The ship based system can also defend against incoming missiles but torpedoes and mines are additional threats. Being out on the water the range is also slightly reduced for incoming ordinance. A submarine could get in close enough to easily torpedo or launch frog men to attach mines to the hull. It has been done before.

Do you really think North Korea or China is able to get into coastal Japanese waters and lay mines? In exercises subs often have to ask the destroyers and frigates to turn off their "Masker" bubble curtain systems and "Prairie" propeller noise reduction equipment so they can find them while submerged. With Prairie and Masker working surface ships are essentially inaudible to submarines.

From experience, the JMSDF is the best anti-submarine warfare navy in the world, equal in every respect to the US Navy. Woe to the Chinese or Nork sub that tries to get inside Japanese waters to lay mines or attack their Aegis ship.

Disagree, as ships are much more vulnerable than a land based solution. In addition, a ship is always moving or shaking, what will falsify the missile’s course significantly. Some meters error when moving leads to several hundreds or kilometers of missing calculated targets. Can be corrected, of course, but has anybody the time for that at incoming atomic bombs within a few minutes? No, that’s for sure. You run for your life not for a computer to correct the flight parameters.

Where do you come up with this stuff? It is completely untrue. An SM-3 launched from a ship at sea found and hit the fuel tank of a satellite in space. SM-3s have an over 80% hit rate against subscale ballistic missile targets. Subscale means they are smaller than a real ballistic missile warhead. They have been able to hit targets surrounded by decoys, rejecting the decoys to hit the desired warhead target. The US Navy has been shooting missiles at other missiles from sea skimming supersonic cruise missile surrogates like GQM-163 and MIM-8 to ballistic missile targets and aircraft targets from ships for several decades now. The weapons are very accurate.

"One large ship, then one large torpedo or anti-ship missile - end of missile defence!"

What about land based ones?

Are they invulnerable, incapable of attack of any sort?

Some reasoning here!

Ships can be targeted by other ships, missiles, torpedoes, mines, aircraft, Submarines.

Land based can be targeted by ship launched missiles if they get close enough.

Aircraft launched missiles if they get close enough.

Ballistic missiles.

The "anti missile" system can defend against incoming missiles.

The ship based system can also defend against incoming missiles but torpedoes and mines are additional threats. Being out on the water the range is also slightly reduced for incoming ordinance. A submarine could get in close enough to easily torpedo or launch frog men to attach mines to the hull. It has been done before.

The best way to counter missile threats posed by North Korea would be to nurture friendly relations with them instead of antagonizing them at every opportunity.

Isn't it North Korea who is doing the antagonizing at every opportunity with threats of nuclear destruction and missiles? Or is it in your view Japan has "antagonized" North Korea (and China) by merely existing as a democratic and capitalistic country? Or maybe Japan should become a vassal state under China and then Japan won't be "antagonizing" them any longer?

What exactly has Japan done to antagonize North Korea?

Does not look like they thought this through at all. Just scrabble from one bad idea to another, experts doubt it's feasible. But the ministry are going for a decision in record time. Mitsubishi Heavy industry might be putting pressure on for another tax payer white elephant. What is the minister of defence thinking?...oh.

Exactly what "experts" claim it isn't feasible? Aegis is on over 80 ships in the US Navy along with ships from Norway, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Australia and soon Canada.

Japan can print a lot of monies, very capable govt.

Aegis ashore would be more reliable at a lower cost. Cancelling it because IF it were to be used to defend the home islands, some residents MIGHT, have a booster fall on their property (while saving countless thousands) shows just how out of whack Japan’s National Security priorities are.

Not really. Standard US Army doctrine calls for air defense missiles to be single stage for this very same reason. That is why the US Army doesn't often use air defense missiles developed by the US Navy, most of which have two or three stages. THAAD, Patriot in all its versions, Hawk, Roland, SLAMRAAM, Chaparral, etc are all single stage missiles. Only Nike used a booster.

One large ship, then one large torpedo or anti-ship missile - end of missile defence!

Ships move around and can be very hard to find. Their internal and propeller noises can be essentially eliminated with systems called Masker (bubble curtain over the ships hull)and Prairie (propeller bubbler that mutes cavitation noises). Land sites do not move and can be targeted precisely by satellite at an enemies leisure.

At least the supersonic missile won’t take out the surrounding city as well.

Not promising at all. This concept is not well thought out. Easily compromised, by sea, land, air, or internally. Tough decisions have to be made and the sooner the better...

meanwhile, the Government is eyeing the setting up of an advisory committee of experts to advise as to the desirability of establishing a workgroup to plan the development of rapid-response decision-making in Government's planning off military readiness.
