So why talk with Xi in Thailand while ignoring democratically elected President English Tsai of Taiwan-ROC?

The meeting was of the East Asia Summit. Taiwan is not a member of this forum.

Kishida tells Asian leaders China infringing on Japan's sovereignty

So why talk with Xi in Thailand while ignoring democratically elected President English Tsai of Taiwan-ROC?

Da-kine perplexing mental state of mind.

Asian leaders must be scratching their heads to alopecia!

wakey wakey. USA is pushing most of the world to guarantee they hold the reins. Or be sanctioned. They have officially stated they can’t allow any nation to undermine their world domination.

The US and the democracies of Europe learned some lessons the hard way during WWII. Towards the end of that awful war the leaders of the Allied nations sat down at Bretton Woods to figure out a way to prevent a recurrence of the dynamics that led to WWII. The UN, the World Bank, International Monetary fund, a commitment to free trade as opposed to the beggar thy neighbor policies of the pre-WWII period, and the European Common Market were all part of a design to eliminate to the degree possible the conditions that led to WWII and the tens of millions who were killed by that war.

Actions by China in particular and yes actions by former President Trump, threatened to undermine that. T-Rump is gone but China is not. China seeks a world order where they dominate everyone else at the expense of everyone else, a return to the days of the Middle Kingdom where all the surrounding nations obey their orders from Beijing and pay tribute. It is natural that many nations want no part of this and with WWII in their memory there is no surprise the west unites to resist China. China has gone from being only an economic competitor to a threat to their national sovereignty.

Any upcoming meeting between himself and Jinping is in doubt,

Sigh, Mr. Xi's family name is Xi. His given name, what would be a first name in the US and many but not all European nations is Jinping. His father was Xi Zhonxun. Calling Mr. Xi "Jinping" is like calling the Russian President Vladimir instead of Mr. Putin, or calling the US President "Joe" instead of Mr. Biden. In China the family name always comes first.

Ummm "U.S. Administrations going back at least to the Nixon Administration have stated that the United States takes no position on the question of who has sovereignty over the Senkakus. It also has been U.S. policy since 1972, however, that the 1960 U.S.-Japan Security Treaty covers the islands."

China will and always will reject any thing negative in their light. China's way of telling the "TRUTH" is just tell a "LIE"!

China denies any abuses of the Uyghur, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority based in the far western Xinjiang region, and has sent a government delegation to Geneva to counter what it says are erroneous findings by the U.N. rights office.

Kishida was clearly referring Japan's sovereignty, which is non-sensical in this context. I think Alan Harrison's point is correct.

I beg to differ, as we are aware a number of East Asian countries have had their sovereignty overridden by China’s actions in the South China Sea; highlighting the threat to Taiwan and the actions taken to impinge upon Japanese sovereignty paints the broader picture of CCP aggression and effectively says you are not alone, building consensus and partnership on push back to these actions.

The article is not a verbatim report of the speech so parsing the speech too closely from this material may not be practical but the broad sense is clear.

The Russian army is becoming weaker every day, with Russia's military power slipping away. The time may soon come when Putin invites Japan to take back the Senkakus, just to get them off his hands.

Indisputably you say? And yet both the United Nations and the United States do not have an official position on the sovereignty of Senkaku/Diaoyu.

Please do some research before piping in. The Senkakus are recognized as territory under Japanese Administration. The United States has reaffirmed multime times that any attempt to take the Senkakus by force will invoke Article 5 of the US/JPN Mutual Defense Treaty, meaning the US will defend the Senkakus from invasion. Additionally, PRC(China) maps up to the late 1960s show them to be Japanese territory. Furthermore, the only evidence of any human habitation are the remains of a Japanese Bonito processing factory. China's claim is garbage, having usurped Taiwan's claim for fishing rights, and made it a militarily strategic goal. Yes, it's indisputable Japanese.

USA has nothing to do with it despite the paranoid fantasies of the “USA is behind everything” crowd.

Most of us had hoped that China would be a big brother, not a big bully.

Never before has a Japanese prime minister criticized China by name at an international conference. What caused Kishida’s sudden assertiveness? Or was he just saying something to please the US ?

