Calling the Democrats “liars and fraudsters,”

he wouldnt see much different if he looked around his own party room

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Instead of talking about party line issues, both parties need to unite to accomplish the objectives.

Both parties need to work together for the best interests of Japan and Japanese people.

Japan has been changing leaders every 6 months like a disposal diaper in the past 20 years. You need to do everything to avoid a political vacuum. The world community is not willing to listen to your BS anymore. We will be moving forward without Japan that is a dying Sun.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I don't think it will happen. I used to be a long LDP supporter but the LDP today is not the LDP in the past. Many good politicians of the party are either retired or left from the party during the course of their decline and many LDP politicians today are the sons or grandsons of the former LDP politicians. It is too early to return the old regime.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The thing I worry about is that some people, given the chance, will vote for the LDP thinking that a change will be better than what they have now. But it won't! They don't have the leaders needed to do anything! All they believe in is helping their corporate friends, and enriching themselves. They are not a party for the people, but much like the Republicans in the US, for the rich and the multinational corporations!

7 ( +7 / -1 )

While the LDP is a necessary part of the checks and balances that help prevent corruption in general, their words seem like the bluster of a relic of the post war transition at this point. The LDP took payments from the US through the CIA, but I suppose this is not the case for the DPJ who will be better able to look after the interests of its people and cooperate with the US in a way that is more meaningful.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The LDP has been THE obstacle for for getting legislations passed that would have helped benefit the people of this country.

A DPJ member could be trying to hail a cab and the LDP would demand that the Lower House be dismantled and call for snap elections.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Both parties need to work together for the best interests of Japan and Japanese people.

Some LDP members have been saying at media and their blog, "It's not a good idea to dissolve the lower house and hold a general election now. We need to join the talks or we could not win the public's understanding." Those LDP members who are skeptical about Tanigaki are: Shigeru Ishiba, Mori Yoshiro, Kono Taro, Koizumi Shinjiro, Hirasawa Katsuei...

Tanigaki's term as LDP president will end in September. Things might change after Tanigaki steps down.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

In reality both of the parties are pretty much the same, seeing as how many if not most of the DJP types were originally LDP members anyway.

Japanese politics and politicians are nuckin futz anyway and anyone that really listens to these blow hard's have got to end up thinking that all of them just like hearing their own voices anyway.

Personally speaking here it's a waste of taxpayers money to run a national election now, and for once I would love to see the population here stand up and say SOMETHING to stop these idiots from making things worse than they already are!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I doubt that the people have such a short memory to forget that the LDP let the people down when this party's cooperation was needed . Not a year has passed since the Tohoku earthquake.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

While the LDP is a necessary part of the checks and balances that help prevent corruption in general

Good to see someone is sharp enough this early in the morning to have a sense of humour...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I prefer the DPJ for now, they suck less compared to the LDP.

Hashimoto, the current Osaka Mayor, is the only one who could change Japan in my opinion.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Why has the DPJ been making slow progress? Because the LDP blocks attempts to progress.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The last paragraph sums the LDP up. Tanigaki has said nothing about the sales tax and TPP because the LDP will do exactly the same as the DPJ, if they retake power.

Not even a year after Higashi-Nijon Dai-shin and these guys are already starting the bad mouthing and back-stabbing!! Really, do any of these politicians have any good intentions for the Japanese people, or is lining their pockest the real agenda? Japan Clowns Inc. ..... they are back.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Rather that focusing on improving Japan they are solely focused on removing the current government, how about actually giving the people something so they want to vote for you?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Not even a year after Higashi-Nijon Dai-shin and these guys are already starting the bad mouthing and back-stabbing!!

Can I ask where you have been? The back stabbing and bad mouthing has been going on prior to March 11th and continued on through without a break afterwards as well.

These politicians here do not care about the country nor it's people.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Tanigaki's term as LDP president will end in September. Things might change after Tanigaki steps down.

Glad to hear that, Blair. He needs to go out sooner.

In reality both of the parties are pretty much the same, seeing as how many if not most of the DJP types were originally LDP members anyway

What Japan needs today is a forward thinker with a problem solving skill.

Why has the DPJ been making slow progress? Because the LDP blocks attempts to progress.

LDP is a party of "NO" Japanese version. Their interest is not for your best interest. They are only interested in coming back to control Japan the way they used to do in the past over 5 decades. They stole your future, dream and hope.

Japan needs a new generation of reform minded , forward thinking energetic politicians

Forward thinker and global thinker.

Japan Clowns Inc. ..... they are back

Only if you allow them. You need to get your country back to your own hands to fight back.

Well, again, you need to do everything to avoid a 'POLITICAL VACUUM" in Japan. If you do, you will be stuck, and the rest of world will be moving forward without you guys.

