What is "condolence diplomacy" preciesely?

And who is consoling whom?

Why would we console them? He wasn't their leader.

Why would they console us? He wasn't PM or especially well-liked. It wasn't my family member that got assasinated.

Kishida has said the controversial state-sponsored ceremony for Abe would serve as an important opportunity to communicate with other countries

As if he were short of creating meaningful opportunities to communicate. What a waste...Time, money and SECURITY uncalled for....

Well as long long as everyone took the time and spent the money to come why not hold meetings as well. Totally separate issue from the funeral itself.

Democracy folks, isn't it amazing?

Condolences to our tax money. Why did he have to waste it on this??

Kishida's New Capitalism is starting to look very similiar to Abe's Cronyism with a different name.

James - Kishida's New Capitalism is starting to look very similiar to Abe's Cronyism with a different name.

It's new cronyism.

Never heard discussion of business at a funeral

It’s great to see respected leaders from around the world paying their respects to a fallen well respected former leader ! Well deserved for the most popular and longest serving prime minister here!

'condolence diplomacy' unseemly, unworthy, demeaning, cynical even, to the memory of former Prime Minster assassinated in the street.

Shameful

Big cheques to all those beggars makes that ‘funeral’ even more expensive at a multiple factor.

Never heard discussion of business at a funeral

That's a customary practice, especially among the cosa nostra (and politicians).

I'm starting 3 day's to my fellow tax payers for the waste of money that's more expensive than QE2s funeral.

It they had half a brain cell they would make it a national holiday to reduce the bitterness a touch to the minions but oh no! J Inc must stagger on.

Hilarious.... no one important is coming so Kishida is left having meetings with the PM of Gabon. I'm sure they just decided the fate of the world in their little chat over tea.

"but the total cost could balloon, triggering a public backlash."

It will balloon. When has there been a public project or event that hasn't gone over budget?

Notice!! NO women on the Japanese side, LOL

Some people think the "VIPs" are paying their own way? There are some exceptions like VP Kamala Harris flying over on a government jet for security reasons. All the others are flying over in First Class on ANA and JAL with the Japanese government/taxpayers footing the bill.

PS. They are not paying for their hotel suites in central Tokyo either.

condolence diplomacy'

This must be a new phrase in the English Language. I'm not even sure how it translates from Japanese. Can anyone out there help with that one?