Kishida is simply stating the truth. One that all leaders Asian and otherwise are already aware. The Senkakus are indisputably Japanese territory. How is stating that "pleasing" anyone?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

“Please don’t leave us, but don’t make us choose.”

. . . A SE Asian diplomat to a U S. Diplomat

@evegaijinAnd he didn't mention the Japanese occupation of Cambodia during ww2 ?

. Do Chinese leaders allow Tiananmen Square to be referenced? Will Chinese leaders allow people to move freely about in China's western regions? If not, why not? As someone who's interested in history, and the Silk Road, it would be interesting to see those areas.

Kishida's remarks follow those of U.S. President Joe Biden, who stressed to Asian leaders on Sunday the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait and ensuring freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.

Kishida's face speaking with Biden's voice.

 Japan's sovereignty

Japan is not a sovereign country. It is ruled by US.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

I was not aware that the East China Sea was Japanese sovereign territory.

I assume it is because Japan and US were playing war games with their jets over the East China Sea last week...

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Never before has a Japanese prime minister criticized China by name at an international conference. What caused Kishida’s sudden assertiveness? Or was he just saying something to please the US ?

The assertiveness is caused by being protected by US nuclear weapons. Easy to pick on others, when you daddy is big and powerful.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Kishida calling it like it is. Any upcoming meeting between himself and Jinping is in doubt, and if it manages to still occur it will be much more tense. China does not like public criticism because it looses face and must defend its already ruined reputation.

Other East Asian nations being treated in a similar manner to Japan by China, now knows if it speaks up it has allies in condemning China.

America has its issues with China and Japan has its own long list of grievances. China has great trouble making friends anywhere and the only reason it has any is because its few "friends" also have issues against the US and that is the fragile glue that holds them together.

Until China learns how to become a good global citizen, and act accordingly it will continue to face the rightly deserved criticism that others level at it. The problems as always seem to stem from the one party system employed by the CCP, to run China. Its leader has usurped party rules meant to keep the country from falling into the grip of another Despot. Jinping is a Despot not willing to give up personal control over 1.4 billion people and all aspects of their lives. The people in free nations see it for what it is and resist it at all times. China will never be world leader under the CCP. Jinping will never be leader of the world.

Even if America falls from the number one spot it has held since the end of WWII, the world will never follow or submit to China. At times it seems they just do not realize that simple fact.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I think Prime Minister Kishida needs to look up the definition of sovereignty. Or lost in translation?

For a country that has been occupied by US for 80 years now, their English is surprisingly weak...

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

How many badges does he need?

These are in case he gets hungry, and need something to chew on. Biting medals is a Japanese custom.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Expect a hissy fit from China. They will no doubt say something like - Don't interfere in our affairs (while we do it to others in the region).

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Kishida probably finally mentioned China by name due to the recent pledges of support from Biden, Euro countries, and Aus and the potential of cordial relations with S Korea. Also China hasn't lifted a finger to condemn nor dissuade Kim from shooting off his rockets which is making it less necessary to appease China. Not to mention, the PRC IS becoming increasingly belligerent.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Stop doing business with China, don't allow the silent invasion. Cut diplomatic ties with China.

Its no secret that China wants Japan as a satellite republic like Uighur and Tibet.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

"Kishida's remarks follow those of U.S. President Joe Biden, who stressed to Asian leaders on Sunday the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait and ensuring freedom of navigation in the South China Sea."

The above line says all it needs to say? doesn't it?

If, the order had been in reverse? Perhaps, it can be taken a bit more seriously??

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Kishida is quite right and it is about time Japan clearly presented the facts publicly rather than hinting obliquely, a forthright condemnation of China's vile actions.

I was not aware that the East China Sea was Japanese sovereign territory

No it isn’t but he was speaking to a group of leaders for some of whom it is. As the representative of Japan he was expressing political and diplomatic support to those affected while calling out China’s actions towards Japan thus highlighting how widespread China's aggressive bullying is in the wider region.

USA has nothing to do with it despite the paranoid fantasies of the “USA is behind everything” crowd.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Its quite a round about way, to go after the resources or to prevent a country from accessing the resources in Xinjiang, don’t you think? If I were the US, I would skip all the false accusations and just directly support East Turkestan, the separatists and insurrectionist there. Isn’t that the normal and more direct method by the US?

