Idiot! It's truly unfortunate that people like this manage to get elected and are given a soapbox for their agendas.

Yubaru

I think you are originally from U.S. Since the W.W II, a country that had wars most often in the world is U.S. What do you think about it?

-18 ( +6 / -24 )

Sounds as dumb and unhinged like a certain politician that shall go unnamed.

The good thing is that he was criticized by the lower parliament and kicked out of one party.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

I think you are originally from U.S. Since the W.W II, a country that had wars most often in the world is U.S. What do you think about it?

Shouldn't this question be asked directly of the people in those countries?

I am sure if you asked the people of France, they would be very happy the Americans came over to liberate them from Nazi occupation.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

SK and Russia both seized the islands in question when Japan was not in able to defend itself. This guy is an idiot, but he does mention an inconvenient fact. Those islands were taken by military action, and it would be difficult to regain them by anything less. His comment “isn’t war the only way to get them back” sounds more like a trick question than a suggestion.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Glad to see he was expelled and only could find a home in a fringe party.

You would have to think if South Koreans are permanently on that island and Japanese people or politicians even for show can't just travel there as if it were domestic travel, hasn't is already more or less been forfeited to or retained by South Korea?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The Japanese side is incredibly arrogant and over their heads in thinking they can bully South Korea like they did in the past. I don't see how this dispute can ever be solved as long as the Japanese government is run by ultra-nationalists who believe Japan did nothing wrong during the war. Similar to England, Japan is an echo chamber of one-sidedness. All the information people are exposed to in Japan is one-sided. Majority of Japanese have no clue about their own history. They are told these islands belong to them, and they are not exposed to information that says otherwise.

You make many good points and then spoil it with this:

Similar to England, Japan is an echo chamber of one-sidedness.

Just because the British media is largely owned by billionaire foreigners and the Little Englander mentality seems to be in the ascendancy right now, it doesn't mean that we're all racist bigots who want to kick out the blacks, browns and Johnny Foreigner, regardless of the outcome. We're not all dumb enough to fall for their lies, mate.

More tax payer money waisted on a drunken idiot, the only benifit for tax payers is the damage done to his liver and brain.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

He later retracted and apologized for his remarks, but the lower house of Japan's parliament passed a rare resolution which said he was "not qualified to be a Diet member."

He's very qualified. making STUPID comments in public seems to be an important part of lawmaking here.

Maruyama was expelled from the Japan Innovation Party in May and joined the NHK Kara Kokumin Wo Mamoru To (the party to protect the people from NHK) in July.

Boy, just about anyone can come up with a party these days

He wrote since WWII.

ILoveCoffee.. there are a few outliers Im sure just as there is in any democratic political system but to say a lot of people in the Japanese government want to go to war with their neighbors is the kind of nonsense hyperbole that causes problems in the first place.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Why single out this one loser as an idiot? There is not one of the bureaucrats in the Japanese diet that has any education in politics. All they have is money. Money is power in Japan. TIJ!

It's time to get out of Japan before one of these idiots does start another war in Asia.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

He is a lawmaker and this is a entire country which does military drills to protect the 2 rocks every year.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

While at first it may seen like war is out of the question in 2019, there are a lot of people in the Japanese government who want to have a war not just with South Korea, but with other neighboring countries too.

Unfortunately, this is a reality and dark side of Japan. Ive heard some right leaning Japanese speak on how they should of won the pacific war and how inferior America is; yes there are these people. If this clown did provoke a conflict, those who know about this arrogant "spirit" would hand him his behind and history would repeat itself.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

when one of these racist nutjob oyaji nationalist comes at me with his revisionist version of history, and how great Japan was how they could of won the war etc, I just start a conversation about the turn around at Midway, the superiority of US planes, I mean I go into details. Its interesting, like they wanted me to feel humiliated, like I am interested in his BS, but instead he feels humiliated and starts pouting when he realizes I know about it than he does. I never really understood the logic; like dealing with a small child.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

This time it is against South Korea, I am watching whether his gabbage utterance would be met with the same strong reporting and reaction like the first time against Russia.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It's easy to suggest war when you won't actually have to put your life on the line.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

I would much rather the big issue of Takeshima is settled soon by the ICJ, if SK are confident they really own the Island. Maruyama is being stupid by stating a full-scale war soon between SK and Japan is the best option to recover this Japanese Territory. Japan would win convincingly with the strength of her Navy, but there would be casualties on both side.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

