yeah sure we're all really happy that he was released and will be okay but don't forget because of the choices he made a known terrorist group received millions of dollars in financing and many more people will die because of it

With all the good news about the release of the captive journalist, it seems no one has mentioned how the release transpired. I am assuming the silence means that it was paid off?

But was there ever actually anything in reality to support that comment? It may be true, but repeating a comment from another thread, if that original comment wasn't even supported, is where fake news comes from.

Well, a quick Giggle reveals a raft of Japanese sites reporting the 'secret' 3 million dollar Qatar role, but it could all be Chinese whispers.

Asahi's Aera Magazine has a fairly balanced write-up on this, and their final paragraph says essentially that Qatar seems to have paid but only time will tell what really happened. But expect Japan to show their gratitude to Turkey and Qatar in other ways, it adds.

Aw common, dont just down-vote a comment without providing verifiable counter-argument. There might be no verifiable proof that the release was paid off - BUT please show any proof that it was not.

Thanks. It's important that we ensure that we repeat things that are confirmed, or at least are transparent as to the possible degree of their accuracy. Rumors and fake news get started by the well-intentioned repeating things that are incorrect.

Very well done by PM Abe to go over the top to save the country's citizens, whereas most other nations wouldn't even acknowledge they had lost someone

They just admitted a ransom was paid! If they had said "no ransom was paid" it would be another story. Clearly a 3rd party paid the money on behalf of Japan.

So how much did they get paid for this good deed?

It is pretty obvious Turkey paid the random. They really wanted to do this favor for Japan and be close with Tokyo. Why else would the terrorists release him...

Oh dear, gogogo, you have posted the same link that I posted here last time this discussion came up. And as I said then, even though this is The Times of London, that does not guarantee it’s the truth. The article merely quotes the Syrian Observatory, the same source as all the other Giggled articles above; we have moved no closer to establishing whether the Observatory’s source is/was reliable.

They might all be right, but I could not find one that had an independent source, i.e. apart from the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. This is not to say that I do not trust the Observatory, and actually their track record has been surprisingly good, and what they report might indeed be true, but it is always safer to keep looking behind the scenes.