@globalwatcher

Japan has been changing leaders every 6 months like a disposal diaper in the past 20 years

Can you name a single prime minister who only lasted six months in the past 20 years?

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

However, Tanigaki made no mention of his partys stance on the consumption tax, social security reform and the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks, leading some critics to say that he is too focused on internal party politics.

That says it all.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

OMG! The LDP have been holding up/back ANYTHING since 3/11, the ldp clarly have no shame what so ever, these SOBs need to be taken deep sixed, clearly they dont give a damn about their own country, the obstructions they have been running since 3/11 are way way beyond the pale.

tanigaki, do yr country a favour & just DISAPPEAR!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Japan has been changing leaders every 6 months like a disposal diaper in the past 20 years.

WRONG...Almost every year since Koizumi left.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Someone should put Tanigaki in diapers!!

"We wanna a snap election! We wanna snap election!!"

He's become like a spoiled brat!!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is one of the reasons why Osakans voted Osaka Ishin-no-Kai voted over the principal parties!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Can you name a single prime minister who only lasted six months in the past 20 years?

De?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tanigaki called the government “bogus”

Um, Mr.Tanligaki is probably so old he does not realise Japan has now become a democracy. Thus the DPJ coalition is governing legitimately, not in a "bogus" manner. I agree they are hopelessly out of their depth however. For Japanese, the LDP is the "natural" party of government here, and will be returned whenever an election is called, without any question.

Can you name a single prime minister who only lasted six months in the past 20 years?

Lasting 6 months is nothing to be proud of! Even a year or two is ridiculous. The revolving door of Prime Ministers and Cabinet here is pathetic, and leads to instability and very poor governing. Even the Americans have come out and told Japan this in the past week or so.

There is one. I do not know his name right after Koizumi.. He resigned for a personal health issue. Many others lasted less than a year.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Is there anyone who can list ALL PMs in Japan since twenty years ago? Let's just put every PMs on Merry-go-Around, see who can answer this question.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

"However, Tanigaki made no mention of his party’s stance on the consumption tax..."

Exactly! When this guy, sadly, takes office later this year he'll suggest raising the consumption tax and say it's not his fault. Tanigaki is one of the worst politicians this nation has seen, and that means absolutely horrible given that we are talking about Japanese politicians.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Can you name a single prime minister who only lasted six months in the past 20 years?

Tsutomu Hata: the 80th Prime Minister of Japan for 64 days (4/28/1994-6/30/1994)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsutomu_Hata

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Tsutomu Hata- 9 weeks...... anyway not the point..... the point is How many PM served a full 4 year term in the last 30 years? A: 2.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tsutomu Hata (羽田 孜 Hata Tsutomu?, born August 24, 1935) is a Japanese politician and was the 80th Prime Minister of Japan for 9 weeks in 1994.

Wow, Blair. There is another one who took over Koizumi. I cannot come up with his name.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@ Globalwatcher

Yukio Hatoyama.... but he made it to 8 months.

I wonder what benefits ex-prime-ministers get........?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is one. I do not know his name right after Koizumi.. He resigned for a personal health issue. Many others lasted less than a year.

That would be Abe. And he was PM for just over a year.

marcelito,

six months or ten it doesn,t matter..

But it does matter. Factual accuracy in statements matters. We're having a discussion about this and when someone says something grossly inaccurate it does matter.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Many good politicians of the party are either retired or left from the party during the course of their decline

Good politicians. Now there's an oxymoron.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why should they bother? The DPJ in power is implementing all of the LDP's policies for it.

"Calling the Democrats “liars and fraudsters,” the LDP chief said..."

And right he is. The DPJ parliamentarians are liars and fraudsters. The LDP offers quite a glaring contrast, being composed of fraudsters and liars.

You want real change. Allow us gaijins to put together a political party, and we will aim to reform EVERYTHING to bring J politics, healthcare, education and Law into the 21st century... Oh what a thought :)

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

If the citizens of countries don't take ownership of their own governance, and rather just trust the government is acting in their best interest, shameful situations like the present political climate results.

The best interests of the country and it's people have long been forgotten in favor of cross-party bickering, corruption and slander. This is sadly the case in many countries, not only Japan.

Time to step up and demand better.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

only if they bring back the Koizumi! and give the Emperor limited political power in the ability to break deadlocks and tied votes.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Tanigaki called the government “bogus” and said the country needs the LDP back in power, NTV reported.

Tanigaki is right about this. The LDP is the legitimate ruling party of Japan. It was set up that way after the war. The DPJ won the last election by lying to the public. That show their fraud.

You want real change. Allow us gaijins to put together a political party, and we will aim to reform EVERYTHING

Given what "gaijins" (your word) have done to Europe, I think it's pretty clear the results of that would be disastrous.

