Takashi Kawamura, what a jackass. He makes Japanese mayors look like coarse hicks to the rest of the world.

"Ultraconservative Nagoya has such nice politicians."

and Progressive New York has such nice politicians as well. Here is a good example:

11 women, 7 years of sexual harassment: explore the timeline of Cuomo's alleged misconduct

https://www.timesunion.com/state/article/cuomo-sexual-harassment-report-timeline-16367561.php

In Japan:

Nagoya mayor under fire for biting Olympian's gold medal

In the west:

A governor sexual harasses 11 women.

I think I would prefer "Ultraconservative" Nagoya to progressive New York, particular if I were a woman. How about you?

"Toyota Motor Corp, which owns the club team Goto plays for, has also criticized Kawamura, saying in a statement, "It was an unworthy act and lacks respect"

LOL at Toyota. Hey Toyota didn't you pull all your CMs for the games? Now you are complaining? LOL

Chocolate coin???

(sad) Hahaha...I was wondering if this was going to surface here.

The 'Old boys' can't help themselves. He was compelled to rape the medal.

This is the lingering image of the Games.

Dinosaur puts foot in mouth, embodies ‘kuukiyomenai’. Just another day in Japan politics.

For those who have not seen a media 'Pirate' bite a Doubloon, it's a physical test for Gold content which dates back to the first Gold 'coins' Mankind ever invented circa 2600 years ago and were, of course, made to pay soldiers. My own curiosity and my innate cynicism of my fellow Humans caused me a couple of weeks ago to ask Google if the Olympic Gold Medals were actually Gold. THEY ARE NOT. They are Silver with Gold plating.

"Traditionally, Olympic gold medals are required to be made from at least 92.5% silver, and must contain a minimum of 6 grams of gold."

Like so many things in our current instance of the Human Show, what you see is NOT what you get. And given that the Gold Ryō was a common 'coin' in historical Japan, biting it to test its authenticity was probably a common practice much as the 'pirate' biting a Doubloon or whatever other Gold coin was in the West, and became, at least for a time, a fixture of 'media pirates' everywhere.

Regarding this Mayor, this is probably another non-story like the cardboard no sex bed story and knowing a tad (only a tad) of what is humorous to some Japanese people, it was a joke. You will learn in Japan that 'jokes', whether verbal or physical, rarely translate well and something that will make one culture laugh into seizure will produce only ????s in another. I'd vote for the guy...

Isn't the medal recycled material....no way I would luck it if ain't gold!

Guys a total flop. Giant waste of everything you can think of having a man-sack like that taking up such a primo office. And quit licking the hardware, who raised this mop?

First of all, why meeting now face to face, without social distancing and mask (put on the mayor's face) ? Aichi Pref. including The city of Nagoya is entering a mild SOE today.

Kawamura apologized Wednesday over his conduct. "It was the greatest expression of my affection. I'm sorry if I caused any trouble," he said in a statement.

"It was the greatest expression of my affection."

It reminds me of the NY Governor :(

Ha ha ha… the comedy continues!

How do the elites follow the advice that the common man must?

Obviously, hungry enough to bite the medal, did Kawamura go and eat steak afterwards?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

In defence of the Nagoya Mayor, you cant question the Japanese commitment to the Olympic cause. Just look at the opening ceremonies! London 2012 cant hold a candle to Tokyo 2020/2021.........oh wait!!

Wow. Some people need to have some kind of issue or contrived drama in their lives.

This is a non-issue.

Just googled a picture of this joker..............what a buffoon.

They say never judge a book by its cover.

But you can definitely tell what kind of a moron this dude is just by looking at him.

WTF

I just laugh at this modern culture of knee-jerk criticism of anything and everything. The only person who has a right to complain about this incident is Miu Goto, the owner of the medal. There is no evidencve that she had any problem with what the mayor did, so nobody else has any right to criticise him at all. How about if everyone just learns to mind their own business?

The translation in this article really doesn't convey the tone of his reply. Which is how

kohakuebisu said, it had a very if it bothered YOU my bad.

最大の愛情表現だった。金メダル獲得は憧れだった。迷惑をかけているのであればごめんなさい-

It was the biggest expression of love. I was proud of the winning of the gold medal. Because it bothered some people I'm sorry.

The guy is an idiot. He even had to remove a mask to bite it. The passive-aggressive apology, basically, "it's your fault if you feel offended by this", is standard for a Japanese politician, but makes it even worse.

I think it's fair to say the Olympics brings out the worst in some people.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Ultraconservative Nagoya has such nice politicians.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Miu Goto's act of putting the medal around the neck of the mayor was lacking respect because protocol mandates only the recipient of the medal be allowed to wear it; according to a an Olympic committee member in a documentary on the manufacturing of these medals.

His apology? I'm sure he does not truly regret doing such behavior, watching his reading the written comment in front of the press. I feel full of resentment. Imagine the certificate coming with admiration and saliva.

When you lend your belongings to him, keep in mind that you cover them with something.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Did he really believe that she wanted her golden medal in his dirty mouth?

11 ( +13 / -2 )

He shouldn't have bitten it that's for sure.

He is a brash overbearing man I have met him a few times... unfortunately.

Bart:

It's a hygiene (and health) problem, dear.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

I'm wondering, on what level am I to feel offended by this?

Did his teeth marks actually dent the medal? Was it not pure gold??

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

I hope he disinfected it afterwards.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

The good thing is, that such a nonsense fills the headlines or news and they haven’t any other burning problems. lol

3 ( +9 / -6 )

What an idiot.

17 ( +23 / -6 )

I lived in Naoya. I saw more exotic behavior than Kawamura's. Anyone tell him it was be good luck to bite the medal?

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

"We truly hope (the mayor) will behave (appropriately) as a leader," said the company based in Toyota, near Nagoya.

Which roughly translated means: we think he's an idiot and he won't be in that position this time next year.

Toyota runs Nagoya.
