South Koreans are complaining about this when they indoctrinate their people to hate Japan from primary school.

Can we just make the whole country a UNESCO site and save some time?

@samit

From your link

"This Japan-led system looms over the Sado nomination. The World Heritage registry, which the Sado gold mine is up for, is separate from the Memory of the World program. The former does not require a consensus among the relevant countries. Still, if Japan nominates the Sado site for inclusion in defiance of South Korea's opposition, it could invite claims of a double standard."

Memory needs consensus when memories themselves are being disputed.

What's the point? Thanks to Japan's demands, no nomination opposed by another country can be listed on UNESCO world heritage list.

Actually the rule was changed only to "World Memory (memorial heritage)", not to "World Heritage"

If you know the difference

And Japanese indoctrinate their people with lies about WWII and that they're victims from primary school.

To copy-paste what I wrote in another article: If you want to talk about education, there were children in South Korea who drew pictures of Japan being nuked with crayons that were posted in a public train station. Another time, Gyeonggi district proposed putting stickers on devices in all classrooms that said, "This device was made by a war criminal."

Korean indoctrination is nowhere near Japan’s level.

Yep... a clear indication of how much Japan wants to improve relations with its neighbors (not)

Not like South Korea cares about improving relations with Japan. Or with the US, judging by the time they threatened to pull out of GSOMIA and lied about telling the US first.

Japan is obsessed with nominating itself for everything. Fifty years from now (or maybe even less), I could see them putting up the Fukushima nuclear plants for nomination. Just buy UNESCO outright already!

You are not making any sense. What Japan would nominate Fukushima nuclear plants for?

Like what lies?

That the reason for invading neighboring Asian countries was to protect them from Western powers. They called it the Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. We all know that it was lie and the real reason was pure imperialism and to steal territory and natural resources. That there was no such thing as Unit-731 that conducted disgusting medical experiments on POWs in Manchuria. Ever heard of Nazi doctor Dr. Mengele? Or you do know that Japan allied with Nazi Germany. I could go on and you could actually educate yourself instead of pushing Japanese political propaganda.

There's hardly any need for any special "indoctrination" when Japan itself keeps providing reasons for dislike

Precisely

Sanae Takaichi, policy chief of the LDP, said in the session, "This is a situation that relates to the state's honor..."

What is honourable about a state using forced labour?

Japan is already in trouble with UNESCO over the Hashima coal mine.

The UNESCOcommittee passed a unanimous resolution criticizing the inadequate explanation about workers brought from the Korean Peninsula to work at the Hashima Coal Mine on a tiny island off the coast of Nagasaki city, The report by the World Heritage Center pointed out that the displays about Hashima Coal Mine give the impression that the workers were not forcibly brought there. It concluded that there was no display that reported what the victims had to endure.

A Vietnamese trainee's physical abuse is in the news and when asked why these incidents occur the Justice Minister said, "We believe it's rooted in a lack of human rights awareness... and there's an element of racism as well."

Yet the same government wants Kinzan to be a UNESCO site when thousands of Korean and Chinese laborers, Japanese felons and political dissidents underwent forced labour and all kinds of abuse resulting in their undocumented deaths.

Oh the irony....

The lack of human rights awareness starts in the government.

While conservative lawmakers in Japan are pressing the government to nominate the site, a rule that Japan itself asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to introduce several years ago could turn out to be the biggest obstacle.

Japan previously led an effort to create a system in which UNESCO does not register sites nominated under a separate program, UNESCO's Memory of the World, if the registration is opposed by another member state.

@kennyG

it could invite claims of a double standard.

That one line explains it all.

Sado will never be listed on the World Heritage registry, mark my word for it.

Sado will never be listed at UNESCO world heritage, it's as simple as that.

Total jgov incompetence. Last week, they said they'll delay it, today it's full steam ahead. Loss of face from being rejected by UNESCO is less than the loss of face from giving into the Koreans.
