Four lawmakers vying for leadership of Japan’s main opposition party have promised to protect Japan’s control of islands at the center of a territorial furor with China.

Who cares.

Former defense chief Shigeru Ishiba says that “losing a piece of the territory eventually means losing the whole country.”

What rubbish.

Former defense chief Shigeru Ishiba says that “losing a piece of the territory eventually means losing the whole country.”.........................................., That is probably how the Americans feel about ,say, Hawaiian Islands -- or the British about the Falklands.

With what? Their walking sticks and zimmer frames?

I'd suggest that a country with a prime minister who denies war crimes committed by his country and worships at a place that enshrines war criminals should also "not enjoy membership in the international society". I wonder if Abe would agree?

LET'S BE REALISTIC - jAPAN IS DEEPER IN DEBT THAN THE USA - HOW ARE YOU GOING TO SWING THIS LITTLE DEAL?

Tom, the troops have to get to the island first. Think the SDF will sink the escorts and transports with harpoon missiles.

Marion, why should Red China take our islands? You do understand we do not want to be part of China?

Both countries have gotten them selves involved in a highly unnecessary game of brinkmanship. So, yes semperfi, it is very much about who blinks first. And somehow I doubt that China can allow it self to blink at this point in time. So most likely it will be Japan that walks away with their tail between their legs.

(Not saying this is right, just the way I see it playing out)
