If you want to learn about Japanese constitution, it is in English and Japanese. If Abe's people's request is approved in Japanese Congress, National election will be performed. If 50%+1 voted yes, the constitution will be changed.

Probably they want to make weapon sales is not unconstitutional.

The danger of a standing army, as the American Founding Fathers understood from their study of history and rightly feared ,, was considered an ever-present threat to liberty, and as Adams counseled "must be watched with a jealous eye". Unfortunately, judging from the historical record, there has always been a worrying lack of "jealous eyes" in Japan. It requires little percipience to suspect that the spider and the fly relationship reflected in the lying eyes of the ruling elite and the bleary eyes of the hard-pressed majority of Japanese salarymen does not augur well for a democratic future secure from the threat of a military coup d'etat. If Abe succeeds in ramming through his dream of constitutional changes past a somnambulating public, the citizens of Japan should be afraid, very afraid.

This is Abe and LDP plan to revise constitution. Probably they are hoping to touch Article 9. To make Japan economically poor is not done by constitution change. They will try but Japanese voters are not eager to follow Abe right now.

Instead of Japan getting rid of Article 9, they should be advocating for it across the world for it to be adopted. The US, for example, should definitely implement it. How many countries invaded and people have they killed?

Oh brother talk about complete ignorance about the law.
To make amendments to the constitution you NEED to take it through a national referendum with a majority vote to ratify.
It's written within again in the constitution and no government is going to change that.
Abe already made clear stating that he will keep maintain paragraph one unchanged and either alter paragraph two OR submit a new paragraph, paragraph three to officially recognize the Japan Self Defense Force a military arm of Japan.

gogogo: "Fix the economy first!"
Baby pandas do a better job than Abe at fixing the economy. Abe's trying to destroy it.

"A majority of the Japanese people must also approve any proposed amendment to the constitution in a referendum."
Hahaha... yeah, right. They'll ram it through and say, when it's clear the majority are against him yet again, that he'll "seek to make the public understand" later. Abe has no idea what "debate" means, since he "expects legislation to go through in the current session", and talk about it to occur some time later. Abe seems to have mistaken "debate" with "compliance".

Fix the economy first!

Referenda are very important. We see visually that the constitution needs change because we need more effective tools to develop. Japan is a highly developed country so these changes are probably necessar

One thing it is clear - CCP is an increasingly aggressive and hostile neighbor.

How about the economy, the aging society, the government debt and and and... And Mr Abe has nothing else in mind than changing the constitution...

The peace constitution provided 70 years safety to Japanese people. Can Abe promise that his revision will provide another 70 years peace?

Abe is in a rush to force through constitutional changes that will allow him to remilitarise and start threatening other countries. I can only hope the people will vote "no" to the changes, but given the lack of media freedom and government threats we can only expect the biased, pro-government view to be given an airing.

Coonnstituution canbbe changed if amajjority of voters vote to change. Abe and LDP just suggested before. and they gave up right away.

Japanese never fought a war with foreign countries except a few times through its 2000 years history and everyone knows how it ended the last time. Japanese samurais had fought only with samurais like themselves who has spoken the same language with the same shared culture. Not that I'm against Abe and LDP, but I can't say if it is in their genes to handle global wars...
Disillusioned
Hey! Hang on! Didn't he change the laws so a public referendum was unnecessary to change the constitution? In the latest poll over 60% of the public were against the change. I wonder if that 60% will get off their butts and actually vote against it.
thepersoniamnow
I do think Japan needs to change its constitution to match the times, and the reality of the times that we live in.

It's obvious that the LDP makes a huge deal out of not having SDF-forces clearly specified in the article 9 of the constitution. It is not like every freaking country has specified their defense-forces in their constitutions! It's globally widely recognized that Japan are allowed to have their own defense, respectfully the SDF-forces. Literally every army in the world functions as a self-defense force, even though not necesarrily mentioned in their specific constitutions:) Japan is the only country since the end of WWll not having engaged in military conflicts. All thanks to a pacifistic and peace idealistic constitution. Despite being presented by a foreign power, it resembles nothing but love and compassion! Not much of a humiliation if you ask me! To loosen the restrictions on the SDF-role as a sole self-defense force into a more aggressive force, bears no reflection and consideration of past grievance!:(

I don't think he has plans to. get rid of US Forces. We have to e careful what portions of constitution is planned to . be channnnnnnnnged
toshiko
He has been so eager to change constitution to make Japan able to behave like USA. He knows current constitution allows defending from N Korea.

The propaganda onslaught to terrify the populace into agreement is only going to increase, unfortunately.

So he is telling us that this will happen and he will explain at a later date. This man baby is out of control.