Japan would win convincingly with the strength of her Navy,

Lol

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Historically speaking, this is the action of getting something whether its one country's or not's once diplomacy has failed as in most cases. IMO it's time for the awakening of the Samuri. Wake Up! Japan should have built something out of that rock than mere words, the Koreans did, the Russians did and soon China too will build something ON the Senkaku's, who's going to stop it. No one.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

He's right, but South Korea's occupation of the islands (legitimate in my view) is just another symbol of Japan's diplomatic and military impotence

You know the elephant in the room is...Japan has never been a real sovereign nation after the war. Your trying to create a fantasy that it is. This Maruyama and other oyaji know this and cant stand it.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

drluciferToday  09:46 am JST

Japan would win convincingly with the strength of her Navy,

Lol

No one will "lol" at the worlds 4th largest Navy. Even bigger than British Navy. Thats why SK wouldn't choose war.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

No one will "lol" at the worlds 4th largest Navy

China would see it as a window to enter the conflict, and the US doesnt want that. Japan answers to the US, so end of discussion

5 ( +7 / -2 )

I don't agree with violence or starting wars with our neighbors.. but S. Korea should equally share control and access to the Takeshima island, its been Japanese territory and the best outcome for S. Korea is to share equal control while they have the upper hand because Japan did not take serious action in its claims, which under international law it belongs to Japan.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

the worlds 4th largest Navy.

allot of this Japan "has this big military" and all this wonder, the JSDF was created by the US, even though the US also created their constitution and prohibited them from having a standing army. It was the NPA then morphed into the JSDF then into whatever it is now, under the US guidance. Your trying to whitewash history etc, like Japan has been on the scene with the big independent military. Japan does what the US tells it, thats final.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Mr. Hodaka Maruyama is the proverbial Canary in the coalmine, he's just sounding the population to see if the call resonates with the wider public , before probably, going more vociferous.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

@BeerDeliveryGuy

it would be difficult to regain them by anything less

The problem is that Japan has a 0% probability of defeating either in wars.

And the US will not intervene because neither the Southern Kurils nor the Liancourt Rocks are included in the US-Japan defense treaty. If Japan starts wars there, then it is own its own.

@IloveCoffee

they would try to provoke SK to attack them first,

Neither Russia nor Korea have reasons to attack first; they hold the territories.

A war is started only when Japan attacks the Kurils or the Liancourt Rocks in the name of "Territorial Recovery" operations.

Both South Korea and Japan are pretty much equal in terms of military power.

Not at all. The ROK of today is far more powerful than Japan, like five times. The war would be over rather quickly when 5,000 ROK missiles land on Tokyo in 3 days.

The misfortune of Japan is that the ROK has amassed a massive firepower to fight an apocalyptic second Korean War, which will then be turned toward Japan in a hypothetical war.

@NZ2011

Japanese people or politicians even for show can't just travel there

Japanese people CAN visit the Liancourt Rocks. All they need is

1) Not be on the black list. The ROK government keeps a list of Japanese rightwing extremists and ban their entry at the airport.

2) A ferry ticket to the Liancourt Rocks.

Landing is not guaranteed, as that depends on weather of the day. If the weather is good, then the ferry docks and everyone has several hours to walk around. If the weather doesn't permit docking, then the ferry circles around the Liancourt Rocks and returns.

An average of 50 Japanese tourists land on the Liancourt Rocks each year.

No one will "lol" at the worlds 4th largest Navy. Even bigger than British Navy. Thats why SK wouldn't choose war.

The Japanese Navy was nothing to sniff at in WW2 either, and look what happened.Japan would lose any conflict disastrously with the current gang of 3rd generation old men in charge. Before a war broke out the entire government would have to be deposed by the military and placed under house arrest for Japan to have any chance of avoiding a total fiasco.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

He's right, but South Korea's occupation of the islands (legitimate in my view) is just another symbol of Japan's diplomatic and military impotence

Spot on. War is a result of failed diplomacy, and looking at all the majors at the moment, they are all failing miserably, with massive economic, social and security consequences.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Japan has a lot of war heads, as simple as that.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

and what about Russia, does Japan really think it would be a match against Russias military especially as America wouldn't step in and help if Japan instigated it. Didn't think so , time to stop acting tough and get with diplomacy sending 100s thousands to die just over a few islands and to save some face is just plain lunacy. Those that think its a good idea , well they can volunteer first , if theyre too old then they can send their kids and grandkids instead.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

If Japan did start a war over these islands, then I that doubt that the USA would support Japan.

The USA is only obliged to defend Japan. (Not support Japanese aggression).

Maruyama was expelled from the Japan Innovation Party in May and joined the NHK Kara Kokumin Wo Mamoru To (the party to protect the people from NHK) in July.

