlin propaganda.

Now come on... Japan does give "stern looks" (well, when others aren't looking). And besides, we know they won't do anything because they still want in on Russia's gas projects, and still conduct more than 70% of the business they had with Russia pre-war in Ukraine.

They belong to Russia, so Russia can do as it pleases with and around them. Hell, Japan is joining military exercises around Korea, the Philippines, and more. Doesn't seem to concerned in those examples of who is doing what where.

Cry about these war games but condone as well as join in on others...par for the course...

Funny how Japan is not only complaining but actively and aggressively attacking Russia with sanctions and support for a Neo-Nazi country like Ukraine. It seems Japan’s support for Nazis was a lesson not learned.

kishida should realize that like Ukraine, Japan is not a member of the EU or NATO. Poking a stick in the eye of the worlds largest, nuclear armed country is not recommended.

Why? That's Russia's sovereign territory and Russia may do what it wishes on its own territory.

Do you ask Russia not to do military drills, but you support against Russia the sanctions and childish interventionist political actions of the US??..

So Russia will never listen to you and you will never get your northern territories back if you keep playing lapdog, have your own self determination..