-4 ( +3 / -6 )

Japan is in its current mess mainly due to the LDP. All one has to do is go somewhere rural in Japan and see a massive amount of concrete and beautiful roads with no cars on them to realize this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You want real change. Allow us gaijins to put together a political party, and we will aim to reform EVERYTHING to bring J politics, healthcare, education and Law into the 21st century... Oh what a thought :)

I go for that tokyokawasaki. But do we have to change our citizenships to Japanese first? We can really make a real change for Japan, for sure.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

the LDP since becoming the opposition have been totally destructive in their opinions never constructive. All tanigaki ever does is reinforce this. But the DPJ seem more interested in fighting amomg themselves than anything else so its akiller choice on which group is worse!!!but at least they arent born again religious nuts like in the republican race

0 ( +0 / -0 )

UK: I'll have a go off the top of my head (correct me if I'm wrong) David Cameron (3 years) Gordon Brown (4 years) Tony Blair (8 years) John Major (4 years) Margaret Thatcher (12 years)

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Tanigaki called the government “bogus” This man is an idiot.

Calling the Democrats “liars and fraudsters,” This man has never looked in the mirror. He is disgusting.

j6p4nFTW: "But it does matter. Factual accuracy in statements matters. We're having a discussion about this and when someone says something grossly inaccurate it does matter."

Your question was answered already -- Hata lasted some 9 weeks, total -- but you choose to ignore it and claim factual accuracy matters. A bit hypocritical, no? And anyway, the LDP is as useless as the DPJ, if not moreso, and in particular Tanigaki is a tool.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

j4p4nFTW: "Given what "gaijins" (your word) have done to Europe, I think it's pretty clear the results of that would be disastrous."

The difference is that when Japan falls, and it will within a decade, it will not recover for a long, long time, but Europe will. And there are plenty of nations besides those in Europe.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Watching Tanigaki give his speech at the party's regular convention raised the ire in me. At one point he said something like the LDP led the way in the reconstruction of Japan following WWII. He forgot who actually led the way. It was people like Mr. Soichiro Honda of the Honda motor company, Mr. Akio Toyota of the Toyota Motor Company, Mr. Yoshida of Dentsu and the leaders of Sony, Toshiba and other companies that pulled Japan out of the ditch and put it on the road to fame and fortune. While all this was happening, the LDP guys were busy siphoning off our money and whatever they could from the companies for their personal use. One example that made headlines was the late Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka who got involved in the Lockheed fiasco.

If the LDP wants to come back into power, they should get rid of the clowns they now have and put in some people who are really serious about running the country properly. The same holds true for the New Komeito Party.

Meanwhile Minshuto has to wade through all kinds of LDP and Komeito barricades to get help to the people of Japan, especially those in the hard-hit tsunami areas, and get the country rolling forward again.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

smithinjapan,

Oh, I think there has been a regrettable misunderstanding. Here was a claim that many Japanese PM's had served less than 6 months in the past 20 years. So I asked for names of any PMs had served less than 6 months in the past 20 years. Of course I know answer is one, Mr Hata. Very carefully I never said I thought it was zero, or one, or ten. I kept the answer silent and just asked the claimer. But then someone said it doesn't matter 6 months or 10 months. But it does matter.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

gaijins to put together a political party

do we have to change our citizenships to Japanese first?

(Correct me if I was wrong.) Under current law, foreigners have to be naturalized to be Japanese citizens in order to be eligibility to run for public office. There are some foreign born politicians (naturalized Japanese), such as Tsurunen Marutei from Finland, Anthony Bianchi from Brooklyn NY, USA.

There are quite a few former zainichi Koreans who are now politicians in Japan.

I can't stand Tanigaki, I doubt the LDP will regain the majority the Lower House as long as he's the chief. He says the DPJ is out of touch with reality because they want to raise the consumption tax without seeking a public mandate. I'll bet he would seek a public mandate, and when he doesn't get it, he would still propose to raise the tax.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

j4p4nFTW, "someone said it doesn't matter 6 months or 10 months. But it does matter"

It matters only to those wishing to score technical points. The political point is valid. Fourteen PMs in twenty years indicates a massive failing in the countries leadership.

LDP = GOP

@tokyokawasaki & globalwatcher

You want real change. Allow us gaijins to put together a political party, and we will aim to reform EVERYTHING to bring J politics, healthcare, education and Law into the 21st century...

We can really make a real change for Japan, for sure.

How can you reform EVERYTHING and make a real change for Japan for sure, "educational issues", for example?

entrance examination hell for HS/College center exam for public universities bullying suicidal teachers 登校拒否(tokokyohi) 学級崩壊(gakkyuhokai) monster parents English education with/out ALTs refusal of J-shine teachers refusal of ALTs school merge in country side low level of literacy test school bus system full time foreign teacher unable to be Kyoyu in public schools (I can go on and on...)