This is most interesting part of this article. He's a member of a party called "NHK Kara Kokumin wo Mamoru." That's golden.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@wtfjapan

America wouldn't step in and help if Japan instigated it.

Then all the more reason for Japan to remilitarise. Even as little as 2 percents of its GDP spent on the military anually will already suffice for Japan to surpass the Russian's.

Let us say that PM Abe will succeed next year in ammending the increasingly less relevant Japan's constitution and green light the mass productions of offensive weaponries over the next 10-20 years, I doubt that you'll still regard Japan as not a match of the Russians by then, let alone the South Koreans.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

showchinmonoToday  12:25 pm JST

Have you ever imagined what it would be like if Japan and the people became really serious to retaliate ?

Don't have to imagine. We all know how WW2 turned out.

Doesn't matter how much they spend or how cutting edge the weapons are if leadership is anything like what Japan's got at the moment. Abe and his cabal of rich grandads have had six years in charge and hasn't succeeded at anything important whatsoever. Can you imagine what a mess they would make of a war?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

You know... Japan doesn't need weapons nor need scrapping art9 but simple fair reason to retaliate through financial squeezing to kill this ever-whining country who likes provoking.

Sharing military classified info with the one who does military drills treating you as a potential enemy?

Hell, you need no reasoning to explain why they are not trustworthy. Just look at what they are doing.

Am I right?

@wtfjapan

America wouldn't step in and help if Japan instigated it.

Moon seems in love so much as to potentially giving up SK under the regime of his beloved master Kim.

Yes it is up to US or depends on who would be running US presidency that time, but whether it likes it or not, US would need to draw Acheson Line once again, where, such SKs performance over the 2 rocks would be wiped out in a few seconds for sure.

Think twice why Samsung met Japanese mega banks first of all when he came over here the other day.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

I keep saying China is not Japan’s enemy. South Korea is because they’re butt hurt over the past.

Japan fighting to regain the islands is a form of self -defense because they are defending what Japan perceives to be its own territories and islands; therefore, consistent with its Constitutional Articles. That Japan choosing not to go to war over these islands is not conceding but exercising restraint.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I wish I could not post it, but this is not some isolated guy, Ishihara was the same. There are quite a few of these types out there. I think they want to wear the shoulder boards and call the shots for all of Asia, just like China does. Ive tried to process it, I think its an Asian thing, long history etc.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Why are these opinions allowed to be broadcast in Japan?

Surely, sprouting such warlike nonsense goes against Japanese school teachings that promote peace and not war!

What is Japan’s official position?

It seems that people of power here see war as a viable alternative to dialogue ...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

"Do you think there is any alternative to war (to regain control of the islands)?"

He later retracted and apologized for his remarks......

Well, that's a typical example of Japanese politicians backtracking on apologies. He’ll repeat this action for another 52 times and the Japanese posters here would say he’s said enough apologies. Seriously Japan, an apology is not lip service, and is definitely not what you say when you get caught for your crime.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

A lawmaker who sparked criticism earlier this year for his remarks suggesting the need for Japan to wage war

He asked a question about each issue; essentially the same question. How is a question a remark suggesting a need to do anything? Well that would require additional context, and I don't see any required context quotes here whatsoever. So I am going to assume its just a question.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Maruyama is being stupid by stating a full-scale war soon between SK and Japan is the best option to recover this Japanese Territory. Japan would win convincingly with the strength of her Navy, but there would be casualties on both side.

The neighboring countries have every reason to whine about Japanese attempt to revise history. Look at the damn country. It produces supremacists who never learnt from the past, and don't even know the dangers of wars. Coupled with people believing in fake propaganda such as the strength of its navy, you are bound to have a group of people convinced that they can start and win a war. And, this is just one person who spoke out. Imagine all the other people who think the same as Maruyama but are currently silent on the matter.

You should go back and learn the correct history, not some distorted Japanese right wing fiction. ROK was even’t formed when Japan surrendered Liancourt Rocks as part of its surrender agreement with the US under SCAPIN 677. Also, Japan lost the war to the allies so Russia owns the Kurils, just as Japan would have owned Korea had Japan won the war. Don't be a hypocrite.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

If I am not allowed to declare the island issues of Japan as mere fluff used by politicians to distract the public could you please put that in the terms of service on the bottom of JT pages? This guessing game gets old. Please. I am seriously requesting this. I do not understand JT policies on such things. Draw me a clear line so I can stop crossing it.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

He is absolutely right.

