For those who have not seen a media 'Pirate' bite a Doubloon, it's a physical test for Gold content which dates back to the first Gold 'coins' Mankind ever invented circa 2600 years ago and were, of course, made to pay soldiers. My own curiosity and my innate cynicism of my fellow Humans caused me a couple of weeks ago to ask Google if the Olympic Gold Medals were actually Gold. THEY ARE NOT. They are Silver with Gold plating.

Like so many things in our current instance of the Human Show, what you see is NOT what you get. And given that the Gold Ryō was a common 'coin' in historical Japan, biting it to test its authenticity was probably a common practice much as the 'pirate' biting a Doubloon or whatever other Gold coin was in the West, and became, at least for a time, a fixture of 'media pirates' everywhere.

Regarding this Mayor, this is probably another non-story like the cardboard no sex bed story and knowing a tad (only a tad) of what is humorous to some Japanese people, it was a joke. You will learn in Japan that 'jokes', whether verbal or physical, rarely translate well and something that will make one culture laugh into seizure will produce only ????s in another. I just laugh at this modern culture of knee-jerk criticism of anything and everything. The only person who has a right to complain about this incident is Miu Goto, the owner of the medal. There is no evidencve that she had any problem with what the mayor did, so nobody else has any right to criticise him at all. How about if everyone just learns to mind their own business?

The guy is an idiot. He even had to remove a mask to bite it. The passive-aggressive apology, basically, "it's your fault if you feel offended by this", is standard for a Japanese politician, but makes it even worse.
