According to this report, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said,

"When countries take actions that run counter to the United States' interests or that threaten our partners and allies, we will not let those challenges go unanswered." Sounds natural.

Note, however, that Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC could have said exactly the same thing:

"When countries take actions that run counter to China's interests or that threaten our partners and allies, we will not let those challenges go unanswered."

What would come of such jingoistic bickering?   it would only boil down to arms confrontation. Fruitless and nonsense.

A maxim in Okinawa says, "One can see Kerama (offshore islands lying west of Naha) but he can't see his own eyelashes."  Indeed, you can't see what is right under your nose.

There are very many cases around us that this maxim aptly describes. For example, like former U.S. President Donald Trump, people often point their finger at Wuhan Institute of Virology for the leak of the novel coronavirus and demand for a thorough investigation of it. But the USAMRIID at Fort Detrick in Maryland, U.S.A., is not at all inferior to Wuhan for a possible leak.

In China, in fact, 5 million people have signed a petition asking WHO to investigate Fort Detrick.
