Kerry urged both countries to try and put the past history behind them

It must be impossible for her that Ms. Park stated in DC that "our position of being victim of Japan will never change the next 1000 years" Having Park said that, May be Kerry should remind Park in case she has forgotten who was the majority of the solders attempted to invade Japan in 1274 and 1281.It would be endless if we must have 1000 years before we reset. It about time to see now and future.

The North is just trying to manipulate the South over the reunions. The South won't cancel the military drills, the North will cancel the reunions in retaliation, and then carry on like pork chops again.

Last year’s joint exercises fueled an unusually sharp and protracted surge in military tensions, with Pyongyang threatening a pre-emptive nuclear strike, and nuclear-capable U.S. stealth bombers making dummy runs over the Korean peninsula.

And those dummy runs shut them up very, very quickly indeed.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

A second round of discussions is scheduled for Friday, with North Korea pushing the South to postpone its annual military exercises with the U.S. until after a planned reunion from February 20-25 of family members separated by the Korean War.

Only a matter of time until South Korea falls for the "we only want peace" and "reunification" carrot trap.

But, let's be real, a Communist State such as North Korea is out for one thing, South Korea. The only way that there will be a reunification is if Communist China is will to allow it. But Communist China will never allow a Democratic united Korea.

How could they allow it? Communist Korea is Communist China's carrot at breaking the US-ROK alliance and sadly the ROK government is falling for it.

So, to all those who believe that the Kim dynasty will gladly and actually step down and move to Communist China you are sadly mistaken.

So, get ready to see scores of T-80s rolling down downtown Seoul during the Communist May-Day parades and start practicing to say, "I love our Dear Leader".

Reunification, the biggest carrot trap ever and the ROK is falling for it.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

What I said is what I read in Korean paper. Of course they don't use the term "extort" for what they do. I have read they think It's Japan's fault that Korea was devided into two, which is not a fact. And they never stop demanding compensation money. And also they are asking experts if they can beat Japan after reunification. So, what can you make out of these?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I think there is too much bad blood between Korea and Japan for the situation to improve for a couple of generations but the generations seems to take 90 years each.

it's unfortunate that SK, like china, will always try to portray themselves as the victims in their relationship toward japan. in so doing, they hope to garner international sympathy. unfortunately, most of the world couldn't give a rat's a""e about the territorial and comfort women issues.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Well the 1000 year statement basically scuppers any chance of meaningful dialogue between SK and Japan. Nice going President Park.

tinawatanabeFeb. 14, 2014 - 06:03PM JST I don't like the way US gives pressure on Japan about Japan-SKorea relations. Japan has been calling for Summit with SKorea. That fact alone is good enough on the part of Japan. Japan is not a SKorea's babysitter.

True, but as long as North Korea keeps the reunification carrot trap the South will continue to shift away from any kind or talks with Japan.

As Ms. Park said “If Japan continues to stick to the same historical perceptions and repeat its past comments, then what purpose would a summit serve? Perhaps it would be better not to have one.”

In other words, if Japan continues to point to the 1965 treaty as to why they won't pay more South Korea will not talk.

I find it amusing how desperately South Korean politicians want to reunification that they would let their guard down. In all their scenarios no one has actually brought up the Kim Dynasty and what will become of it if reunification were to happen.

Actually I don't think no one wants to ask that question because they already know the answer. The Kim dynasty will not surrender it's power.

The only way Korea will be unified is if the South accepts the Kim dynasty as it's rulers.

So, how many South Korean's here are willing to bow before baby Dear Leader?

Thunderbird2Feb. 14, 2014 - 05:05PM JST Well the 1000 year statement basically scuppers any chance of meaningful dialogue between SK and Japan. Nice going President Park.

This is all about reunification, Park is so desperate to be the President that does makes it happen that she would sellout everyone else. She wants to redeem her family past that she will do just about anything.

Don't be surprised if she starts talking about having the US forces leave South Korea. But, if she goes that far there would be a coup and another leader would be put in her place.

Reunification is the worlds largest carrot trap and Park is stepping right into it.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The one who needs to be slapped is Park, daughter of a former IJA Officer in the Kwantung Army. There's only one country that needs to get over WWII history in order get in line with US policy, and it's the one most at risk if North Korea ever get's permission from China to "unify" the Korean peninsula. The US needs to start playing hardball with SKorea, either they want our protection r they want China's. Right now they're trying to have it both ways.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 08:39AM JST Umm, did the title change? Anyway this is hilarious, America couldn't give a crap about North Korea, they just don't want Japan and s.korea fighting because they're desperate to contain china. But it's too late though, because s.korea is already siding with china now.

Actually the US is very concerned about the Communist North. Let's play out two scenarios and you may get why.

If the North invades the South the US would defend it and counter attack. When the US does then China and Russia would have to decide what they would do.