Even for thousands or hundred-thousand years, as long as Korea exists, Takeshima will never be returned to Japan. No matter how many pages, fax messages, email attachments of protests Japan send to the UN or UU (United Universe) or UM (United Multiverse) if there is any, even to the Heaven or Hell where God, and Devil resides, Takeshima will never be taken or given back.

In the late 50's and 60's, innocent peaceful-loving Japanese fishermen were murdered by KOREAN guards of that islands and they will do the same without hesitations for their heart is full of hatred towards Japan. Japan should start doing the same.

Activate all the decomissioned submarines and add them to the 20+ SORYU-class submarines, build 10 more Aegis destroyers and increase missiles up to 1000-km range.

I think, it is better for Japan to adopt the motto "PEACE thru MILITARY STRENGTH".

No. It is you who should go back and learn. SCAPIN 677 and 1033 both null and void when 1952 treaty concluded.

Despite the disagreement by the US, SK drew Syngman Rhee Line a few months before 1952 Treaty concluded. Since then, SK did not pose even a bit to hesitate shooting at all whatever Japanese ships, Coast guards, ordinary fishing boats. SK captured total 328 fishing boats, detained total 3929 Japanese mariners, killed total 44 Japanese crews up to 1965 treaty. This is nothing but illegal act of stealing the islands by force.

Also, Russia not only didn’t renew the pact but also scrapped and ignored the very maturity of on-going term of the pact and cowardly backstabbed Japan after confirming them already half-dead with Hiroshima evaporating in a flash, again ignoring the agreed spirit of non-territorial expansion among allies.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The country who does military training for potential war to protect these 2 rocks, yes, which started even before it threw away GOSMIA , against the ally of its ally as a potential enemy ( just like the former president who actually begged it's master to make it real potential enemy, like this president who used to be his right-arm man), who doesn't hesitate at all to radar-lock the mere patrol plane to hide its secret mission, is no better than this Hodaka Maruyama at all.

And from another perspective, England and its people seemed pretty racially charged when I went to visit.

There was a lot of tension and discussion about it, brexit and all that.

Are you that Britain is the way you think it is? I know you are certain about Japan!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's a valid enough theory to explore. I'd put my money on there already being a contigency plan, and both the SDF and the PSIA/CIRO having run simulators to consider their chances and effects.

The thing to do would be take it, hold it, then turn it into a neutral zone, however, Japan would do nothing first that would disadvantage its position were SK to finally accept the matter was resolved legally at the ICJ.

It would be a good training exercise.

"Coupled with people believing in fake propaganda such as the strength of its navy,"

Are you for real?!

"JAPAN’S AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AND THE BALANCE OF NAVAL CAPABILITIES IN ASIA"

"the Japanese Navy is already formidable. Japan has 18 attack submarines and plans to buy more, as well as more than 40 major surface combatants comprising modern destroyers and frigates (see Table 1 for comparison).

To put this number in context, both Britain and France have half as many of each,"

https://blog.politics.ox.ac.uk/japans-aircraft-carriers-and-the-balance-of-naval-capabilities-in-asia/

The US relied on Japan's submarines to keep the USSR in check in the Pacific.

Do you think the good old US of A would delegate such a task to a "pretend navy"?

If it came to a naval, or even an aerial war Japan would simply trounce South Korea, just like they've done many times in the past.

Even the Chinese navy is still not able to take on the Japanese, in spite of all the propaganda on the contrary; geography is decidedly against China in any naval contest against Japan.

Isn't war the only way to get them back?"

Maruyama is just being blunt and honest. That's what it will take if Japan really, really wants the islands back.

The Japanese people and the Diet don't want to admit it. Japan can continue with diplomacy and dialog for a hundred more years and Russia will never return the islands.

But Article 9 first paragraph prohibits resorting to military action in settling disputes. Perhaps Maruyama forgot that point when he made his controversial remarks. Nevertheless, its becoming more apparent that Japan is going to have to have those restrictions removed if Japan is going to play a more active military role in keeping the Pacific region stable as the U.S. withdraws. And if China claims the Senkaku Islands and seizes them. What will Japan do, given the Article 9 restrictions? Absolutely nothing except file a ineffectual protest with the UN, who will do nothing.

Because Japan is not China. In Japan, as in the US as we all know, a politician can tweet anything they want, stupid or otherwise.

Samsung pursues import substitution amid Japan trade dispute

On Tuesday, Yonhap's Samsung source said new inputs other than Japanese products are being introduced to manufacturing processes.

Complete substitution of Japanese chemicals is not likely to take place immediately. According to the report, domestic manufacturers could take three to six months to place hydrogen fluoride into mass production.

Hydrogen fluoride is a key chemical in the etching of circuits during semiconductor manufacturing processes.
