The second paragraph of Article 9 should have been removed or amended ages ago. The JSDF has existed since 1950 and is considered the 6th most powerful military in the world, yet in Article 9 it is prohibited from even existing. This contradiction needs to be removed, even to just eliminate the constant "constitutional" arguments that are raised prior to each and every JSDF deployment.
The first paragraph needs to be amended so that while starting wars of invasion should be retricted, all other forms to protect and defend Japan should be eased. The "Peace Constution" is wonderful and if every country in the world had it, we would akll be living in peace. Unfortunately that's not the case, and Japan alone having such self restrictions only ends up being used to their adversaries' advantage.
Amending Article 9 has been to date predominantly a domestic issue within Japan. But the region is now moving towards collectice defense through the formation of QUAD and alliance with NATO. In order for Japan to properly function within such frameworks, as well as the increased interpreability with the US, amending the now outdated and unrealistic Article 9 is a must.

This is the same self-important imbecile who humiliated a foreign reporter when she asked about Japan's handling of residents trapped outside the country during corona.
I don't want him anywhere near the levers of power. We've seen what he thinks of the 'little people'.
Cricky
Think they might have a myopic focus on Article 9, I don’t trust what the LDP would do given the opportunity of aligning Nippon Kaigies agenda within the legal framework of the country. There are many problems with the constitution that affect day to day lives in many ways. Defence isn’t one of them, Japan can defend itself and has many partners who would help. But two people in love can’t marry? A better clarification of the separation of the legal system and government. Better legal rights for women and children. There are many reasons to make changes, ability to start a war is not one of them.

Maybe they need to worry more about changing/creating/enforcing laws that actually help average citizens, first.
Wages, overtime, workplace harrassment, sexual assault, gender equality, marriage equality, fair taxation, education, bullying, immigration, racism, etc.
They can work on the Constitution after they get all that stuff out of the way.

With that kind of Bushido attitude I trust that when the time comes you'll be on the front lines, right in the middle of all the action.

That does not mean a declaration BY the public. The lawful rulers instituted a new constitution and then made a public declaration (they declared to the public).
Hideomi Kuze
LDP who hates fundamental human rights or freedom of expression or press freedom or sovereignty of the people tries to destroy present constitution.
but, Article 9 is largest historical lesson in Japan history when the war that killed over millions general citizen.
Shameless LDP disrespects it.

So is the LDP.

Promulgation only refers to the legal process of making something law. Please look it up before barking.
Fighto!
Good news.
Japan should have the right to defend herself - like every nation on earth - as well as defend her allies on foreign land and wage war if necessary.
Times have changed in 80 years : this is the most dangerous time in Japan since 1945.
Japan cannot and will not sit on her hands if Taiwan becomes the next Ukraine.

The dozy old coots in the influential right-wing organisations that support the LDP don't care about any of that stuff. After all the serfs seem to keep re-electing the LDP no matter how bad their conditions get.

Article 9 is a relic of the past. The world today is much different from the time when the wounds of the Pacific War had not healed.
But even minor amendments to Article 9 would face significant opposition in Japan. Not to mention the dovish Komeito, which will always be against Japan rearming herself because the Soka Gakkai founders who opposed the Pacific War were imprisoned by Japan’s authorities during the war.

What is this blokes agenda??? He stating changes to the constitution but what changes. I bet the same sex marriage for the SAP community is not one of the changes he is aiming for. Where the first challenge change should be the legal right to marriage for same sex couples.
Cricky
Hello Kitty, you are absolutely right all this article 9 talk is a smoke screen to change or revert to a 1930s based constitution.
Nemo
They could start by explicitly recognizing same sex marriage.... (What am I saying? Of course they won't)

Love Article 9. Here are America's wars you lucky Japanese have avoided fighting in. The Korean War. The Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos wars, The Iraq wars. People in Japan have lived out their without war. Talk to people who grew up within living memory of war.
The scoundrels wishing to pervert Article 9 must be defeated.

No Article 9, I move to China. Now japan is the best place to live in the whole world. But, if we go off fighting unwinnable wars for a certain country, or Edo era politicians, no point living here.

Promulgation = by public declaration !
Article 9 and the entire Japanese constitution was not chosen by the public.
Hello Kitty 321
People keep banging on about Article 9 but that is only the LDP's excuse for changing the Constitution. If you read their drafts for the new Constitution you will see that whereas the current one states that, 'sovereign power resides with the people,' the new one says 'sovereign power resides with the government.' It is simply an attempt to gain dictatorial power.
Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne
Your absolutely correct kitty.
The imperial system never actually disappeared as you can see for yourself on all official documents.
My question is whether Japan will still provide hosting after they amended the constitution ?
Many believe the USA military is still an occupation thats paid for.
What might happen ?
Another grandiose Japanese agreement flip-flop ?

General election of Japan 1955, many Japanese who underwent the war chose to continue pacifism constitution.
Destroying pacifism constitution is just self-satisfaction of right-wing ruling party LDP who adore prewar fascism regime ”Great Japan Empire”.
They who repeat many falsehood and deception only to maintain their regime cannot rebuild or defend country.
Number of Covid19 deaths at Japan is worst in far-east Asia.
what they did in Japan past 10 years is only destruction of democracy.
shogun36
haha, that’s rich.
way to keep laws relevant and up to date. Keep up the good work guys…………..hey, I heard there was this new thing coming out. It’s called a, “television set?!?!” Sounds like it’s supposed to be the next big thing!

EXACTLY!
Agree with you 100%
Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne
That's BS !
The Japanese constitution was put in place by foreign powers because Japan surrendered it's country , surrendered it's military and surrendered the assumed godliness status of the imperial royal family.
The constitution wasn't originally elected by the public by promulgation.
Septim Dynasty
The change in Article 9 is exactly what the American MIC wants. They once contemplated bringing back Imperial Japan's military but under absolute CIA control right after 1946. Kodama and other Sugamo prisoners were put in charge to resurrect the CIA-controlled fascist armies in Japan but they couldn't do complex politics at the time.
Nevertheless, the change in Article 9 will aim toward forcing Japan to defend Taiwan. This will surely incur the wrath of China without a doubt, and the Japanese economy will be destroyed.

Another thing the US banned during the occupation was the cultivation and use of cannabis. If they really want to bleat about sovereignty and self defense, how about squaring THAT circle as well? After all, cannabis and other drugs were cultivated as part of the war effort which is why the US banned it. But I don't see the LDP going that route
brilliant Simon!