China most likely would enter the North and protect it, when it did this a shooting war might erupt between the US and China. Then it might get worse because of the tension in the region. If Communist China makes a move on the Senkaku Islands or Taiwan we would have a major escalation and bingo WWIII. Commerce suffers and World economy suffers. Then there is Russia, they are the wild card. Being a wild card no one really knows what they will do.

Next, instead of launching and attack on the South the North launches a nuke at Japan. Well then, there would be a response by the US. We would launch a few at them. Then Communist China would most likely respond with their own attack and bingo WWIII.

No one wants war, but if it comes everyone would want peace. But, as I stated on many occasions some countries in the region actually believe that if they start a war it will be a contained one. Example, some in Communist China think that if they invade the Senkaku Islands and moments later try to make peace with Japan that that would be that. But, that is the fanciful dreams of the naïve.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If South Korea wants to reaffirm ties with Japan, it can start by giving back Takeshima, then continue by ceasing to be China's lapdog, bring up actions from almost a century ago at every available opportunity. Japan in return could maybe try avoiding Yasukuni Shrine. I mean, I've got nothing against people visiting there, but it only seems to inflame tensions.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

letsberealistic

Let's climb aboard the 'Korea is to blame for everything' bandwagon. How, in the minds of some people, does a country that was treated severely by another become a 'troublemaker' for complaining about such treatment. Only on the JT boards (I hope). Can people be at least a little more balanced? At least admit that Japan is 'part;y' responsible - can that be managed?

I agree, this is getting a tad ridiculous. Nobody in the world typically have this kind of arrogant view toward S.Korea while glorifying everything Japan. I mean yeah, most people don't give a crap or don't know about Asia, but at least they don't outright look down on S.Korea while glorifying everything Japan like the right-wingers are.

Most people think that Japan and S.Korea are the same, or that they get along since they're both Asians, so they're surprised to find out that they viciously and vehemently hate each other on the level that seem out of proportion to the actual situation.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

@igloobuyer - While there are elements of truth to the claims you list, they are not the whole story and present an incomplete and biased picture of the Japanese occupation. The Koreans simply refuse to accept that millions of their citizens embraced the liberation from feudalism that accompanied the Japanese occupation, and the opportunities presented by the modernity (and industrialization) they introduced.

The notion that every Korean was bitterly opposed to the Japanese occupation, or suffered under it, is a fallacy - consider these statistics: At the end of the Pacific War in 1945 there were an estimated 2.4 million Koreans living in Japan (roughly 10% of the total population of Korea at that time), and after assisted voluntary repatriation, 650,000 Koreans chose to stay in Japan rather than return to Korea. The decision made to stay in Japan by 3% of the total Korean population is counter-intuitive to the argument of universal suffering or 'slavery' promoted by post-war Korean nationalists.

Until contemporary Koreans acknowledge that a large number of Koreans embraced and benefited from the Japanese occupation (including most of the founders of Korea's modern industrial conglomerates), and embrace the truths of their own history, the inane bitterness towards the Japanese and 'the children of collaborators' exemplified by the current Korean government is set to continue. Good luck, Biden.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I think SKorea is somehow trying to make Japan pay for the reunification. That's why it's important for them that Japan accept their view of history so they can extort Japan. But the reason they want reunification is not that they want to save North people but with expanded country and increased population they think they can beat Japan. Their obsession of anti-Japan is quite scary.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 01:49PM JST lol, there's no such thing as the "Reunification Carrot", whatever that means. You're getting your info from 2chan yet again...

No, not "reunification carrot", instead a "reunification carrot trap". A Carrot trap lures an unsuspecting target into a trap with a guise of something very tempting, get it?

BTW, why do you always claim someone goes or comes from 2chan when you disagree with them or vice versa?

Opinions are just opinions, everyone has them and one opinion will be different from the next. I may disagree with your opinions, but they are yours and more power to you.

Imagine if the world ran that way how little problems there would be......

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 01:49PM JST Neither the North or the South really want to reunify, to tell you the truth. They're both too comfortable being in their own positions, even though a reunification is inevitable.

I see you haven't been keeping up with the economic news or the Korean polls. Have you heard of President Park's "three step plan" for reunification?

Or how about President Park's "3-year innovation plan"? This one is her economic plan that is failing to meet year one goals.

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 01:49PM JST That's why China, Japan and S.Korea need to skillfully dismantle the North and make the reunification process as painless as possible to all the countries in the region.

It takes 4 to tango, if North Korea doesn't want to be dismantled it won't be. Well unless you are advocating that everyone invade it?

But, it seems that you have clearly forgotten a major player in your formula, the United States. But, I expected that anyways.

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 01:49PM JST Sigh, you're all over the place, you're clearly confused about everything... lol.

So, in your opinion speaking about Korea's politics and economy is being all over the place?

