Biden apology tour express finally making its way over to Tokyo!

Someone finally realized the strategic importance of Japan to security in Asia?

Here's hoping a fair resolution can be reached that benefits both countries. I don't expect either side to be "happy" with the results, but I've heard that is what makes for good, fair, agreements - when both sides are equally unhappy.

I rhink that the USA and other countries should put a 778% tariff on Japanese and start negotiations from there.

Trump ordered the tariffs, 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum, in March 2018, asserting they would protect U.S. jobs and national security.

Not so sure on job security, but on national security, Trump was right on the money.

Hope Joe doesn't throw in the towel on this one too.

They're far enough apart in that photo to remove those masks. What are they afraid of? Revealing their actual thoughts through facial expressions? The phrase, 'face-to-face negotiations' just took a dive into irrelevancy.

Are you serious? Those tariffs did absolutely nothing to improve the security of the US. All they accomplished was to raise prices to consumers and in some cases led to manufacturers discontinuing certain premium products that were still made of aluminum or steel instead of plastic. Tariffs always impose a deadweight loss on an economy. Always in every case. Please learn some very basic macroeconomics.

Trump was quite right. Japan puts 778% tariffs on rice in the grounds national security. (disguised as culture). Trump had the brains to realise that Japan is just taking the p***.

Here is the tariff schedule from the Japanese government. Rice has a 25% tariff. Scroll down a bit in the chart to find rice.

In any event, imposing a tariff on a product only hurts the nation imposing the tariff as the consumers end up paying the full cost of the tariff. Since it acts to raise prices, fewer consumers can afford to buy and those who do buy some, buy less. The consumption lost due to the higher price represents a deadweight loss to the economy. This is why us economists almost universally opposed tariffs.