The US has been supporting the pan-Turkic fascists since the late 1960s. It's the usual grim story of US support for terrorists, racial and religious supremacists and violent extremists by the NED and so on.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Well said Mr. Kishida, but the Chinese dont listen to words. They only listen to guns.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Even if I agree with Kishida for once, then what can it do?

Asian leaders are largely within the non-aligned movement that seeks to create a non-USD, multipolar, socialist world order against neoliberal capitalism and Western imperialism. Japan could have joined this movement but the US prevented it and brainwashed Japanese people to believe against it.

What can Japan offer Asian leaders when China/Russia and BRICS/SCO can offer way more?

Japan should realize that the country is becoming an irrelevant island before Meiji Restoration, and Japanese people are proud of becoming one. Voting for LDP for decades is proof of cherishing Japan's decline and poverty.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Kishida has orders from above and as LDP is the only government forever in Japan, nobody can object to blank checks to USA military, industrial military arms complex, USA mafia style protection racket, hosting bases with nukes, Japanese economy destroying sanctions.

we need a new progressive independent leadership.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Kishi San is more concerned with conveying the emotions and fears of the US than actually facing the real problems of Japan and having a better relationship and understanding with the rest of Asia.

Funny how some pull America into this. Always blame America. Sheesh....

Because it is the great reality, even if this truth bothers you..

Sheesh....

lol..

"There has been continued, increasing actions by China in the East China Sea that violate Japan's sovereignty. China also continues to take actions that heighten regional tension in the South China Sea,"

I was not aware that the East China Sea was Japanese sovereign territory.

Like a child telling the teacher on others students are picking on you and you expect the teacher,to confront the bully

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Historically, Japan making such claims is, not going to be received well.

Under current modern day times, it has a point.

An interesting situation.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Japan's sovereignty does not exist, japan stole the Okinawa area and destroy the Ryukyu culture. Taiwan is part of China.

China seems to be infringing on Indias, vietnams, the Philippines too. There is a bully boy on the block. Or at the very least a loan shark on the block.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

If I were the US, I would skip all the false accusations and just directly support East Turkestan, the separatists and insurrectionist there. Isn’t that the normal and more direct method by the US?

There is no evidence of genocide in Xinjiang. The UN failed to produce anything more than “may have” committed human rights abuses. Genocide isn’t even mentioned.

We all know why the US cares so much about Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang despite the many murdered in US wars in the Middle East. Black gold was discovered in Oklahoma and the land was taken away. Why not do the same with the Chinese?

The province Xinjiang in China’s northwest is monstrously rich in black gold. Xinjiang’s black gold reserves are massive compared to other black gold fields in China. In June 2021, PetroChina discovered nearly 5.72 billion barrels of black gold in the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang. This find will prolong the companies’ oil drilling in the province even more and continue to cause massive air pollution.

The Americans love oil.

I think the thugs of this world only respond to credible threats, so Japan will have to back up their words with actions (Say, against DPRK?) Are they prepared to do that?

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

His numbers are tanking back home partly because of his ineptitude and partly because of Abe's legacy which is now putrefying. He's going to do everything he can to show the polls back home that he's a strong and dependable leader.

Things are getting real.

-4 ( +10 / -14 )

I think Prime Minister Kishida needs to look up the definition of sovereignty. Or lost in translation?

-16 ( +11 / -27 )

Kishida is correct. Communist China is relentless in incursions into Japanese territory, even so much as sending a missile into Japans EEZ. Their ethnic cleansing and locking up in concentration camps of Muslim Uighyurs is shameful and also continuing - and more world leaders need to call this out.

And left unchecked, China will turn free Taiwan into a horrible police state like Hong Kong is.

16 ( +27 / -11 )

How many badges does he need? I really think it’s a sign of personal frailty to feel the need to display so many. You are a PM. Everyone knows.

China denies any abuses of the Uyghur, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority based in the far western Xinjiang region,

A group of people who live closer to Baghdad then Peking, pretty sure the Nazies said they were resettling The Jewish population not killing them too. History does repeat in the most Foulsom ways.

1 ( +13 / -12 )

Would those leaders really listen? What Japan leverage and influence so far? Giving away development assistance using Japanese weak currency?