Maybe you need to do a bit more research before posting negative comments about others. You may become surprised by what you discover.

All you need is look up a few of these things and you will see that there is more to diplomacy and politics than the simple black and white world you think we live in.

Try some financial mags and a few non-bias sites that is a great start. I find that WSJ, BBC well you get the gist.

If you decide to research enjoy, if you don't, well enjoy.

"U.S. would never accept the North as a nuclear state"

So why did you let them get nuclear weapons?? They took over the power plant for a reason.

What do they think when a crack head takes over a lab, and he says he is not going to smoke it??

The U.S has made this hole problem and there is only 1 way out, that is war.

NK is never going to hand them over and America is "thick as bricks" if they think they can change there mind. In fact they are playing dumb and 100% know they will never hand over there nuclear bombs.

As it stands they are now starting up the nuclear power plant, that will give them mass nuclear weapons. As it also stands "now", they can not attach a nuclear warhead to a missile, as they need to make the explosive 100 times smaller, then the explosives that detonated there nuclear bombs under ground. NK is 8 years away fro being able to attach a nuclear bomb to a missile.

"My point" what are we waiting for? The time to plan a attack is 100% within the next 3 years. We must take them out before they get 30++++ nuclear bombs.

So to date we think they have about 6 or 7 nuclear bombs left. I would lie to them like they have to us over the last 50 years. We must come to a deal that will let them test nuclear bombs "underground" unto 2016. This way they will test 4 or more leaving them with only 2 to 3 nuclear bombs. That's when we attack, and go in in small number but mass air support.

First they should spend $4 billion on making mass small blimps that will cover Seoul's sky's. These blimps will help stop mass damage from NK cannons rounds. As it stands they can hit Seoul from NK and it will take America about 17 hours to takeout all there cannons. So flooding the sky with blimps will see very small damage and deaths.

Well more then that but we we do not take out this young dumb nut care, he will have 100+ nuclear bombs in 10 years time. Time to act now.

rickyveeFEB. 14, 2014 - 12:00PM JST @igloo uhh, slow down, there, buddy. you need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

Look, you said; "it's unfortunate that SK, like china, will always try to portray themselves as the victims in their relationship toward japan"

You are suggesting SK are were not the victims of Japan and just 'portray' themselves as so. That IS the relationship, whether you like it or not; Japan the instigator/Korea the victim. The problem is Japan doesn't want to accept this fully. I like both Korea and Japan (I don't hate any country or people - it's an impossibility in my mind).

I agree that SK leaders do use the issue of Japanese war atrocities comfort women for political gain, BUT that does not diminish the responsibility of Japan in ANY way.

0 ( +6 / -7 )

So? SO what?! What are you saying? The same thing happens during ANY occupation. There were Nazi supports and collaborates in their thousands wherever they went - you offer some people money, power and opportunities many will accept. They DOES NOT make what they did any less terrible. The same for Japan. Stop making excuses for Japan's actions like an uuyoku!

You're not even trying to comprehend SecularBeast's post for the point is that there is no balance in Korean education when it comes to subject of Japan. What the current Korean government is asking is for Japan to accept their one sided view and any miniscule divergence is met with their usual childish rant despite Kerry's plea that past should be left in the past.

No matter what Korea does will not change the mind of Abe & co. or the general population because as recent history suggests, there are many other Asian nations who have moved on and are making efforts to have more prosperous relations with Japan. And frankly, Japan is willing to oblige.

As JoeBig touched on, there is going to be a time where the situation in Korean peninsula will be dealt exclusively by SK, NK, and China where U.S., Japan, and Russia will just sit there and watch it unfold.

0 ( +5 / -4 )

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 11:42AM JST So obviously, it would benefit China, S.Korea and Japan to corporate and solve this North Korean mess, preferably without the US. The US has nothing on this.

Now, if you haven't noticed North Korea has been dangling the Reunification Carrot Trap for a while now. Park, is so desperate to hide the fact that her economic plan is a near disaster that she has been on the Reunification prosperity band wagon as of late.

She claims that with her three step reunification plan Korea will see a new golden age and it will only cost $50 Billion dollars! But, that is a pipedream dreamt up by Park in her desperation. Most analyst have said that the actual figure is closer to $50 trillion.

Support for her own utopian plan is slowly losing steam. The younger generation of South Koreans don't want to flip the bill for the next 30 years. So Park will need a whole lot of help from her friends in the NIS if she wants her legacy to be remembered as a bad joke.

Now the US, it is still the most powerful nation in the world even though some folks hope it weren't. As long as the US has a military it is needed in these meetings. The US is allied with South Korea and Japan and Communist China is allied with North Korea.

So, they are needed in these meetings.

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 11:42AM JST Seriously, get with the times, please. North Korea is more of a headache for China than anything else. I'm sure that China is more embarrassed by North Korea than anything.

North Korea is a troubled child, but a needed one.

If you believe that Communist China isn't pulling the strings then you need to do some more research. Before you bring up the wikileaks cables, you should really look at them deeper and see who sent them first.

When Communist China needs to put pressure on the world the North does something insane.

Now, if you want to see what is going on then all you have to do is either buy a newspaper or just look up old archived reports and be amazed.

Also look up the Confucius Institute and see what China has been doing with this front organization.

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 11:42AM JST And well North Korea... one even stops pretending that it has anything to do with communism. It's nothing but a military fascist state.

Actually Communist Korea follows a Stalin form of Communism, it created a cult of personality through repression and fear. It is Communist because of it's collective ideals and absolutely zero free market.

The State owns everything and everyone works for the common good of the state until Communism wins out against all other beliefs.

Karl Marx believed that Capitalism would come to an end in the 20th century. But, he was wrong.

Read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations if you want to see how things should work.

Eiji TakanoFeb. 15, 2014 - 11:42AM JST You DO realize that China is hardly a "communist" nation anymore?

Let's talk about that one, that is in a way correct. To most and all Communist, the only way to achieve true Communism is if the world has no states and everyone lives in the mythical utopian society. But that, as I stated before is nothing but a fantasy.

Did you know that China's military doesn't pledge it's allegiance to China or it's Constitution? The PLA pledges it's allegiance to the Communist Party. The military's main purpose is to ensure that the Communist elites stay in power.

So, why is there a sort of free market in Communist China, because the Communist elites like to send their kids to private schools overseas rather than sending them to the people's schools.

Just because you have heard that they aren't Communist doesn't mean that is correct. Everything in China is owned by the Central Party and the Central Party is made up of elite Communist. If ever they get tired of what is going on all they have to do is tell the military to take everything and bingo, the ride is over.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The internal strife still continues on the Korean peninsula as in the days of Queen Min and Daeweongun. I don't think Japan will have anything more to do with the turmoil on the peninsula. Even if the right of collective self-defense is approved, Japan with its leaders' shrine visit or historical views will be ostracized in the region and prevented from forming a united front with the US and South Korea and getting involved as a military subcontractor in the peninsula.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Interesting, "What Japanese history lessons leave out" is #1 read on BBC news:

Japanese people often fail to understand why neighbouring countries harbour a grudge over events that happened in the 1930s and 40s. The reason, in many cases, is that they barely learned any 20th Century history. I myself only got a full picture when I left Japan and went to school in Australia.

Mariko's Japanese textbook: Only a footnote on the Nanjing massacre

There was another sentence on the Koreans and the Chinese who were brought to Japan as miners during the war, and one line, again in a footnote, on "comfort women" - a prostitution corps created by the Imperial Army of Japan.

but also

There was also just one sentence on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21226068

It seems that the Japanese education doesn't really give a crap about much of anything other than memorizing some random facts. I took the College examination test and yes, it was exactly like that. Memorizing random facts instead of actually understanding historical contexts.

Former history teacher and scholar Tamaki Matsuoka holds Japan's education system responsible for a number of the country's foreign relations difficulties.

"Our system has been creating young people who get annoyed by all the complaints that China and South Korea make about war atrocities because they are not taught what they are complaining about," she said.

"It is very dangerous because some of them may resort to the internet to get more information and then they start believing the nationalists' views that Japan did nothing wrong."

That is true. Now, we can access to the photocopies of original historical materials and what we found was that many of the descriptions in KOREAN history textbooks were wrong. The problem is Koreans still do not realize it. They need to sort out what is true from what is untrue.

At least I can say "forced name change" and "slavery" were untrue. No knee jerk reactions. What we need is historical evidence.

@Eiji Takano: You do realise that China is North Korea's main ally right? They're both communist nations. If North Korea makes an aggressive move, China will back them up, as things currently stand. Unless Xi Jinping and CCP get outed and replaced with a rational, democratically elected government, then China will always support NK. Not that it'll end well for the two. True, the loss of life will be substantial, but ultimately, China and North Korea will be defeated. They just can't compete with Japan and the US. Naturally, Taiwan, Vietnam and India would join the fight against them. China has been a serious headache to the entire region. What it would come down to is what SK and Russia do. South Korea has become something of a lapdog to China, so it is possible they would join them, but they'd lose US support. Not a good thing considering the 28,000 US troops stationed in South Korea. Russia seems to be quite mature and rational lately, slapping down China's request for back up in territorial disputes with Japan. So one would hope that they would fight alongside America. In that instance, China and North Korea would be utterly surrounded. Victory for them would be impossible.

John Kerry is right to caution North Korea, and advise South Korea to put the past behind it. South Korea and Japan both need to do this, and work together from now on. No more bickering, no more disputes, no more dragging up past wrongdoings. Just cooperation. Of course, if that ever happens, I'll eat my Stetson.
